Lead-halide perovskites have demonstrated astonishing increases in power conversion efficiency in photovoltaics over the last decade. The most efficient perovskite devices now outperform industry-standard multi-crystalline silicon solar cells, despite the fact that perovskites are typically grown at low temperature using simple solution-based methods. However, the toxicity of lead and its ready solubility in water are concerns for widespread implementation. These challenges, alongside the many successes of the perovskites, have motivated significant efforts across multiple disciplines to find lead-free and stable alternatives which could mimic the ability of the perovskites to achieve high performance with low temperature, facile fabrication methods. This Review discusses the computational and experimental approaches that have been taken to discover lead-free perovskite-inspired materials, and the recent successes and challenges in synthesizing these compounds. The atomistic origins of the extraordinary performance exhibited by lead-halide perovskites in photovoltaic devices is discussed, alongside the key challenges in engineering such high-performance in alternative, next-generation materials. Beyond photovoltaics, this Review discusses the impact perovskite-inspired materials have had in spurring efforts to apply new materials in other optoelectronic applications, namely light-emitting diodes, photocatalysts, radiation detectors, thin film transistors and memristors. Finally, the prospects and key challenges faced by the field in advancing the development of perovskite-inspired materials towards realization in commercial devices is discussed.

Recent progress in artificial intelligence is largely attributed to the rapid development of machine learning, especially in the algorithm and neural network models. However, it is the performance of the hardware, in particular the energy efficiency of a computing system that sets the fundamental limit of the capability of machine learning. Data-centric computing requires a revolution in hardware systems, since traditional digital computers based on transistors and the von Neumann architecture were not purposely designed for neuromorphic computing. A hardware platform based on emerging devices and new architecture is the hope for future computing with dramatically improved throughput and energy efficiency. Building such a system, nevertheless, faces a number of challenges, ranging from materials selection, device optimization, circuit fabrication and system integration, to name a few. The aim of this Roadmap is to present a snapshot of emerging hardware technologies that are potentially beneficial for machine learning, providing the Nanotechnology readers with a perspective of challenges and opportunities in this burgeoning field.

There has been a considerable amount of research in the development of sustainable water treatment techniques capable of improving the quality of water. Unavailability of drinkable water is a crucial issue especially in regions where conventional drinking water treatment systems fail to eradicate aquatic pathogens, toxic metal ions and industrial waste. The research and development in this area have given rise to a new class of processes called advanced oxidation processes, particularly in the form of heterogeneous photocatalysis, which converts photon energy into chemical energy. Advances in nanotechnology have improved the ability to develop and specifically tailor the properties of photocatalytic materials used in this area. This paper discusses many of those photocatalytic nanomaterials, both metal-based and metal-free, which have been studied for water and waste water purification and treatment in recent years. It also discusses the design and performance of the recently studied photocatalytic reactors, along with the recent advancements in the visible-light photocatalysis. Additionally, the effects of the fundamental parameters such as temperature, pH, catalyst-loading and reaction time have also been reviewed. Moreover, different techniques that can increase the photocatalytic efficiency as well as recyclability have been systematically presented, followed by a discussion on the photocatalytic treatment of actual wastewater samples and the future challenges associated with it.

Integrating layered two-dimensional (2D) materials into 3D heterostructures offers opportunities for novel material functionalities and applications in electronics and photonics. In order to build the highest quality heterostructures, it is crucial to preserve the cleanliness and morphology of 2D material surfaces that come in contact with polymers such as PDMS during transfer. Here we report that substantial residues and up to ∼0.22% compressive strain can be present in monolayer MoS₂ transferred using PDMS. We show that a UV-ozone pre-cleaning of the PDMS surface before exfoliation significantly reduces organic residues on transferred MoS₂ flakes. An additional 200 ^◦C vacuum anneal after transfer efficiently removes interfacial bubbles and wrinkles as well as accumulated strain, thereby restoring the surface morphology of transferred flakes to their native state. Our recipe is important for building clean heterostructures of 2D materials and increasing the reproducibility and reliability of devices based on them.

