    Description: An idealized 1:2 scale demonstrator and a numerical parameter optimization algorithm are proposed to closely reproduce the deformation shape and, thus, spatial strain directions of a real aerodynamically loaded civil aircraft spoiler using only four concentrated loads. Cost-efficient experimental studies on demonstrators of increasing complexity are required to transfer knowledge from coupons to full-scale structures and to build up confidence in novel structural health monitoring (SHM) technologies. Especially for testing novel sensor systems that depend on or are affected by mechanical strains, e.g., strain-based SHM methods, it is essential that the considered lab-scale structures reflect the strain states of the real structure at operational loading conditions. Finite element simulations with detailed models were performed for static strength analysis and for comparison to experimental measurements. The simulated and measured deformations and spatial strain directions of the idealized demonstrator correlated well with the numerical results of the real aircraft spoiler. Thus, using the developed idealized demonstrator, strain-based SHM systems can be tested under conditions that reflect operational aerodynamic pressure loads, while the test effort and costs are significantly reduced. Furthermore, the presented loading optimization algorithm can be easily adapted to mimic other pressure loads in plate-like structures to reproduce specific structural conditions.

    Description: This paper presents a methodology for the sizing and preliminary analysis of Multi-Prop UAVs. The methodology is founded on design trends that emerge from a vast and unique database that has been collected for such vehicles. The database includes geometry parameters, components’ weight, the power required, and flight performance estimation. For a given mission, the analysis enables optimization of a specific design of a Multi-Prop configuration for either minimal weight or minimal dimensions. As opposed to low-order and relatively simple analyses that are typically used in early design stages, the results presented in this paper include design trends and correlations within existing flying configurations and, therefore, contain many design constraints that typically emerge only during advanced stages of the design process.

    Description: Traditional swash plates generally have numerous parts, which may result in the abrasion of key parts. In this paper, to avoid the problems of traditional swash plates, a low-cost and high-reliability rotor micro-aerial vehicle integrated attitude-adjustment mechanism (IAAM) is designed based on compliant mechanism theory. The mechanism is composed of a series of curved plates and connecting convex plates. In this context, the relationship of the loads and deformations of a cantilever curved plate is analytically determined. Meanwhile, the geometrical parameters of the IAAM are optimized to the minimum mass by a genetic algorithm. The performance of the optimized IAAM is verified by finite element analysis. Modal and static analyses are performed to ensure that the mechanism meets the requirements of the flight process of the aircraft. The designed attitude adjustment mechanism reduces the complexity of the structure and installation and improves the structural reliability. Furthermore, this mechanism can be 3D printed, thus reducing production costs and improving production efficiency.

    Description: We present a high-order consistent compressible flow solver, based on a hybridized discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) discretization, for applications covering subsonic to hypersonic flow. In the context of high-order discretization, this broad range of applications presents unique difficulty, especially at the high-Mach number end. For instance, if a high-order discretization is to efficiently resolve shock and shear layers, it is imperative to use adaptive methods. Furthermore, high-Enthalpy flow requires non-trivial physical modeling. The aim of the present paper is to present the key enabling technologies. We discuss efficient discretization methods, including anisotropic metric-based adaptation, as well as the implementation of flexible modeling using object-oriented programming and algorithmic differentiation. We present initial verification and validation test cases focusing on external aerodynamics.

    Description: Base pressure becomes a decisive factor in governing the base drag of aerodynamic vehicles. While several experimental and numerical methods have already been used for base pressure analysis in suddenly expanded flows, their implementation is quite time-consuming. Therefore, we must develop a progressive approach to determine base pressure (β). Furthermore, a direct consideration of the influence of flow and geometric parameters cannot be studied by using these methods. This study develops a platform for data-driven analysis of base pressure (β) prediction in suddenly expanded flows, in which the influence of flow and geometric parameters including Mach number (M), nozzle pressure ratio (η), area ratio (α), and length to diameter ratio (φ) have been studied. Three different machine learning (ML) models, namely, artificial neural networks (ANN), support vector machine (SVM), and random forest (RF), have been trained using a large amount of data developed from response equations. The response equations for base pressure (β) were created using the response surface methodology (RSM) approach. The predicted results are compared with the experimental results to validate the proposed platform. The results obtained from this work can be applied in the right way to maximize base pressure in rockets and missiles to minimize base drag.

    Description: High vapor pressure propellants such as nitrous oxide are widely used in experimental hybrid and liquid rockets as they can be used in a self-pressurization mode, eliminating the need for external pressurization or pumps and simplifying the design of the rocket system. This approach causes the two-phase flow in the feed system and the injector orifices, which cannot be easily modeled and accounted for in the design. A dedicated test stand has been developed to better understand how the two-phase flow of the self-pressurizing propellant impacts the mass flow characteristics, enabling the simulation of the operating conditions in the rocket engine. The injectors have been studied in the range of ΔP. The flow regimes have been identified, which can be predicted by the SPI and HEM models. It has been shown that the two-phase flow quality upstream of the injector may impact the discharge coefficient in the SPI region and the accuracy of the HEM model. It has been found that the transition to the critical flow region depends on the L/D ratio of the injector orifice. A series of conclusions can be drawn from this work to design the rocket injector with a self-pressurizing propellant to better predict the mass flow rate and ensure stable combustion.

