Description / Table of Contents:
Notes:
Summary Nowadays air pollution and the use of building materials like concrete, endanger mural paintings. Therefore their technological examinations become more and more important. Analytical methods for the determination of pigments, binding media, painting technique and sources of damages like salt efflorescence are discussed. A critical evaluation of analytical results shows, that even correct results can lead to wrong conclusions concerning painting technique or causes of damages. The interdisciplinary collaboration between art historians, archeologists and scientists is emphasized.