Heterostacks formed by combining two-dimensional materials show novel properties which are of great interest for new applications in electronics, photonics and even twistronics, the new emerging field born after the outstanding discoveries on twisted graphene. Here, we report the direct growth of tin nanosheets at the two-dimensional limit via molecular beam epitaxy on chemical vapor deposited graphene on Al₂O₃(0001). The mutual interaction between the tin nanosheets and graphene is evidenced by structural and chemical investigations. On the one hand, Raman spectroscopy indicates that graphene undergoes compressive strain after the tin growth, while no charge transfer is observed. On the other hand, chemical analysis shows that tin nanosheets interaction with sapphire is mediated by graphene avoiding the tin oxidation occurring in the direct growth on this substrate. Remarkably, optical measurements show that the absorption of tin nanosheets exhibits a graphene-like behavior with a strong absorption in the ultraviolet photon energy range, therein resulting in a different optical response compared to tin nanosheets on bare sapphire. The optical properties of ultra-thin tin films therefore represent an open and flexible playground for the absorption of light in a broad range of the electromagnetic spectrum and technologically relevant applications for photon harvesting and sensors.

Quantum phenomena are typically observable at length and time scales smaller than those of our everyday experience, often involving individual particles or excitations. The past few decades have seen a revolution in the ability to structure matter at the nanoscale, and experiments at the single particle level have become commonplace. This has opened wide new avenues for exploring and harnessing quantum mechanical effects in condensed matter. These quantum phenomena, in turn, have the potential to revolutionize the way we communicate, compute and probe the nanoscale world. Here, we review developments in key areas of quantum research in light of the nanotechnologies that enable them, with a view to what the future holds. Materials and devices with nanoscale features are used for quantum metrology and sensing, as building blocks for quantum computing, and as sources and detectors for quantum communication. They enable explorations of quantum behaviour and unconventional states in nano- and opto-mechanical systems, low-dimensional systems, molecular devices, nano-plasmonics, quantum electrodynamics, scanning tunnelling microscopy, and more. This rapidly expanding intersection of nanotechnology and quantum science/technology is mutually beneficial to both fields, laying claim to some of the most exciting scientific leaps of the last decade, with more on the horizon.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has the ability of revolutionizing our lives and society in a radical way, by enabling machine learning in the industry, business, health, transportation, and many other fields. The ability to recognize objects, faces, and speech, requires, however, exceptional computational power and time, which is conflicting with the current difficulties in transistor scaling due to physical and architectural limitations. As a result, to accelerate the progress of AI, it is necessary to develop materials, devices, and systems that closely mimic the human brain. In this work, we review the current status and challenges on the emerging neuromorphic devices for brain-inspired computing. First, we provide an overview of the memory device technologies which have been proposed for synapse and neuron circuits in neuromorphic systems. Then, we describe the implementation of synaptic learning in the two main types of neural networks, namely the deep neural network and the spiking neural network (SNN). Bio-inspired learning, such as the spike-timing dependent plasticity scheme, is shown to enable unsupervised learning processes which are typical of the human brain. Hardware implementations of SNNs for the recognition of spatial and spatio-temporal patterns are also shown to support the cognitive computation in silico. Finally, we explore the recent advances in reproducing bio-neural processes via device physics, such as insulating-metal transitions, nanoionics drift/diffusion, and magnetization flipping in spintronic devices. By harnessing the device physics in emerging materials, neuromorphic engineering with advanced functionality, higher density and better energy efficiency can be developed.

