Germany’s export-driven business model, based on a vertically integrated industrial value chain, has come under pressure. This is happening at the beginning of the value chain where energy-intensive industries are located, but also at the end where the impact of the transformation in the automotive industry towards e-mobility is being felt. It does not come as a surprise that a discussion about “de-industrialisation” in Germany has begun. Weak numbers for domestic industrial production in the manufacturing sector also contribute to the concerns. At the same time, however, industrial gross value added has performed better during the last few years.
