    Description / Table of Contents: The superposition of stratified rocks is an unmistakable manifestation of the history of sedimentary processes through deep time. However, the relationship between the preserved strata of the rock record and the passage of geological time, indisputable in principle, is unknowable in detail; incompleteness is an essential property of the record. That gaps exist at all scales in sedimentary successions is easily demonstrated from consideration of sediment accumulation rates, and expectations of continuity and completeness at any scale are correspondingly inadvisable. Locating and quantifying the gaps in the record is, however, very much less straightforward. Predictive modelling of strata – essential for their practical exploitation – requires such geohistorical understanding, yet over-simplified assumptions about how time is represented in rock can still lead to inadequate or even false conclusions. The contributions to this volume describe a range of practical studies, theoretical investigations, and numerical experiments in which the nature of the strata–time relationship is explored.

    Notes: Abstract. Variously timed sub-optimal irrigation strategies were applied to sugarbeet grown on a light soil (loamy sand or sandy loam) over four seasons (1991 to 1994) to investigate the effect on crop growth and nitrate leaching risk. Data from the two dry seasons, (1991 and 1994) are reported here. In the driest year (1991) soil mineral N levels after autumn harvest were negatively related to crop water use (P 〈 0.05). In this season, there was little drainage from the soil profile, and full irrigation reduced residual soil N by 31 kg N/ha (0-90 cm) compared with the unirrigated treatment (79 kg N/ha). The potential for N leaching during the ensuing winter was consequently more than halved. In 1991 and 1994 there was a strong positive linear relationship between dry matter yield, N uptake and water use, but a negative relationship between plant N concentration and water use. These relationships were a function of the severity and not the timing of drought. The additional N uptake associated with increased irrigation and crop water use was biased towards a large concentration in the aboveground crop (tops), which are normally returned to the soil. The C:N ratio of sugarbeet tops was affected by crop water supply with droughted crops having lower values. This would also influence N release and subsequent leaching risk. However, the effects of drought on N leaching risk were relatively small when compared with other root crops such as potatoes.

    Notes: Calcareous siltstone beds in the sub-littoral marine sedimentary rocks of the highest Ludlovian (Upper Whitcliffian) in south Radnorshire display symmetrical ripples with wave lengths around 30 cm. These structures are interpreted as having been formed by the deposition of calcareous silt layers in conformity with bottom surfaces previously scoured into a pattern of symmetrical, gently-rounded, crests and troughs; hence, they are termed scour ripples. There is some evidence of a longitudinal relationship between the scour ripples and the scouring and depositing currents involved in their formation.

    Notes: A new hybrid structure for two-dimensional surface-emitting diode laser arrays has been demonstrated. Each hybrid array consists of linear arrays of GaAs/AlGaAs lasers, with conventional cleaved end facets, that are mounted in grooves etched in a Si substrate. The etched grooves have flat bottoms and 45° sidewalls that are coated with a highly reflecting Cr/Au layer. A hybrid array with three 4-mm-wide GaAs/AlGaAs linear laser arrays has been fabricated and tested. Approximately 10 W of peak power perpendicular to the array surface was obtained from each of the linear arrays for 11–12 A of pulsed current per array. The measured differential quantum efficiencies were 65–70%, indicating that the 45° metallized sidewalls deflect by 90° essentially all of the light emitted from the laser facets. The new approach allows for the use of integral Si heat sinks and should prove useful for fabricating large, high-power, two-dimensional laser arrays in any material system.

    Notes: Monolithic two-dimensional arrays with light emission normal to the surface have been obtained by fabricating edge-emitting quantum well GaAs/AlGaAs lasers with deflecting mirrors adjacent to both laser facets. The facets and mirrors were formed by ion beam assisted etching. Proton bombardment between adjoining lasers was used to prevent lasing in the transverse direction. At the highest pulsed current used in these experiments, 10.5 A, the power output of a 22-element array was 1.6 W, which corresponds to a power density of 160 W cm−2. At this level, the power output was still linear with current.

    Notes: Monolithic two-dimensional surface-emitting arrays of strained-layer InGaAs/AlGaAs and AlInGaAs/AlGaAs diode lasers have been fabricated and operated pulsed with low-threshold current densities and differential quantum efficiencies greater than 50%. The InGaAs/AlGaAs arrays emit at 1.03 μm, while the AlInGaAs/AlGaAs arrays emit at 0.815 μm. Thus, it should be possible to fabricate monolithic arrays with comparable performance over a wide wavelength range. The individual lasers of the arrays are horizontal folded-cavity devices with two 45° internal reflectors and two top-surface facets. The design is simple to implement using optical pattern-generator masks, optical projection printing, and chlorine ion-beam-assisted etching in key fabrication steps.

    Notes: Monolithic arrays of surface-emitting AlGaAs diode lasers with dry-etched vertical facets and external parabolic deflecting mirrors have been operated with both short and quasi-cw current pulses. The arrays emit at 804 nm with threshold current densities as low as 220 A/cm2 and differential quantum efficiencies as high as 66%. The vertical facets and parabolic deflecting mirrors were formed by using chlorine ion-beam-assisted etching with standard photolithography.

    Notes: This paper presents a quantitative analysis of irrigation requirements in different climatic areas of England and Wales. The analysis takes account of the differing requirements of various crops and variation in soil texture. The results include an estimation of irrigation requirement in an average year, a typical dry year for irrigation planning purposes, and an exceptional year such as 1976. The analysis was conducted using a computer programme developed jointly by the Agricultural Development and Advisory Service of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, together with the Meteorological Office, and a brief description is given of the salient features of the programme.
