    Notes: Complex structure, poorly understood sedimentology and poor biostratigraphic control make the Upper Jurassic Humber Group of the South Central Graben one of the least understood and most complex hydrocarbon reservoirs of the North Sea. Detailed logging of available core from 19 exploration wells has been combined with an improved understanding of the relevance of trace fossils and a recognition of important base-level variations to provide a greatly enhanced understanding of the depositional system active within the area at that time. A new sedimentological model, based upon the distribution of facies and facies associations, illustrates that Upper Jurassic structure and consequent basin geometry were the principal controls upon the distribution of depositional environments. Rifting and second-order transgression controlled the back-stepping onlap patterns observed and higher frequency base-level fluctuations controlled the internal architecture of individual sandbodies. The model presented accounts for features of these deposits that were previously considered anomalous, such as the thickness of bioturbated sandstones, paucity of foreshore deposits and complex age relationships of sands.

    Notes: Progradational shoreface tongues preserve a near-complete depositional record of relative sea-level highstands, falls and lowstands. Two distinct styles of progradational shoreface tongue are examined in an extensive outcrop and subsurface dataset from Late Cretaceous strata of the Book Cliffs area, Utah, representing (i) highstand through attached lowstand progradation and (ii) highstand through detached lowstand progradation. Using this dataset, key geometrical attributes of the shoreface tongues and their internal facies architecture are identified and quantified that enable the reconstruction of relative sea-level fall history. For example, attached, wave-dominated lowstand shoreface deposits record a slow (0.2– 0.3 mm yr–1), low-magnitude (〉 14 m) relative sea-level fall punctuated by minor rises. Detached, weakly wave-influenced lowstand shoreface deposits record a more rapid (0.4–0.5 mm yr–1), high-magnitude (〉 45 m) relative sea-level fall synchronous with a marked change in sediment delivery and depositional process regime at the shoreline.

    Notes: The effect of cellulase treatment on the physical dewatering of primary sewage sludge has been investigated. Although cellulase treatment rapidly increases the sedimentation rate of diluted sludge, no significant advantage has been found in the settling of undiluted sludge. An extract produced from cellulase-treated sewage sludge has been used as a medium for the growth of yeast with a view to single-cell protein production.

    Notes: Tetrahymena was continuously cultivated in a series of stirred tank reactors with recycle. By holding part of the reactor train at a higher temperature than the remainder a synchronizing influence was introduced into the cells' environment. The system resulted in division occurring preferentially in a small contiguous group of the reactors, this effect being observed in both the number of cells found in each reactor and also their size distribution.

    Description: The Valanginian-aged Mulichinco Formation was deposited in the Neuquen Basin (west-central Argentina) during and immediately after a major fall in sea level, partially triggered by a tectonic inversion pulse. The formation represents a lowstand wedge where excellent outcrops, together with refined biostratigraphic coverage, have permitted the detailed examination of contemporaneous non-marine and marine deposits. Fourteen facies associations were identified in the Mulichinco Formation. They represent accumulation in a variety of environments ranging from gravelly fluvial braidplains to outer-shelf marine settings. Distribution of depositional environments, together with the identification of key surfaces and stratal patterns, has resulted in the identification of early and late lowstand, transgressive and highstand systems tracts. Accordingly, the Mulichinco lowstand wedge comprises one third-order sequence that lasted about 2 Ma and represents a lowstand sequence set. The character of shoreline sedimentation was highly variable along strike within the Mulichinco depositional area and alluvial deposits were not developed within incised valleys. Tectonically derived topography, basin physiography and fault-controlled subsidence are interpreted to have been the main controls on the evolution of the Mulichinco lowstand wedge. The results of this study have important implications for understanding both the history of Neuquen Basin and illustrating the previously undocumented architectural complexity that may exist within lowstand wedges.
