Summary
HPLC is the most convenient method for the assay of the azithromycin (10-dihydro-10-deoxo-11-methyl-11-azaerythromycin A), a semisynthetic macrolide antibiotic and its reaction intermediates. Data concerning the effects of pH, temperature and column type are presented. The analytical procedures enabling the reliable assay of azithromycin and its intermediates, as well as other impurities are defined. Use of a reversed-phase octadecyl column, a pH of 9.3–9.5, and isocratic mode at ambient temperature are the best conditions of analysis.
