Description: Defining a procedure to calculate the H/V spectral ratio of seismic noise has recently been the focus of several studies. Although some issues have been addressed and a general procedure to follow in choosing the optimal seismological equipment, carrying out the measurements and analyzing the data has been agreed upon by the majority of specialists in this field, some points still remain open. One open question is whether transients should be avoided when H/V spectral ratios are calculated. Starting from contradictory results of previous papers, an ad-hoc experiment at the Nauen test site (Germany) was conducted to verify the influence of transients on the H/V spectral ratio of seismic noise. We show, consistent with some previous studies, that transients generated by high frequency content sources can amplify spectral ratio peaks at low frequencies. After careful polarization analysis of the data and estimation of the spectral amplitude decay with distance, we provide an explanation in terms of the composition of the wavefield over certain distance ranges. Our results highlight the importance of a better understanding of the wavefield composition for better exploiting the potential of H/V spectral ratio method.

Description: We present an update of the local magnitude scale previously calibrated for Northwestern Turkey by Baumbach et al. (2003). The path coverage in the westernmost part of the analysed area has been increased, as well as the number of amplitudes for distance greater than 110 km. Furthermore, a set of recordings from accelerometric stations operated by the Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute (KOERI) has been merged with the recordings by the Sapanca-Bolu and GermanTaskForce seismological networks. In all, 4047 recordings from 528 earthquakes recorded by 31 seismometers and 23 accelerometers are considered to calibrate the local magnitude scale over a hypocentral distance range from 10 to 190 km. By analyzing the unit covariance matrix and the resolution matrix, we show how the source-to-station geometries of the seismic and strong motion networks affect the uncertainties of the computed station corrections, attenuation coefficients, and magnitudes. The assumptions made concerning the reference station correction, and the change in the amplification for the Wood-Anderson torsion seismograph from 2800 to 2080 (Uhrhammer and Collins, 1990) introduced an offset of about 0.34 in the magnitudes with respect to Baumbach et al. (2003), with the updated local magnitude scale ranges from 0.50 to 5.91. The distribution of the residuals with distance confirms that the extension of both the magnitude and distance ranges and the improved path coverage have preserved the high quality that characterized the data set analyzed by Baumbach et al. (2003).

Description: We generated a 13-year InSAR time series from 1995– 2008 to investigate the spatiotemporal characteristics of two neighboring volcano’s deformations for the Lazufre volcanic area, central Andes. The data reveal two scales of uplift initiating during the observation time: (1) a largescale uplift started in 1997 that shows an increase of the mean uplift rate of up to 3.2 cm/yr, now affecting several eruptive centers situated in an area larger than 1800 km2 and (2) a small-scale uplift located at Lastarria volcano, which is the only volcano to show strong fumarolic activity in decades, with most of the clear deformation apparently not observed before 2000. Both the large and small uplift signals can be explained by magmatic or hydrothermal sources located at about 13 km and 1 km deep, respectively. To test a possible relationship, we use numerical modeling and estimate that the depth inflating source increased the tensile stress close to the shallow source. We discuss how the deep inflating source may have disturbed the shallow one and triggered the observed deformation at Lastarria.