This roadmap on Nanotechnology for Catalysis and Solar Energy Conversion focuses on the application of nanotechnology in addressing the current challenges of energy conversion: 'high efficiency, stability, safety, and the potential for low-cost/scalable manufacturing' to quote from the contributed article by Nathan Lewis. This roadmap focuses on solar-to-fuel conversion, solar water splitting, solar photovoltaics and bio-catalysis. It includes dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), perovskite solar cells, and organic photovoltaics. Smart engineering of colloidal quantum materials and nanostructured electrodes will improve solar-to-fuel conversion efficiency, as described in the articles by Waiskopf and Banin and Meyer. Semiconductor nanoparticles will also improve solar energy conversion efficiency, as discussed by Boschloo et al in their article on DSSCs. Perovskite solar cells have advanced rapidly in recent years, including new ideas on 2D and 3D hybrid halide perovskites, as described by Spanopoulos et al 'Next generation' solar cells using multiple exciton generation (MEG) from hot carriers, described in the article by Nozik and Beard, could lead to remarkable improvement in photovoltaic efficiency by using quantization effects in semiconductor nanostructures (quantum dots, wires or wells). These challenges will not be met without simultaneous improvement in nanoscale characterization methods. Terahertz spectroscopy, discussed in the article by Milot et al is one example of a method that is overcoming the difficulties associated with nanoscale materials characterization by avoiding electrical contacts to nanoparticles, allowing characterization during device operation, and enabling characterization of a single nanoparticle. Besides experimental advances, computational science is also meeting the challenges of nanomaterials synthesis. The article by Kohlstedt and Schatz discusses the computational frameworks being used to predict structure–property relationships in materials and devices, including machine learning methods, with an emphasis on organic photovoltaics. The contribution by Megarity and Armstrong presents the 'electrochemical leaf' for improvements in electrochemistry and beyond. In addition, biohybrid approaches can take advantage of efficient and specific enzyme catalysts. These articles present the nanoscience and technology at the forefront of renewable energy development that will have significant benefits to society.

Batteries are commonly considered one of the key technologies to reduce carbon dioxide emissions caused by the transport, power, and industry sectors. We need to remember that not only the production of energy needs to be realized sustainably, but also the technologies for energy storage need to follow the green guidelines to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases effectively. To reach the sustainability goals, we have to make batteries with the performances beyond their present capabilities concerning their lifetime, reliability, and safety. To be commercially viable, the technologies, materials, and chemicals utilized in batteries must support scalability that enables cost-effective large-scale production.

As lithium-ion battery (LIB) is still the prevailing technology of the rechargeable batteries for the next ten years, the most practical approach to obtain batteries with better performance is to develop the chemistry and materials utilized in LIBs—especially in terms of safety and commercialization. To this end, silicon is the most promising candidate to obtain ultra-high performance on the anode side of the cell as silicon gives the highest theoretical capacity of the anode exceeding ten times the one of graphite. By balancing the other components in the cell, it is realistic to increase the overall capacity of the battery by 100%–200%. However, the exploitation of silicon in LIBs is anything else than a simple task due to the severe material-related challenges caused by lithiation/delithiation during battery cycling. The present review makes a comprehensive overview of the latest studies focusing on the utilization of nanosized silicon as the anode material in LIBs.

Semiconductor nanowire (NW) quantum devices offer a promising path for the pursuit and investigation of topologically-protected quantum states, and superconducting and spin-based qubits that can be controlled using electric fields. Theoretical investigations into the impact of disorder on the attainment of dependable topological states in semiconducting nanowires with large spin–orbit coupling and g-factor highlight the critical need for improvements in both growth processes and nanofabrication techniques. In this work, we used a hybrid lithography tool for both the high-resolution thermal scanning probe lithography and high-throughput direct laser writing of quantum devices based on thin InSb nanowires with contact spacing of 200 nm. Electrical characterization demonstrates quasi-ballistic transport. The methodology outlined in this study has the potential to reduce the impact of disorder caused by fabrication processes in quantum devices based on 1D semiconductors.

The tuning of exchange bias (EB) in nanoparticles has garnered significant attention due to its diverse range of applications. Here, we demonstrate EB in single-phase CoO nanoparticles, where two magnetic phases naturally emerge as the crystallite size decreases from 34.6 ± 0.8 to 10.8 ± 0.9 nm. The Néel temperature (T_N) associated with antiferromagnetic ordering decreases monotonically with the reduction in crystallite size, highlighting the significant influence of size effects. The 34.6 nm nanoparticles exhibit magnetization irreversibility between zero-field cooled (ZFC) and field-cooled (FC) states below T_N. With further reduction in size this irreversibility appears well above T_N, resulting in the absence of true paramagnetic regime which indicates the occurnace of an additional magnetic phase. The frequency-dependent ac-susceptibility in 10.8 nm nanoparticles suggests slow dynamics of disordered surface spins above T_N, coinciding with the establishment of long-range order in the core. The thermoremanent magnetization (TRM) and iso-thermoremanent magnetization (IRM) curves suggest a core–shell structure: the core is antiferromagnetic, and the shell consists of disordered surface spins causing ferromagnetic interaction. Hence, the EB in these CoO nanoparticles results from the exchange coupling between an antiferromagnetic core and a disordered shell that exhibits unconventional surface spin characteristics.

