Description / Table of Contents: Introduction -- Environmental background investigation of groundwater contamination sites -- Rating and evaluation of pollution source intensity for typical groundwater contamination sites -- Risk assessment of groundwater contamination sites -- Application case.
Abstract: This book introduces readers to environmental background investigation, pollution source intensity evaluation and risk assessment approaches used at three main types of groundwater-contaminated sites: municipal domestic waste landfills, hazardous waste landfills and oil-contaminated sites. In addition, typical contaminated sites throughout China are examined to demonstrate how these approaches can be applied for their investigation, assessment and restoration. By reading this book, readers will gain a deeper understanding of the restoration and management of typical groundwater-contaminated sites.

Abstract: This book introduces planning support systems by combining policy decision-making process with the mechanism of urban spatial or functional development regarding to the planning policies on strategic level. By analyzing policy interactions between household agents, the book concentrates on visualizing and forecasting macro phenomenon of policy effects through revealing the discrete, micro human behaviors around the urban functions of dwelling, recreation, working, and transportation. Simulations are created based on these policy outcome assessments, taking into account the influences of energy and resource consumption and CO2 emission on sustainable development in urban environments. The book is geared towards researchers, universities, and urban policy makers. The book begins by presenting a framework of urban growth simulation, and introducing Spatial Strategic Planning Support System (SSP-SS). Then, household lifecycle and relocation models are employed for simulating policy impacts on urbanization, and investigating the impacts of spatial strategic planning. Several projects are assessed using agent-based modeling including shopping centre construction, day-care service for aging populations, and developing of "bus city" for reducing transportation CO2 emission. The final chapter identifies the key planning factors that play effective roles on reducing carbon emission in urban master plan by simulating the carbon emission volume in urban area.

Notes: The Wilton ripples phenomenon with a background current is examined in detail. The case of most interest occurs when the current is near the threshold value such that direct resonance occurs for the Wilton ripples. Interaction between the fundamental mode and its second harmonic occurs on a much faster time scale. Bifurcation diagrams and stability analysis are presented.

Notes: The bradyzoite stage of the Apicomplexan protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii plays a critical role in maintenance of latent infection. We reported previously the cloning of a bradyzoite-specific gene BAG1/hsp30 (previously referred to as BAG5 ) encoding a cytoplasmic antigen related to small heat shock proteins. We have now disrupted BAG1 in the T. gondii PLK strain by homologous recombination. H7, a cloned null mutant, and Y8, a control positive for both cat and BAG1, were chosen for further characterization. Immunofluorescence and Western blot analysis of bradyzoites with BAG1 antisera demonstrated expression of BAG1 in the Y8 and the PLK strain but no expression in H7. All three strains expressed a 116 kDa bradyzoite cyst wall antigen, a 29 kDa matrix antigen and the 65 kDa matrix reactive antigen MAG1. Mice inoculated with H7 parasites formed significantly fewer cysts than those inoculated with the Y8 and the PLK strains. H7 parasites were complemented with BAG1 using phleomycin selection. Cyst formation in vivo for the BAG1-complemented H7 parasites was similar to wild-type parasites. We therefore conclude that BAG1 is not essential for cyst formation, but facilitates formation of cysts in vivo.

Notes: The effects of different solid solution and aging technologies on the microstructure ofAM50 were studied. The results indicated that heat-resistant Al-Mn phases were the major secondphases in AM50 alloy under all testing conditions. Highest microhardnesses were obtained not only inas-aged sample but in as-solution treated sample, which indicated that the strengthening mechanismfor AM50 alloy was not limited to precipitation reinforcement

Notes: In the present paper, nine kinds of alloys with different contents of zinc and zirconium werecast and the influence of zinc and zirconium individually and jointly on the microstructure of the ZKalloys were investigated. The results indicated that the shape and amount of the eutectic were closelyrelated to the content of Zn. With the increase of Zn content, the eutectic was prone to havefish-bone-like shape. When the eutectic grew up to contact with each other, then network eutecticformed; Zr could intensively refine not only the grain size but also the eutectic, but when Zr〉0.6%,compound containing Zr or pure Zr granules would appear. That the increase of the Zn must go withthe increase of the Zr proved the combined influence of the two alloy elements

Notes: Morphologies of precipitation phases along grain boundaries of the as-cast Mg-6.0Zn-0.45Zr, Mg-6.0Zn-1.2Y and Mg-6.0Zn-0.6Zr-1.0Y alloys were investigated. The experimental results indicated that the main precipitation phase along grain boundary of the as-cast Mg-6.0Zn-0.45Zr was a Mg-Zn binary compound. There were two kinds of precipitation phases along grain boundaries for Mg-6.0Zn-1.2Y and Mg-6.0Zn-0.6Zr-1.0Y alloys. One grew at triangular grain boundary, which was fish-bone -like in shape and a Mg-Zn binary compound. The other distributed mainly around the grain, which was net-like in shape and a Mg-Zn-Y ternary compound. In addition, there were lots of granular phases, extending to the interior of the grain, at the rim of grain boundary phases. Y was found to affect obviously morphology of precipitation phases along grain boundary of the as-cast Mg-Zn-Zr (ZK60) alloys

Notes: Fe-sheathed MgB2 tapes were prepared by the in situ powder-in-tube (PIT) techniqueusing nanoscale Si/N/C and SiC whisker as doping materials, respectively. It is found that the dopedtapes exhibited superior field performance and higher critical current (JC) values than the undopedtapes in the magnetic field up to 12 T. Moreover, the improvement of JC for the SiC whisker dopedsamples was more significantly than that in Si/N/C doped tapes, while flux pinning abilityenhancements were similar. It is proposed that the difference of impurity content in MgB2 matrix, which affects the grain connectivity, is responsible for JC value difference between Si/N/C and SiCwhisker doped samples

Notes: In this paper, an intelligent modeling method, which is based on the Tree-Structured fuzzyinference system, is proposed for building a fuzzy dynamic model of a giant magnetostrictiveactuator. In this new method, a series-parallel frame is introduced to transform the multi-valuedmapping of the hysteresis into a one-to-one mapping so that the fuzzy technique can be used toapproximate the characteristic of the hysteresis. The proposed model has a simple architecture, whichis of low computational load and can adapt to different operating conditions. Compared thecalculating results with the experimental ones, it is found that the fuzzy dynamic model is able to wellreproduce the dynamic behavior of the giant magnetostrictive actuator across a wide frequency band(below 30Hz)

Notes: Alloy phases in the as-aged (T6) ZK60 magnesium alloy were investigated. More attentions were paid to types and morphologies of main alloy phases in the as-aged ZK60 magnesium alloy. The experimental results indicated that there was an abundant flower-shaped segregation in the solution-treated ZK60 magnesium alloy. A small quantity of undissolved compounds, MgZn2, was also found. They distributed irregularly in the form of similar parallelogram, with a dimension of 200nm~500nm and not sensitive to heat-treatment. Mg2Zn3 was found to be a main secondary compound in the as-aged ZK60 alloy, which precipitated during aging. Another precipitation phase, MgZn, in the as-aged ZK60 magnesium alloy was alsofound in the form of long and thin rods with a dimension of 500nm
