Notizen: The residual impurities in Hg0.8Cd0.2Te crystal have been investigated by using secondary-ion mass spectrometry. It was observed that the impurities are richer in near-surface layer than bulk material. This phenomenon was proved to be related to defect gettering by surface damage. In addition, the measurements of Hall effect and infrared spectra in gettered and ungettered Hg0.8Cd0.2Te wafers have been performed. It was found that the electrical properties of gettered Hg0.8Cd0.2Te wafers were superior to ungettered wafers. The absorption edges moved towards shorter wavelengths and the average transmittance increased in gettered wafers. These can probably be explained by assuming the residual impurity concentration in gettered wafers is relatively low. The results indicate that the defect gettering technique can be used to effectively reduce residual impurities in Hg0.8Cd0.2Te wafers.

Notizen: The optical absorption edges in gettered and ungettered Hg0.8Cd0.2Te alloys have been investigated. It is found that the absorption edge was moved to the short wave direction after the sample was gettered. The change of absorption edge has also been found in Hg0.8Cd0.2Te containing different mercury concentrations. Possible explanations for the phenomena are discussed.

Notizen: The next generation Web Intelligence (WI) aims at enabling users to go beyond the existing online information search and knowledge queries functionalities and to gain, from the Web, practical wisdom for problem solving. To support such a Wisdom Web, we envision that a grid-like computing infrastructure with intelligent service agencies is needed, where these agencies can interact, self-organize, learn, and evolve their course of actions, identities, and interrelationships for new knowledge creation, as well as scientific and social evolution. In this paper, we first provide an overview of recent development in WI and Semantic/Knowledge Grid. Then, the fundamental capabilities of the Wisdom Web as well as the conceptual architecture of an intelligent Grid for supporting it are described. Technical challenges for realizing Grid Intelligence are highlighted and the recent advancements in related research areas are reviewed.

Notizen: Abstract This paper is concerned with general nonlinear nonconvex bilevel programming problems (BLPP). We derive necessary and sufficient conditions at a local solution and investigate the stability and sensitivity analysis at a local solution in the BLPP. We then explore an approach in which a bundle method is used in the upper-level problem with subgradient information from the lower-level problem. Two algorithms are proposed to solve the general nonlinear BLPP and are shown to converge to regular points of the BLPP under appropriate conditions. The theoretical analysis conducted in this paper seems to indicate that a sensitivity-based approach is rather promising for solving general nonlinear BLPP.

Notizen: Abstract This paper describes a method for qualitatively representing and reasoning about spatial configurations ofplanar mechanisms. The method has direct relevance to, and implications for,computer-aided mechanism design androbotics. In particular, it can be used to solve spatial configuration problems where exact geometric knowledge is not available, and to provide guidance for the application of quantitative configuration modeling and planning methods. In this paper, two applications of this method are demonstrated. The first application is concerned with inferring the instantaneous configurations and coupler curves inone-degree-of-freedom planar linkages. The second application deals with planning collision-free paths foropen-chain planar mechanisms moving among static obstacles.

Notizen: Abstract We study notions of nondegeneracy and several levels of increasing degeneracy from the perspective of the local behavior of a local solution of a nonlinear program when problem parameters are slightly perturbed. Ideal nondegeneracy at a local minimizer is taken to mean satisfaction of second order sufficient conditions, linear independence and strict complimentary slackness. Following a brief exploration of the relationship of these conditions with the classical definition of nondegeneracy in linear programming, we recall a number of optimality and regularity conditions used to attempt to resolve degeneracy and survey results of Fiacco, McCormick, Robinson, Kojima, Gauvin and Janin, Shapiro, Kyparisis and Liu. This overview may be viewed as a structured survey of sensitivity and stability results: the focus is on progressive levels of degeneracy. We note connections of nondegeneracy with the convergence of algorithms and observe the striking parallel between the effects of nondegeneracy and degeneracy on optimality conditions, stability analysis and algorithmic convergence behavior. Although our orientation here is primarily interpretive and noncritical, we conclude that more effort is needed to unify optimality, stability and convergence theory and more results are needed in all three areas for radically degenerate problems.

Notizen: Automated assembly planning in a manufacturing environment requires not only mathematically sound formal methods and algorithmic computations but also heuristic knowledge. Much of this knowledge can be extracted from manual task manipulation strategies, such as the motion classification scheme used in methods-time measurement (MTM) studies. In this paper, we delineate various task-level operations in the context of robotic assembly, and show how these operations can be organized in the form of a task grammar. The proposed task grammar captures the intrinsic principle on how the sequence of robot operations should be ordered and how one high-level operation can be effectively decomposed into low-level operations. In order to control the process of robot task decomposition, we explicitly represent and apply qualitative heuristic knowledge about task constraints and operation applicability. In the paper, we first describe how syntactical knowledge about robot operations can be formulated for assembly-related manipulation tasks. Next, through illustrative examples, we attempt to show how qualitative knowledge can be effectively used in the task decomposition in three distinct ways: heuristic-based operation pattern matching, spatial-feature-based qualitative state envisionment, and canonical transformation of task environments.

Notizen: Abstract The application of user-expertise modeling for adaptive interfaces is confronted with a number of difficult challenges, namely, efficiency and reliability, the cost-benefit ratio, and the practical usability of user modeling techniques. We argue that many of these obstacles can be overcome by standard, automatic means of performing knowledge assessment. Within this perspective, we present the basis of a probabilistic user modeling approach, the POKS technique, which could serve as a standard user-expertise modeling tool. The POKS technique is based on the cognitive theory of knowledge structures: a formalism for the representation of the order in which we learn knowledge units (KU). The technique permits the induction of knowledge structures from a small number of empirical data cases. It uses an evidence propagation scheme within these structures to infer an individual's knowledge state from a sample of KU. The empirical induction technique is based, in part, on statistical hypothesis testing over conditional probabilities that are determined by the KUs' learning order. Experiments with this approach show that the technique is successful in partially inferring an individual's knowledge state, either through the monitoring of a user's behavior, or through a selective questioning process. However, the selective process, based on entropy minimization, is shown to be much more effective in reducing the standard error score of knowledge assessment than random sampling.