To obtain high-quality SiN_x films applicable to an extensive range of processes, such as gate spacers in fin field-effect transistors (FinFETs), the self-aligned quadruple patterning process, etc, a study of plasma with higher plasma density and lower plasma damage is crucial in addition to study on novel precursors for SiN_x plasma-enhanced atomic layer deposition (PEALD) processes. In this study, a novel magnetized PEALD process was developed for depositing high-quality SiN_x films using di(isopropylamino)silane (DIPAS) and magnetized N₂ plasma at a low substrate temperature of 200 °C. The properties of the deposited SiN_x films were analyzed and compared with those obtained by the PEALD process using a non-magnetized N₂ plasma source under the same conditions. The PEALD SiN_x film, produced using an external magnetic field (ranging from 0 to 100 G) during the plasma exposure step, exhibited a higher growth rate (∼1 Å/cycle) due to the increased plasma density. Additionally, it showed lower surface roughness, higher film density, and enhanced wet etch resistance compared to films deposited using the PEALD process with non-magnetized plasmas. This improvement can be attributed to the higher ion flux and lower ion energy of the magnetized plasma. The electrical characteristics, such as interface trap density and breakdown voltage, were also enhanced when the magnetized plasma was used for the PEALD process. Furthermore, when SiN_x films were deposited on high-aspect-ratio (30:1) trench patterns using the magnetized PEALD process, an improved step coverage of over 98% was achieved, in contrast to the conformality of SiN_x deposited using non-magnetized plasma. This enhancement is possibly a result of deeper radical penetration enabled by the magnetized plasma.

Although outstanding detectivities, InGaAs photodetectors for optic fiber communication are often costly due to the need for cooling. Therefore, cryogen-free and cost-effective alternatives working in telecommunication bands are highly desired. Here, we present a design of hot-electron photodetectors (HE PDs) with attributes of room-temperature operation and strong optical absorption over S and C bands (from 1460 to 1565 nm). The designed HE PD consists of a metal–semiconductor–metal hot-electron stack integrated with a front grating. Optical simulations reveal that mode hybridizations between Fabry–Pérot resonance and grating-induced surface plasmon excitation lead to high absorption efficiencies (≥0.9) covering S and C bands. Probability-based electrical calculations clarify that device responsivity is mainly determined by working wavelength on the premise of broadband strong absorption. Moreover, through comparison studies between the grating-assisted HE PD and purely planar microcavity system that serves as a reference, we highlight the design superiorities in average absorption and average responsivity with optimized values of 0.97 and 0.73 mA W⁻¹, respectively. The upgraded peformances of the designed device are promising for efficient photoelectric conversion in optic fiber communication systems.

This study explored the synthesis and sintering of potassium sodium niobate (KNN) nanoparticles, emphasizing morphology, crystal structure, and sintering methods. The as-synthesized KNN nanoparticles exhibited a spherical morphology below 200 nm. Solid state sintering (SSS) and laser-induced shockwave sintering (LISWS) were compared, with LISWS producing denser microstructures and improved grain growth. Raman spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction confirmed KNN perovskite structure, with LISWS demonstrating higher purity. High-resolution x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy spectra indicated increased binding energies in LISWS, reflecting enhanced density and crystallinity. Dielectric and loss tangent analyses showed temperature-dependent behavior, with LISWS-3 exhibiting superior properties. Antenna performance assessments revealed LISWS-3's improved directivity and reduced sidelobe radiation compared to SSS, attributed to its denser microstructure. Overall, LISWS proved advantageous for enhancing KNN ceramics, particularly in antenna applications.

