Notes: Abstract —Volcanic ocean islands are prone to structural failure of the edifice that result in landslides that can generate destructive tsunamis. These island landslides range enormously in size, varying from small rock falls to giant sector failures involving tens of cubic kilometers of debris. A survey of literature has allowed us to identify twenty-three processes that contribute to edifice collapse. These have been divided into endogenetic and exogenetic sources of edifice failure. Endogenetic sources of instability and failure include unstable foundations, volcanic intrusions, thermal alteration, edifice pore pressures, unbuttressed structures, and buried faults. Exogenetic sources of instability and failure include collapse of subaerial or submarine deposits, endo-upwelling, karst megaporosity, fractures, oversteepening, overloading, sea-level change, marine erosion, weathering including hurricanes, glacial response, volcanic activity, regional uplift or subsidence, tectonic seismicity and anthropogenic agents. While the endogenetic sources dominate during periods of active volcanism and cone building, the exogenetic sources may cause failure at any time. Tsunamis, both small and large, are associated with these edifice failures.

Notes: Abstract  As the regions around active volcanoes succumb to large increases in population, particularly in the developing world where most of the high-risk volcanoes are located, the threat posed by eruptions becomes increasingly serious. Improvements in eruption forecasting are critical to combat this situation, for reducing injury and loss of life, and for minimizing the detrimental effects to local economies and to the fabric of society. Better-constrained forecasts are strongly dependent on geophysical and other data gathered during a program of volcano surveillance, and we reveal how, if interpreted in terms of static rock fracturing, analysis of changes in volcanic seismicity and ground deformation may be used to forecast more accurately the onset of eruptive activity. As illustrated by recent events at several volcanoes, studies of previous activity, increased levels of monitoring, and improved training of scientists are also all crucial to improving forecasts of impending eruptions.

Description: The predominantly constructive life cycles of large, long-lived, stratovolcanoes and basaltic shields are punctuated by transitory episodes during which large volumes of material are divested from the flanks. Such shedding typically takes place catastrophically in the form of a lateral collapse, generating a debris avalanche and leaving a scar that may attain caldera dimensions. Collapse may follow instability development arising from a single, discrete, event, such as a crypto-dome intrusion, or may be the end-product of progressive destabilization over a long period of time. Lateral collapses may also occur at persistent slumps, which may have been active over periods as long as 104-105 a prior to catastrophic failure. Collapse velocities may exceed 40 m s-1, leading to completion of the process within a few hundreds of seconds. Collapse volumes span several orders of magnitude, ranging from less than 1 km3 to more than 10 km3 at many continental and subduction-zone volcanoes, to 1000 km3 or more at the great basalt shields of Hawaii. Lateral collapse may be accompanied by a wide range of associated hazards, including atmospheric shock wave, pyroclastic flows and surges, extensive tephra fall, and secondary lahars. For volcanoes in the marine environment, potentially destructive and lethal tsunamis can be added to the inventory. Here, the potential for a lateral collapse at an ocean island volcano to generate a mega-tsunami' (more than 100 m high at source and destructive at oceanic distances) is discussed and evaluated.
