Description: | Research Report Summary: The theory of a plate on an elastic foundation will closely predict the radial cracks observed in loading tests on floating ice sheets. However, the plate theory does not predict accurately the circumferential crack which forms ultimately with increased loading. The wedge theory is developed in an attempt to better predict the location and magnitude of the stresses causing the circumferential crack. The results obtained can be applied to help predict the ultimate bearing capacity of an ice sheet, provided the modulus of elasticity and flexural strength of the ice are known. |