In-plane anisotropic two-dimensional (2D) materials exhibit in-plane orientation-dependent properties. The anisotropic unit cell causes these materials to show lower symmetry but more diverse physical properties than in-plane isotropic 2D materials. In addition, the artificial stacking of in-plane anisotropic 2D materials can generate new phenomena that cannot be achieved in in-plane isotropic 2D materials. In this perspective we provide an overview of representative in-plane anisotropic 2D materials and their properties, such as black phosphorus, group IV monochalcogenides, group VI transition metal dichalcogenides with 1T' and T_d phases, and rhenium dichalcogenides. In addition, we discuss recent theoretical and experimental investigations of twistronics using in-plane anisotropic 2D materials. Both in-plane anisotropic 2D materials and their twistronics hold considerable potential for advancing the field of 2D materials, particularly in the context of orientation-dependent optoelectronic devices.

Nanostructured metal oxide semiconductors have emerged as promising nanoscale photocatalysts due to their excellent photosensitivity, chemical stability, non-toxicity, and biocompatibility. Enhancing the photocatalytic activity of metal oxide is critical in improving their efficiency in radical ion production upon optical exposure for various applications. Therefore, this review paper provides an in-depth analysis of the photocatalytic activity of nanostructured metal oxides, including the photocatalytic mechanism, factors affecting the photocatalytic efficiency, and approaches taken to boost the photocatalytic performance through structure or material modifications. This paper also highlights an overview of the recent applications and discusses the recent advancement of ZnO-based nanocomposite as a promising photocatalytic material for environmental remediation, energy conversion, and biomedical applications.

Over the past few decades, single-element semiconductors have received a great deal of attention due to their unique light-sensitive and heat-sensitive properties, which are of great application and research significance. As one promising material, selenium, being a typical semiconductor, has attracted significant attention from researchers due to its unique properties including high optical conductivity, anisotropic, thermal conductivity, and so on. To promote the application of selenium nanomaterials in various fields, numerous studies over the past few decades have successfully synthesized selenium nanomaterials in various morphologies using a wide range of physical and chemical methods. In this paper, we review and summarise the different methods of synthesis of various morphologies of selenium nanomaterials and discuss the applications of different nanostructures of selenium nanomaterials in optoelectronic devices, chemical sensors, and biomedical applications. Finally, we discuss possible challenges for selenium nanodevices and provide an outlook on the future applications of selenium nanomaterials.

With the increasing integration density of silicon-based circuits, traditional electrical interconnections have shown their technological limitations. In recent years, GeSn materials have attracted great interest due to their potential direct bandgap transition and compatibility with silicon-based technologies. GeSn materials, including GeSn films, GeSn alloys, and GeSn nanowires, are adjustable, scalable, and compatible with silicon. GeSn nanowires, as one-dimensional (1D) nanomaterials, including out-of-plane GeSn nanowires and in-plane GeSn nanowires, have different properties from those of bulk materials due to their distinctive structures. However, the synthesis and potential applications of out of plane GeSn nanowires are rarely compared to highlighting their current development status and research trends in relevant review papers. In this article, we present the preparation of out-of-plane GeSn nanowires using top-down (etching and lithography) and bottom-up (vapor–liquid–solid) growth mechanism in the vapor-phase method and supercritical fluid–liquid–solid, solution-liquid–solid, and solvent vapor growth mechanisms in the liquid-phase method) methods. Specifically, the research progress on typical out of plane GeSn nanowires are discussed, while some current development bottlenecks are also been identified. Finally, it is also provided a brief description of the applications of out-of-plane GeSn nanowires with various Sn contents and morphologies.

Flexible photodetectors (PDs) have garnered increasing attention for their potential applications in diverse fields, including weather monitoring, smart robotics, smart textiles, electronic eyes, wearable biomedical monitoring devices, and so on. Notably, perovskite nanostructures have emerged as a promising material for flexible PDs due to their distinctive features, such as a large optical absorption coefficient, tunable band gap, extended photoluminescence decay time, high carrier mobility, low defect density, long exciton diffusion lengths, strong self-trapped effect, good mechanical flexibility, and facile synthesis methods. In this review, we first introduce various synthesis methods for perovskite nanostructures and elucidate their corresponding optical and electrical properties, encompassing quantum dots, nanocrystals, nanowires, nanobelts, nanosheets, single-crystal thin films, polycrystalline thin films, and nanostructured arrays. Furthermore, the working mechanism and key performance parameters of optoelectronic devices are summarized. The review also systematically compiles recent advancements in flexible PDs based on various nanostructured perovskites. Finally, we present the current challenges and prospects for the development of perovskite nanostructures-based flexible PDs.

