Notes: [Auszug] These results indicate that the state of the intracellular water is characteristic of the physiological state of the nerve trunk. It was therefore felt that the characteristics of the intracellular water should be affected by the application of various local anaesthetics in a way indicative of the ...

Notes: Abstract An error in a previous analysis of a simple model for myelinated nerve propagation is pointed out and rectified. The model previously chosen does not lend itself to analysis because it has a region ofinfinite negative conductivity which leads to an instability in steady propagation. A model which assumes afinite negative conductivity is examined in detail and a more general results is derived.

Notes: [Auszug] Chicken erythroid cells contain a tissue specific histone known as H5 in addition to the five major histone species found in other organisms. The mRNA coding for this histone has been isolated by indirect immuno-precipitation from immature, non-dividing reticulocytes in which this is the only ...

Notes: Abstract The scale-up of a mathematical model of a (10 dm3) pilot-plant zinc electrowinning cells is considered. All scale-up effects considered were relatively small in magnitude and their inclusion required only readily available full-size cell data. Excellent agreement was obtained between the model predictions and experimental results from an (instrumented) operational full-size cell.

Notes: Abstract A series of experiments were conducted to investigate the factors affecting the efficiency of zinc electrowinning. The experiments were conducted in 10-1 cells using a high purity industrial zinc sulphate solution. The lowest specific energy consumption achieved in the cells was 2637 kWh t−1 Zn under the following conditions: $$\begin{gathered} 70 g1^{ - 1} Zn in cell solution \hfill \\ 180 g1^{ - 1} H_2 SO_4 in cell solution \hfill \\ 45^\circ C cell temperature \hfill \\ 400A m^{ - 2} current density \hfill \\ \end{gathered} $$ Further energy savings can be achieved by reducing the current density but this would also reduce the cellroom production capacity. Increasing the electrolyte temperature to 50° C also reduced the energy consumption, however additives capable of controlling deposit morphology at these high temperatures were required. The effects of zinc concentration, acid concentration, deposition time and additive levels are also reported.

Notes: Abstract A set of (95) equations forming a dynamic, nonlinear model of an industrial pilot-plant scale zinc electrowinning cell fed with high purity electrolyte is presented. Only the solution of the steady-state model is considered in this paper. Values for unknown model parameters have either been obtained from the literature or else estimated using experimental data taken from the pilot-plant cell. Sensitivity studies showed that uncertainties in the temperature dependency of the zinc and hydrogen reaction exchange current densities and the exchange coefficient for the hydrogen reaction have a major effect on the model predictions. Excellent agreement between predicted and experimental results was obtained, provided that cathodic mass transfer effects were included in the model. Both parameter estimation and solution of the steady-state model were carried out using the SPEEDUP flowsheeting package.

Notes: Abstract A dynamic mathematical model for a full-size zinc electrowinning cell, operating with high purity feed, has previously been presented. Several possible industrial applications of the model are demonstrated in this paper. The examples considered were (i) the optimization of cell operating conditions, for both maximum zinc production and minimum energy consumption cases, (ii) a preliminary investigation of the benefits of a dual circuit configuration and (iii) the dynamic simulation of a (feedback) controlled cell. In each case, by providing information on energy consumption, current efficiency and zinc production rate, use of the model permitted the economic potential of these options to be readily determined.

Notes: Abstract Degenerate perturbation theory is used to calculate energy levels of stationary states of the quantized discrete self-trapping (QDST) equation in the weak dispersion limit. Two specific applications are described: (1) the CH stretch vibrations of benzene, and (2) a long molecular chain with nearest-neighbour interactions and periodic boundary conditions.
