Highlights

figure data

February 2024

  • In February 2024, dry natural gas production increased year over year for the month for the 34th consecutive month. Preliminary dry natural gas production in February 2024 was 3,064 billion cubic feet (Bcf), or 105.7 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d). Production was 3.6% (3.7 Bcf/d) higher in February 2024 than in February 2023 (102.0 Bcf/d) and the highest for the month since 1973, when we began tracking dry natural gas production. Gross withdrawals also increased from February 2023:
    • Gross withdrawals: 3,714 Bcf for the month, or 128.1 Bcf/d
      • A 3.8% increase compared with February 2023 (123.4 Bcf/d)
    • • Highest daily rate of gross withdrawals for the month, and the second highest for any month, since 1980, the earliest year in this data set
  • Estimated natural gas consumption in February 2024 was 2,969 Bcf, or 102.4 Bcf/d
    • A 2.8% decrease compared with February 2023 (105.3 Bcf/d)
    • Lowest daily rate of natural gas consumption for the month since 2018
  • The year-over-year average daily rate of dry natural gas consumption in February 2024 decreased in three of the four consuming sectors. Natural gas deliveries by consuming sector in February 2024 were:
    • Residential deliveries: 646 Bcf for the month, or 22.3 Bcf/d
      • An 8.8% decrease compared with February 2023 (24.4 Bcf/d)
    • • Second-lowest residential deliveries for the month since we began using the current methodology for residential deliveries in 2001
    • Commercial deliveries: 416 Bcf for the month, or 14.3 Bcf/d
      • A 5.3% decrease compared with February 2023 (15.1 Bcf/d)
    • • Lowest daily rate of commercial deliveries for the month since 2017
    • Industrial deliveries: 718 Bcf for the month, or 24.8 Bcf/d
      • A 2.1% decrease compared with February 2023 (25.3 Bcf/d)
    • Electric power deliveries: 914 Bcf for the month, or 31.5 Bcf/d
    • • A 1.4% increase compared with February 2023 (31.1 Bcf/d)
      • Highest electric power deliveries for the month since we began using the current methodology for electric power deliveries in 2001
  • Net natural gas imports (imports minus exports) were -385 Bcf, or -13.3 Bcf/d, in February 2024, making the United States a net natural gas exporter. Daily net natural gas imports were the lowest for the month since we began tracking them in 1973. The United States exported two-and-a-half times more natural gas than it imported in February 2024. Liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports in February 2024 were 6.6% higher than the daily rate of LNG exported in February 2023; the daily rate of LNG exports was the highest for the month since we began tracking it in 1997. In February 2024, the United States exported 12.4 Bcf/d of LNG to 30 countries. Both natural gas imports and exports increased year over year in February 2024:
    • Total imports: 259 Bcf for the month, or 8.9 Bcf/d
    • • A 2.5% increase compared with February 2023 (8.7 Bcf/d)
    • Total exports: 644 Bcf for the month, or 22.2 Bcf/d
    • • An 8.1% increase compared with February 2023 (20.5 Bcf/d)
      • Highest natural gas exports for the month since we began tracking them in 1973