As the second leading cause of death worldwide, neoplastic diseases are one of the biggest challenges for public health care. Contemporary medicine seeks potential tools for fighting cancer within nanomedicine, as various nanomaterials can be used for both diagnostics and therapies. Among those of particular interest are superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs), due to their unique magnetic properties,. However, while the number of new SPIONs, suitably modified and functionalized, designed for medical purposes, has been gradually increasing, it has not yet been translated into the number of approved clinical solutions. The presented review covers various issues related to SPIONs of potential theranostic applications. It refers to structural considerations (the nanoparticle core, most often used modifications and functionalizations) and the ways of characterizing newly designed nanoparticles. The discussion about the phenomenon of protein corona formation leads to the conclusion that the scarcity of proper tools to investigate the interactions between SPIONs and human serum proteins is the reason for difficulties in introducing them into clinical applications. The review emphasizes the importance of understanding the mechanism behind the protein corona formation, as it has a crucial impact on the effectiveness of designed SPIONs in the physiological environment.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the accumulation of amyloid plaques in the brain. The toxicity of amyloid to neuronal cell surfaces arises from interactions between small intermediate aggregates, namely amyloid oligomers, and the cell membrane. The nature of these interactions changes with age and disease progression. In our previous work, we demonstrated that both membrane composition and nanoscale structure play crucial roles in amyloid-membrane interactions. In our previous work, we demonstrated that both membrane composition and nanoscale structure play crucial roles in amyloid toxicity, and that membrane models mimicking healthy neuron were less affected by amyloid than model membranes mimicking AD neuronal membranes. This understanding introduces the possibility of modifying membrane properties with membrane-active molecules, such as melatonin, to protect them from amyloid-induced damage. In the present study, we employed atomic force microscopy (AFM) and localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) to investigate the protective effects of melatonin. We utilized synthetic lipid membranes that mimic the neuronal cellular membrane at various stages of AD and explored their interactions with amyloid-β (1-42) in the presence of melatonin. Our findings reveal that the early diseased membrane model is particularly vulnerable to amyloid binding and subsequent damage. However, melatonin exerts its most potent protective effect on this early-stage membrane. These results suggest that melatonin could act at the membrane level to alleviate amyloid toxicity, offering the most protection during the initial stages of AD.

Despite the discovery of many chemotherapeutic drugs that prevent uncontrolled cell division processes in the last century, many studies are still being carried out to develop drugs with higher anticancer efficacy and lower level of side effects. Herein, we designed, synthesized, and characterized six novel coumarin-triazole hybrids, and evaluated for anticancer activity of the one with the highest potential against the breast cancer cell line, MCF-7 and human cervical cancer cell line, HeLa. Compound 21 which was the coumarin derivative including phenyl substituent with the lowest IC50 value displayed the highest cytotoxicity against the studied cancer cell line. Furthermore, the potential use of poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) nanoparticles (PLGA NPs) prepared by the emulsifying solvent evaporation method as a platform for a drug delivery system was studied on a selected coumarin derivative 21. This coumarin derivative-loaded PLGA NPs were produced with an average size of 225.90 ± 2.96 nm, -16.90 ± 0.85 mV zeta potential, and 4.12 ± 0.90 % drug loading capacity. The obtained 21-loaded nanoparticles were analyzed spectroscopically and microscopically with FT-IR, UV-Vis, and SEM as well as TGA, Raman, and XRD. The in vitro release of 21 from the nanoparticles exhibited a controlled release profile just over one month following a burst release in the initial six hours and in addition to this a total release ratio of %50 and %85 were obtained at pH 7.4 and 5.5, respectively. 21-loaded nanoparticles displayed remarkably effective anticancer activity than 21. The IC50 values were determined as IC50 (21-loaded NPs): 0.42 ± 0.01 mg/mL and IC50 (free 21 molecule): 5.74 ± 3.82 mg/mL against MCF-7 cells, and as IC50 (21-loaded NPs): 0.77 ± 0.12 mg/mL and IC50(free21 molecule): 1.32 ± 0.31 mg/mL against HeLa cells after the incubation period of 24h. Our findings indicated that triazole-substituted coumarins may be used as an anticancer agent by integrating them into a polymeric drug delivery system providing improved drug loading and effective controlled drug release.

