    Description: La vida académica de Luis Fernando Lara se ha tejido entre la teoría lingüística, la práctica lexicográfica y la crítica a las políticas lingüísticas aplicadas al español, así como a las lenguas indoamericanas. Su proyecto pionero de un diccionario integral del español de México ha ofrecido una alternativa a la lexicografía contrastiva tradicional. Los frutos de esta labor de casi cinco décadas inspiraron a varios lingüistas a participar en esta obra dividida en dos volúmenes, donde se incluyen investigaciones históricas, filosóficas, lingüísticas, literarias, lenguas indoamericanas, críticas de actitudes, etc. A estas investigaciones académicas se suma la inspiración poética y la testimonial de los autores. En este primer volumen se abordan los temas de lexicología y lexicografía históricas.

    Notes: Abstract. This paper deals with statistical methods for modelling individual behavior when the endogenous variable is a nonnegative integer. Examples are the number of children, the number of job changes or the number of shopping trips in a given period. Several approaches—Poisson, robust Poisson, negative binomial (NEGBIN), NEGBINk, hurdle Poisson, truncated-at-zero Poisson—are discussed with a focus on specification, estimation, and testing. An application to labor mobility data illustrates the gain obtained by carefully taking into account the specific structure of the data.

    Notes: Abstract. A large number of different Pseudo-R2 measures for some common limited dependent variable models are surveyed. Measures include those based solely on the maximized likelihoods with and without the restriction that slope coefficients are zero, those which require further calculations based on parameter estimates of the coefficients and variances and those that are based solely on whether the qualitative predictions of the model are correct or not. The theme of the survey is that while there is no obvious criterion for choosing which Pseudo-R2 to use, if the estimation is in the context of an underlying latent dependent variable model, a case can be made for basing the choice on the strength of the numerical relationship to the OLS-R2 in the latent dependent variable. As such an OLS-R2 can be known in a Monte Carlo simulation, we summarize Monte Carlo results for some important latent dependent variable models (binary probit, ordinal probit and Tobit) and find that a Pseudo-R2 measure due to McKelvey and Zavoina scores consistently well under our criterion. We also very briefly discuss Pseudo-R2 measures for count data, for duration models and for prediction-realization tables.

    Notes: Abstract While the principle of delegation has become well established on the national level for monetary policy, fiscal policies remain in the hands of policy makers depending on rent-seeking interest groups. We argue that the Maastricht Treaty provides a unique international commitment that enables governments to follow restrictive fiscal policies by attributing their negative side-effects to Europe, and to implement austerity measures despite rising unemployment or a decline in growth. Hence, the popularity of the European idea is instrumented to enforce fiscal discipline. The paper outlines the political economy framework and presents new econometric evidence.

    Notes: Abstract Generation size and structure may have substantial effects on the labor market. This perspective is crucial for the German economy which is one of the most rapidly ageing societies. The paper studies the effects of relative cohort size and relative cohort age on unemployment. The time-series analysis employs cointegration techniques to discriminate between short-run and long-run developments. The econometric investigations suggest that in the long-run, there is no sufficient evidence that young cohorts experience higher unemployment rates if their cohort size is relatively high. In the short-run, there is in general a positive impact of relative cohort size and relative cohort age on unemployment.
