Description / Table of Contents: Summary Our laboratory is engaged in research on adhesion between concrete and steel, especially as regards surfacereinforced concrete. This expression covers a new method of bonding concrete and steel by means of synthetic resin gluing. Plain concrete has low shear and tensile strength. Reinforcing enables it to acquires strength for such loads and improves its mechanical properties. Bars are embedded in the concrete which, once hardened, will establish satisfactory bonds. However, adhesion of a layer of concrete poured on to a steel plate is very poor. Bond will be effective only if a thin layer of resin is placed between the two materials. Another method consists of gluing metal sheets on to hardened concrete. In this way it is possible to reinforce structures to bear loads for which they were not initially designed. The present paper deals with this latter type of gluing, particularly examining the adhesive strength of the resin which prevents sliding between the steel and concrete surfaces. Adhesiveness depends on: -the composition and qualities of the resin used, -the surface state of materials to be glued, above all their roughness, -the properties of these surfaces. Adhesion is a complex phenomenon. Indeed, we know little of the crystalline structure of resins and the various authors writing on the subject have not given a comparable definition of roughness. Moreover, the properties of surfaces develop with time. To contribute to this research, we have tried to set up stable experimental models, capable of offering reproducible results under set conditions. In so doing, we hope to have improved knowledge of the principal problems of adhesion. The article continues with details of experimental devices to study the shear strength of samples. We define two types of test for shear under tension and compression. In the second and third parts of this paper, we describe the development of all the techniques used during the various tests and controls. This work is the basis for tests being carried out. The techniques have proved that the composites material (steel-resin-concrete) can be studied systematically only if a number of factors are changed: -volumic fraction of components; -structure and mechanical properties of material and their bonding surfaces, -methods for designing and setting up experimental models -loading procedure The scanning electron micrographs show that it is possible to obtain perfect adhesion between bonding surfaces. Measuring the state of bonding surfaces improves accuracy in judging roughness and will help to draw up basic requirements for the preparation of such surfaces on materials to be assembled. By pursuing this work we hope to be able to define the principal characteristics of adhesion.

Description / Table of Contents: Résumé Les effets secondaires de l'hyphomycète entomopathogène, Beauveria bassiana (Bals.)
Notes: Abstract Secondary effects of the entomopathogenic hyphomycete Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuill. were investigated on adults of Leptinotarsa decemlineata Say (Coleoptera:Chrysomelidae) treated as newly moulted 4th-instar larvae. Fecundity and egg hatching were monitored in surviving females mated with surviving males. When reared at 22°C, adult survivors showed a lessening of their reproductive potential during their whole life. According to the fungal inoculum dosage, the reductions of the total number of eggs laid per female and the mean number of eggs per egg mass ranged from 20% to 56% and from 18% to 46%, respectively. In contrast, at 25°C, the fecundity of survivors was not affected by the fungal infection. This variability of the secondary effects of B. bassiana according to temperature conditions might be related to the lower infection level of treated larvae at 25°C. Moreover, at both temperatures, eggs laid by females surviving fungal infection as larvae were as fertile as eggs laid by control insects. It is concluded that secondary effects of B. bassiana on the fecundity of the Colorado Potato Beetle are temperature-dependent and that they could become negligible at high temperatures under field conditions.

Description: We present in this paper a comparison between different type-II InAs/GaSb superlattice (T2SL) photodiodes and focal plane array (FPA) in the mid-wavelength infrared domain to understand which phenomenon drives the performances of the T2SL structure in terms of quantum efficiency (QE). Our measurements on test photodiodes suggest low minority carrier diffusion length in the “InAs-rich” design, which penalizes carriers' collection in this structure for low bias voltage and front side illumination. This analysis is completed by a comparison of the experimental data with a fully analytic model, which allows to infer a hole diffusion length shorter than 100 nm. In addition, measurements on a FPA with backside illumination are finally presented. Results show an average QE in the 3–4.7 μ m window equal to 42% for U bias  = −0.1 V, 77 K operating temperature and no anti-reflection coating. These measurements, completed by modulation transfer function and noise measurements, reveal that the InAs-rich design, despite a low hole diffusion length, is promising for high performance infrared imaging applications.

Description: We demonstrate the use of extreme ultra-violet (EUV) laboratory lasers in probing energy transport in laser irradiated solid targets. EUV transmission through targets containing a thin layer of iron (50 nm) encased in plastic (CH) after irradiation by a short pulse (35 fs) laser focussed to irradiances 3 × 10 16 Wcm −2 is measured. Heating of the iron layer gives rise to a rapid decrease in EUV opacity and an increase in the transmission of the 13.9 nm laser radiation as the iron ionizes to Fe 5+ and above where the ion ionisation energy is greater than the EUV probe photon energy (89 eV). A one dimensional hydrodynamic fluid code HYADES has been used to simulate the temporal variation in EUV transmission (wavelength 13.9 nm) using IMP opacity values for the iron layer and the simulated transmissions are compared to measured transmission values. When a deliberate pre-pulse is used to preform an expanding plastic plasma, it is found that radiation is important in the heating of the iron layer while for pre-pulse free irradiation, radiation transport is not significant.