    Description: This article presents the development of the electric turbofan engine in distributed architecture with a design thrust in the range of 3 to 7.5 and from 7.5 to 30 kN for small and medium-sized unmanned aerial vehicles. The engine subsystems are considered as separate smart modules with a built-in control system, exchanging data via a digital channel with the central engine control and diagnostics unit. The key smart engine units are combined in the following subsystems: starter and turbine generators, oil pumps, actuator of guide vanes, fuel pumps, fuel metering unit, control and diagnostic unit. All pumps and guide vane actuator are electrically driven. Control and monitoring signals are transmitted via a digital bus. Functional and reliability analysis and the technical configuration design of each subsystem are presented. Based on analysis of the architecture of distributed control systems for a gearbox-free electric engine, different configurations of described subsystems are proposed.

    Description: This paper proposes a new shape-based method in spherical coordinates to solve three-dimensional rendezvous problems. Compared with the existing shape-based methods, the proposed method does not need parameter optimization. Moreover, it improves the flexibility of orbit fitting, greatly reduces the velocity increment and maximum thrust acceleration, and ensures the orbit safety to a certain extent. The shaping function can provide the initial estimate for numerical trajectory optimization and improve the convergence rate in a certain range when combined with the normalization method. The superiority of the proposed method over the existing methods is demonstrated by two numerical examples. Its effectiveness at initial estimation generation in the indirect optimization of a low-thrust trajectory is demonstrated by the third example.

    Description: Multiple competing factors are forcing aircraft designers to reconsider the underwing engine pod configuration typically seen on most modern commercial aircraft. One notable concern is increasing environmental regulations on noise emitted by aircraft. In an attempt to satisfy these constraints while maintaining or improving vehicle performance, engineers have been experimenting with some innovative aircraft designs which place the engines above the wings or embedded in the fuselage. In one configuration, a blended wing concept vehicle utilizes rectangular jet exhaust ports exiting from above the wing ahead of the trailing edge. While intuitively one would think that this design would reduce the noise levels transmitted to the ground due to the shielding provided by the wing, experimental studies have shown that this design can actually increase noise levels due to interactions of the jet exhaust with the aft wing surface and flat trailing edge. In this work, we take another look at this rectangular exhaust port configuration with some notional modifications to the geometry of the trailing edge to determine if the emitted noise levels due to jet interactions can be reduced with respect to a baseline configuration. We consider various horizontal and vertical offsets of the jet exit with respect to a flat plate standing in for the aft wing surface. We then introduce a series of sinusoidal deformations to the trailing edge of the plate of varying amplitude and wave number. Our results show that the emitted sound levels due to the jet–surface interactions can be significantly altered by the proposed geometry modifications. While sound levels remained fairly consistent over many configurations, there were some that showed both increased and decreased sound levels in specific directions. We present results here for the simulated configurations which showed the greatest decrease in overall sound levels with respect to the baseline. These results provide strong indications that such geometry modifications can potentially be tailored to optimize for further reductions in sound levels.

    Description: Background—In aircraft engine maintenance, the majority of parts, including engine blades, are inspected visually for any damage to ensure a safe operation. While this process is called visual inspection, there are other human senses encompassed in this process such as tactile perception. Thus, there is a need to better understand the effect of the tactile component on visual inspection performance and whether this effect is consistent for different defect types and expertise groups. Method—This study comprised three experiments, each designed to test different levels of visual and tactile abilities. In each experiment, six industry practitioners of three expertise groups inspected the same sample of N = 26 blades. A two-week interval was allowed between the experiments. Inspection performance was measured in terms of inspection accuracy, inspection time, and defect classification accuracy. Results—The results showed that unrestrained vision and the addition of tactile perception led to higher inspection accuracies of 76.9% and 84.0%, respectively, compared to screen-based inspection with 70.5% accuracy. An improvement was also noted in classification accuracy, as 39.1%, 67.5%, and 79.4% of defects were correctly classified in screen-based, full vision and visual–tactile inspection, respectively. The shortest inspection time was measured for screen-based inspection (18.134 s) followed by visual–tactile (22.140 s) and full vision (25.064 s). Dents benefited the most from the tactile sense, while the false positive rate remained unchanged across all experiments. Nicks and dents were the most difficult to detect and classify and were often confused by operators. Conclusions—Visual inspection in combination with tactile perception led to better performance in inspecting engine blades than visual inspection alone. This has implications for industrial training programmes for fault detection.