Clean room facilities are becoming more popular in both academic and industry settings, including low-and middle-income countries. This has led to an increased demand for cost-effective gas sensors to monitor air quality. Here we have developed a gas sensor using CoNiO₂ nanoparticles through a cost-effective combustion method. The sensitivity and selectivity of the sensor towards CO₂ were influenced by the structure of the nanoparticles, which were affected by the reducing agent (biofuels) used during synthesis. Among all reducing agents, urea found to yield highly crystalline and uniformly distributed CoNiO₂ nanoparticles, which when developed into sensors showed high sensitivity (limit of detection: 200 ppm) and selectivity for the detection of CO₂ gas in the presence of common interfering volatile organic compounds observed in cleanroom facilities including ammonia, formaldehyde, acetone, toluene, ethanol, isopropanol and methanol. In addition, the urea-mediated nanoparticle-based sensors exhibited room temperature operation, high stability, prompt response and recovery rates, and excellent reproducibility. Consequently, the synthesis approach to nanoparticle-based, energy efficient and affordable sensors represent a benchmark for CO₂ sensing in cleanroom settings.

We report on the fabrication of a novel design of GaAs/(In,Ga)As/GaAs radial nanowire heterostructures on a Si 111 substrate, where, for the first time, the growth of inhomogeneous shells on a lattice mismatched core results in straight nanowires instead of bent. Nanowire bending caused by axial tensile strain induced by the (In,Ga)As shell on the GaAs core is reversed by axial compressive strain caused by the GaAs outer shell on the (In,Ga)As shell. Progressive nanowire bending and reverse bending in addition to the axial strain evolution during the two processes are accessed by in situ by X-ray diffraction. The diameter of the core, thicknesses of the shells, as well as the indium concentration and distribution within the (In,Ga)As quantum well are revealed by 2D energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy using a transmission electron microscope. Shell(s) growth on one side of the core without substrate rotation results in planar-like radial heterostructures in the form of free standing straight nanowires.

A hierarchical sea urchin-like hybrid metal oxide nanostructure of ZnO nanorods deposited on TiO2 porous hollow hemisphere with a thin zinc titanate interface layer is specifically designed and synthesized forming a combined type I straddling and type II staggered junctions. The HHSs, synthesized by electrospinning, facilitate light trapping and scattering. The ZnO nanorods offer a large surface area for improved surface oxidation kinetics The interface layer of zinc titanate (ZnTiO3) between the TiO2 HHSs and ZnO nanorods regulates the charge separation in a closely coupled hierarchy structure of ZnO/ZnTiO3/TiO2. The synergistic effects of improved light trapping, charge separation, and fast surface reaction kinetics result in a superior photoconversion efficiency of 1.07% for the photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting with an outstanding photocurrent density of 2.8 mA cm-2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE.

The fluorescence quenching of carboxyl-rich g-C3N4 nanoparticles was found to be selective to Ag+ and Ce3+ with a limit of detection as low as 30 pM for Ag+ ions. A solid-state thermal polycondensation reaction was used to produce g-C3N4 nanoparticles with distinct green fluorescence and high water solubility. Dynamic light scattering indicated an average nanoparticle size of 95 nm. The photoluminescence absorption and emission maxima were centered at 405 nm and 540 nm respectively which resulted in a large Stokes shift. Among different metal ion species, the carboxyl-rich g-C3N4 nanoparticles were selective to Ag+ and Ce3+ ions, as indicated by strong fluorescence quenching. The PL sensing of mixtures of Ag+/Ce3+ and Ce3+ followed static Stern-Volmer kinetics with the Stern-Volmer constants determined to be 74.18 ×10^3 M-1 and 27.2 ×10^3 M-1 respectively. The PL sensing of Ag+ followed modified Stern-Volmer kinetics. Sensing was also demonstrated using commercial filter paper functionalized with g-C3N4 nanoparticles, enabling practical on-site applications.

