Highlights

figure data

January 2024

  • In January 2024, dry natural gas production increased year over year for the month for the 33rd consecutive month. Preliminary dry natural gas production in January 2024 was 3,202 billion cubic feet (Bcf), or 103.3 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d). Production was 1.4% (1.4 Bcf/d) higher in January 2024 than in January 2023 (101.9 Bcf/d) and the highest for the month since 1973, when we began tracking dry natural gas production. Gross withdrawals also increased from January 2023:
    • Gross withdrawals: 3,862 Bcf for the month, or 124.6 Bcf/d
      • A 1.1% increase compared with January 2023 (123.2 Bcf/d)
    • • Highest daily rate of gross withdrawals for the month since 1980, the earliest year in this data set
  • Estimated natural gas consumption in January 2024 was 3,696 Bcf, or 119.2 Bcf/d
    • An 11.8% increase compared with January 2023 (106.6 Bcf/d)
    • Highest daily rate of natural gas consumption for any month since we began using the current methodology for consumption in 2001
  • The year-over-year average daily rate of dry natural gas consumption in January 2024 increased in all four consuming sectors. Natural gas deliveries by consuming sector in January 2024 were:
    • Residential deliveries: 919 Bcf for the month, or 29.6 Bcf/d
      • A 15.0% increase compared with January 2023 (25.8 Bcf/d)
    • Commercial deliveries: 535 Bcf for the month, or 17.3 Bcf/d
      • A 12.6% increase compared with January 2023 (15.3 Bcf/d)
    • Industrial deliveries: 802 Bcf for the month, or 25.9 Bcf/d
      • A 4.0% increase compared with January 2023 (24.9 Bcf/d)
    • • Second-highest industrial deliveries for the month since we began using the current methodology for industrial deliveries in 2001
    • Electric power deliveries: 1,131 Bcf for the month, or 36.5 Bcf/d
    • • A 17.0% increase compared with January 2023 (31.2 Bcf/d)
      • Highest electric power deliveries for the month since we began using the current methodology for electric power deliveries in 2001
  • Net natural gas imports (imports minus exports) were -350 Bcf, or -11.3 Bcf/d, in January 2024, making the United States a net natural gas exporter. Daily net natural gas imports were the lowest for the month since we began tracking them in 1973. The United States exported 2.1 times more natural gas than it imported in January 2024. Liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports in January 2024 were 17.5% higher than the daily rate of LNG exported in January 2023; the daily rate of LNG exports was the highest for the month since we began tracking it in 1997. In January 2024, the United States exported 12.8 Bcf/d of LNG to 31 countries. Both natural gas imports and exports increased year over year in January 2024:
    • Total imports: 323 Bcf for the month, or 10.4 Bcf/d
    • • A 17.5% increase compared with January 2023 (8.9 Bcf/d)
      • Highest natural gas imports for the month since 2011
    • Total exports: 674 Bcf for the month, or 21.7 Bcf/d
    • • A 10.7% increase compared with January 2023 (19.6 Bcf/d)
      • Highest natural gas exports for the month since we began tracking them in 1973
