Summary
A study was made of the oxime-HNO2 reaction, which in the determination of the amino nitrogen yields at least 1 mol gas without a primary amino group being present. The Chromatographic analysis gave predominantly N2O along with a little N2. The succession of reactions, which lead to N2O-formation, was elucidated. According to this, the action of HNO2 on an oxime gives a nitrimine, which is unstable in water solution and is hydrolyzed to carbonyl compound and nitramide. Under the conditions of the amino nitrogen determination, the nitramide is likewise unstable and decomposes at once into N2O. It was also shown that the succession of reactions which leads to N2 and whose intermediate products are as yet unexplained, presents a competing reaction to that giving N2O.
When determining the temperature-dependence of the oxime-HNO2 reaction, it was found that in addition to the main reaction just discussed, which occurs at 20° C, side reactions occur at higher temperatures, which yield fractions of a mol of gas (N2 + N2O). Reaction paths that appear reasonable for these side reactions could also be developed.
