Notes: Measurements of the ultrasonic attenuation and relative velocity changes of longitudinal waves of frequencies between 5 and 25 MHz are reported for clear yellow Dominican amber at low temperatures. Between 4 and 130 K the attenuation and velocity change are glasslike in their temperature and frequency dependencies. At higher temperatures both properties seemed to be affected by the α or β viscoelastic relaxations. Similar ultrasonic behavior is reported for commercial polymethylmethacrylate. Our results at low temperatures compare well quantitatively with data of other organic and inorganic glasses, except for the stronger logarithmic frequency-dependent velocity change which is observed for both materials.

Notes: Flavobacterium columnare is an important pathogen of freshwater fish, implicated in skin and gill disease, often causing high mortality. An outbreak of skin disease in fingerling and adult Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus (L.), cultivated in a recirculation system, was investigated. Four strains were isolated and characterized by biochemical reactions, enzyme production, fatty acid profile and analysis of the 16S-23S rDNA intergenic spacer region. All strains were identified as F. columnare. Experimental infection assays with one of these strains (BZ-5-02) were conducted and pathogenicity (by intramuscular route) was demonstrated in Nile tilapia and channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus (Rafinesque). This is the first report of characterization of Brazilian strains of F. columnare.

Notes: Abstract The two-proton pickup (14C,16O) reaction was studied for the N=82 target nuclei 58 140 Ce82, 60 142 Nd82, and 62 144 Sm82. We observe dominating g.s. transitions and selective population of the first excited 2+ and 3− states, in analogy to the two-proton pickup (p, t)-reaction on the proton-magic Sn-isotopes.

Notes: Abstract The CD3OH molecule has been investigated for new far-infrared laser lines by optically pumping with a cw waveguide CO2 laser. The increased tunability (300 MHz) with respect to a conventional CO2 laser permits to pump many new CD3OH lines. As a consequence 108 new laser lines have been discovered, ranging from 42.9 to 1155 μm in wavelength. On some lines the effect of an electric Stark field has been investigated demonstrating a laser frequency tuning. The total number of known FIR laser lines from CD3OH is increased to about 340 making this molecule the most prolific together with CH3OH.
