    Notes: Abstract Electrona antarctica and Bathylagus antarcticus are dominant fishes in the Southern Ocean pelagic ecosystem with disparate life histories, making them excellent subjects for comparative studies. Twenty-one indices of nutritional condition were compared in both species by observing changes in each index as it varied spatially and temporally in association with the marginal ice-zone bloom in the northwestern Weddell Sea. E. antarctica and B. antarcticus exhibited very different patterns of response to the bloom. Nutritional condition increased in 11 of 21 measures in E. antarctica, suggesting that it was in poorer condition at ice-covered stations and in greatly improved condition in post-bloom, open-water stations. The data, combined with a few observations of larvae, indicate that E. antarctica increases feeding before the spring bloom, rapidly building stores of lipid, which are probably used for spawning. In contrast, only three measures of condition were variable in B. antarcticus, and lipid actually decreased from ice-covered to open water. RNA:DNA values increased in open water, coinciding with an increase in food volume present in their guts. These observations, coupled with observations of larvae in ice-covered stations, suggest that B. antarcticus possesses sufficient energetic stores to spawn prior to the bloom, so that larvae are able to fully utilize available resources associated with the spring bloom. Increased somatic growth, as indicated by RNA:DNA, may not begin until later, when the bloom was beginning to decline. Earlier work, which suggested that the deeper living, non-migrating species, like B. antarcticus, would not be affected by the bloom until after shallower, migratory species, like E. antarctica, is supported. Of the assays tested, RNA:DNA appeared to be the most sensitive. The combined assessment of many measures including biochemical, compositional, dietary, and age estimates from single specimens is possible if the samples are treated with sufficient care. The reliance upon a single measure to help interpret the ecology of a species, especially in nekton-sized species, is not as effective as techniques used in combination.

    Notes: In trout stored in refrigerated sea water (RSW), sodium ions did not penetrate the white muscle appreciably until the adenosine triphosphate of the muscle had been largely destroyed. It appeared that the skin might also exert control over sodium penetration, particularly during the first day of storage. Loss of potassium ions did not become evident until later, the commencement of appreciable loss corresponding approximately to the exhaustion of the muscle as judged by cessation of lactic acid formation. No relation between magnesium ion uptake by the white muscle and these biochemical changes was detected.Trout and sockeye salmon stored in RSW lost weight during the first day or two of storage and gained weight thereafter. The period of weight loss appeared to correspond to the period during which slime secretion from the skin continued post-mortem, and was apparently independent of the state of exhaustion of the fish at death. In contrast, weight changes in skinned muscle were dependent on the state of exhaustion of the fish. Muscle from unexercised fish lost weight during the first day of storage and gained weight thereafter, while muscle from exhausted fish gained weight from the time of immersion.

    Notes: Summary We carried out investigations on C3H, NMRI, C57B1/6, Balb/c, Balb/cN, and DBA inbred mouse strains in the shuttle-box to see whether their learning behavior is genetically controlled. The highly different learning behavior of the parental strains made it possible to test the F1 hybrids and the F2 generation. The environmental influences were standardized as much as possible. In particular, influences possible during the lactation period were excluded by using foster breeding. The results enable us to postulate monogenic inheritance for the learning speed in the shuttle-box. The inheritance is interpreted as codominant. The investigations are part of a basic study in mammalian behavior genetics from the human genetic aspect.

    Description: Realistic simulation of structurally complex reservoirs (SCR) is challenging in at least three ways: (1) geological structures must be represented and discretized accurately on vastly different length scales; (2) extreme ranges and discontinuous variations of material properties have to be associated with the discretized structures and accounted for in the computations; and (3) episodic, highly transient and often localized events such as well shut-in have to be resolved adequately within the overall production history, necessitating a highly adaptive resolution of time. To facilitate numerical experiments that elucidate the emergent properties, typical states and state transitions of SCRs, an application programmer interface (API) called complex systems modelling platform (CSMP++) has been engineered in ANSI/ISO C++. It implements a geometry and process-based SCR decomposition in space and time, and uses an algebraic multigrid solver (SAMG) for the spatio-temporal integration of the governing partial differential equations. This paper describes a new SCR simulation workflow including a two-phase fluid flow model that is compared with ECLIPSE in a single-fracture flow simulation. Geologically realistic application examples are presented for incompressible 2-phase flow, compressible 3-phase flow, and pressure-diffusion in a sector-scale model of a structurally complex reservoir.

    Description: 〈span〉〈div〉Abstract〈/div〉At the 2015 United Nations International Climate Change Conference in Paris (COP21), 197 national parties committed to limit global warming to well below 2°C. But current plans and pace of progress are still far from sufficient to achieve this objective. Here we review the role that geoscience and the subsurface could play in decarbonizing electricity production, industry, transport and heating to meet UK and international climate change targets, based on contributions to the 2019 Bryan Lovell meeting held at the Geological Society of London. Technologies discussed at the meeting involved decarbonization of electricity production via renewable sources of power generation, substitution of domestic heating using geothermal energy, use of carbon capture and storage (CCS), and more ambitious technologies such as bioenergy and carbon capture and storage (BECCS) that target negative emissions. It was noted also that growth in renewable energy supply will lead to increased demand for geological materials to sustain the electrification of the vehicle fleet and other low-carbon technologies. The overall conclusion reached at the 2019 Bryan Lovell meeting was that geoscience is critical to decarbonization, but that the geoscience community must influence decision-makers so that the value of the subsurface to decarbonization is understood.〈/span〉
