   Hi, this is more of a question than comment. I was wondering whether anyone has access to Volume 3 from 1950?? It seems a little hard to locate, but would help me a great deal, as I’m looking at the sponge species around Hawaii and the Pacific and literature is rather sparse. Many thanks for any help :0)

   The library is still working on scanning the earliest volumes, and they have custody of our only reference copies from that far back until they finish the scanning and mounting online. We expect to have vols. 1-25 finished and available by the end of this semester–in May or thereabouts.

   I think, that all issues of Pacific Science prior to 1977 were published without a copyright notice, so they are public domain, Am I right?

   Michal,
   No, the early issues remain under copyright. There are copyright notices in the opening pages of every issue. We just didn’t put the notice on the opening page of each article, the way we do nowadays. Nowadays, we also note which articles are in the public domain because the researchers work for government agencies.

   Michal,
   One example of a work not under copyright is Weijerman et al. (2008), Attempt to control Invasive Red Alga …, Pac. Sci. 62:517-532.

   As a researcher, I had to verify Joel’s words “There are copyright notices in the opening pages of every issue.” But I have found these results:
   There is copyright notice on the volume 23 from the year 1969 http://scholarspace.manoa.hawaii.edu/handle/10125/3347 and on each later volumes.

   There is not copyright notice on the volume 22 number 1 from the year 1968 http://scholarspace.manoa.hawaii.edu/handle/10125/7219
   and number 2
   http://scholarspace.manoa.hawaii.edu/handle/10125/6818

   So I can specify in detail copyright status of Pacific Science. Each volume since 1969 has copyright notice.

   But volume 22 from 1969 and each previous volume has been published without a copyright notice, so they are public domain.

   If I am still wrong, then I need a clear evidence about copyright restrictions on 1969 volumes and on previous ones. Thank you.

    Michal,

    You’re right. I checked the earliest printed volume on our reference shelf (from 1972) and saw the copyright notice on the Table of Contents page, but didn’t check before that because we had to donate our last copies of the early volumes for chopping, scanning, and uploading to the digital repository. I’ll double-check to make sure which volumes are now in the public domain and then add a note on this page listing Open Access volumes.
