    Description: The Martian Moons Exploration (MMX) spacecraft is a JAXA mission to Mars and its moons Phobos and Deimos. MMX will be equipped with the Circum-Martian Dust Monitor (CMDM) which is a newly developed light-weight (650g) large area (1m〈sup〉2〈/sup〉) dust impact detector. Cometary meteoroid streams (also referred to as trails) exist along the orbits of comets, forming fine structures of the interplanetary dust cloud. The streams consist predominantly of the largest cometary particles (with sizes of approximately 100μm to 1 cm) which are ejected at low speeds and remain very close to the comet orbit for several revolutions around the Sun. The Interplanetary Meteoroid Environment for eXploration (IMEX) dust streams in space model is a new and recently published universal model for cometary meteoroid streams in the inner Solar System. We use IMEX to study the detection conditions of cometary dust stream particles with CMDM during the MMX mission in the time period 2024 to 2028. The model predicts traverses of 12 cometary meteoroid streams with fluxes of 100μm and bigger particles of at least 10〈sup〉-3〈/sup〉m〈sup〉-2〈/sup〉day〈sup〉-1〈/sup〉 during a total time period of approximately 90 days. The highest flux of 0.15m〈sup〉-2〈/sup〉day〈sup〉-1〈/sup〉 is predicted for comet 114P/Wiseman-Skiff in October 2026. With its large detection area and high sensitivity CMDM will be able to detect cometary meteoroid streams en route to Phobos. Our simulation results for the Mars orbital phase of MMX also predict the occurrence of meteor showers in the Martian atmosphere which may be observable from the Martian surface with cameras on board landers or rovers. Finally, the IMEX model can be used to study the impact hazards imposed by meteoroid impacts onto large-area spacecraft structures that will be particularly necessary for crewed deep space missions.

    Notes: Maltooligosyl trehalose synthase, one of the two enzymes in the coupled trehalose biosynthesis system in Sulfolobus acidocaldarius, has been purified and crystallized. The chemical modification of this enzyme by reductive methylation of lysine residues significantly improved the crystal quality for X-ray diffraction experiments. The crystals of the modified enzyme belong to orthorhombic space group P212121, with unit-cell parameters a = 56.70, b = 140.1, c = 205.2 Å measured at cryo-temperature, and are found to contain two enzyme molecules per asymmetric unit.

    Notes: Electrons or positrons were stored in the electron storage ring of the Photon Factory (PF). The vacuum of the PF was so good that differences in the instantaneous beam lifetimes between electron and positron storage modes were very slight. Abnormal decrements of the stored beam current observed in the electron storage mode did not appear in the positron storage mode. Thus, the decay curves of the beam current in the positron storage mode were smoother than those in the electron storage mode. Though the instantaneous beam lifetime was nearly the same in storage modes, the practical beam lifetime of a positron was about 10% longer than that of an electron.

    Notes: A three-month operation with a beam is scheduled for the autumn of 1995 at the TRISTAN MR for the sake of light-source development and research programs using it. The lattice will be modified so as to enable the installation of an undulator 5.4 m long and achieve a very low-emittance beam of 5 nm at 10 GeV. The emittance damping wigglers will enhance the radiation-damping rate, which will stabilize the coherent beam instabilities as well as reduce the emittance more. A considerable number of accelerating cavities will be removed from the ring in order to minimize the impedance of the higher-order modes of the cavities that may cause coupled-bunch instabilities and limit the intensity of the stored beam. For the stability of the light beam, a local feedback system will be applied to the electron orbit in the MR. The beam emittance will be measured by detecting the angular distribution of the Compton scattering of laser photons from the beam electrons. To measure the beam emittance in an independent way, visible synchrotron light from a bending magnet and 100 keV x rays from an undulator will be utilized. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: After endoprosthetic replacement of the femoral head, marked pathologic changes of the acetabulum, such as penetration and ulceration, often occur. These changes are caused by the rigid material surface properties of the prosthesis and the lack of damping effects. In this study, we compared the time-dependent changes of tibial articular surfaces with three kinds of femoral implant under loading conditions in dogs. Marked pathologic changes of the menisci and tibial articular cartilage were observed from 8 weeks after implantation with hard material implants, whereas the tibial joint surface against an artificial articular cartilage was still intact 24 weeks postoperatively. These results showed clearly that marked pathologic changes of the articular cartilage against rigid materials occurred and were caused by the surface properties of the counterfaces and high friction coefficients of ceramic and metal materials used. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