Over the last years metal halide perovskites have demonstrated remarkable potential for integration in light emitting devices. Heterostructures allow for tunable bandgap depending on the local anion composition, crucial for optoelectronic devices, but local structural effects of anion exchange in single crystals is not fully understood. Here, we investigate how the anion exchange of CsPbBr₃ nanowires fully and locally exposed to HCl vapor affects the local crystal structure, using nanofocused x-rays. We study the nanoscale composition and crystal structure as function of HCl exposure time and demonstrate the correlation of anion exchange with changes in the lattice parameter. The local composition was measured by x-ray fluorescence and x-ray diffraction, with general agreement of both methods but with much less variation using latter. The heterostructured nanowires exhibit unintentional gradients in composition, both axially and radially. Ferroelastic domains are observed for all HCl exposure times, and the magnitude of the lattice tilt at the domain walls scales with the Cl concentration.

The need for photosensors and gas sensors arises from their pivotal roles in various technological applications, ensuring enhanced efficiency, safety, and functionality in diverse fields. In this paper, interlinked PbS/Sb₂O₅ thin film has been synthesized by a magnetron sputtering method. We control the temperature to form the nanocomposite by using their different nucleation temperature during the sulfonation process. A nanostructured PbS/Sb₂O₅ with cross-linked morphology was synthesized by using this fast and efficient method. This method has also been used to grow a uniform thin film of nanocomposite. The photo-sensing and gas-sensing properties related to the PbS/Sb₂O₅ compared with those of other nanomaterials have also been investigated. The experimental and theoretical calculations reveal that the PbS/Sb₂O₅ exhibits extraordinarily superior photo-sensing and gas-sensing properties in terms of providing a pathway for electron transport to the electrode. The attractive highly sensitive photo and gas sensing properties of PbS/Sb₂O₅ make them applicable for many different kinds of applications. The responsivity and detectivity of PbS/Sb₂O₅ are 0.28 S/mWcm⁻² and 1.68 × 10¹¹ Jones respectively. The sensor response towards NO₂ gas was found to be 0.98 at 10 ppb with an limit of detection (LOD) of 0.083 ppb. The PbS/Sb₂O₅ exhibits high selectivity towards the NO₂ gas. Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) were used to analyze the geometries, electronic structure, and electronic absorption spectra of a light sensor fabricated by PbS/Sb₂O₅. The results are very analogous to the experimental results. Both photosensors and gas sensors are indispensable tools that contribute significantly to the evolution of technology and the improvement of various aspects of modern life.

W-doped ZnO thin films deposited on Si substrates with (100) orientation by sol–gel spin coating method at temperature 500 °C. W/Zn atomic ratio varies from 0% to 4%. Then, the UV detection performance analysis of p–n heterojunction UV photodetectors based on W-doped ZnO/Si is analyzed. The current–voltage curves of W-doped ZnO/Si are investigated in dark and exhibit diode-like rectifying behavior. Among doped ZnO/Si, sample with atomic ratio of W/Zn = 2% is the best candidate to study photodetector characteristics in UV range. The resulting device exhibits a rectification ratio RR of 5587 at ±5 V, a higher responsivity of 3.84 A W⁻¹ and a photosensitivity value of 34 at 365 nm under 0.5 mW cm⁻². The experimental findings reveal that the UV detection performance of the heterojunction-based photodetectors strongly dependent on the properties of metal oxide layer. The main goal of this work is to investigate the effect of W doping on the performance of ZnO/Si based photodetectors. Based on our results, it is observed that 2 at% of W dopant is the optimum amount of doping for high performance photodetector of ZnO:W/Si heterojunction thanks to the suppressed recombination ratio and enhanced carrier separation properties in the depletion zone.

We introduce a new scanning probe microscopy (SPM) concept called reverse tip sample scanning probe microscopy (RTS SPM), where the tip and sample positions are reversed as compared to traditional SPM. The main benefit of RTS SPM over the standard SPM configuration is that it allows for simple and fast tip changes. This overcomes two major limitations of SPM which are slow data acquisition and a strong dependency of the data on the tip condition. A probe chip with thousands of sharp integrated tips is the basis of our concept. We have developed a nanofabrication protocol for Si based probe chips and their functionalization with metal and diamond coatings, evaluated our probe chips for various RTS SPM applications (multi-tip imaging, SPM tomography, and correlative SPM), and showed the high potential of the RTS SPM concept.
