    Beschreibung: Investigating the relationship between factors (climate change, atmospheric CO2 concentrations enrichment, and vegetation structure) and hydrological processes is important for understanding and predicting the interaction between the hydrosphere and biosphere. The Integrated Biosphere Simulator (IBIS) was used to evaluate the effects of climate change, rising CO2, and vegetation structure on hydrological processes in China at the end of the 21st century. Seven simulations were implemented using the assemblage of the IPCC climate and CO2 concentration scenarios, SRES A2 and SRES B1. Analysis results suggest that (1) climate change will have increasing effects on runoff evapotranspiration (ET), transpiration (T), and transpiration ratio (transpiration/evapotranspiration, T/E) in most hydrological regions of China except in the southernmost regions; (2) elevated CO2 concentrations will have increasing effects on runoff at the national scale, but at the hydrological region scale, the physiology effects induced by elevated CO2 concentration will depend on the vegetation types, climate conditions, and geographical background information with noticeable decreasing effects shown in the arid Inland region of China; (3) leaf area index (LAI) compensation effect and stomatal closure effect are the dominant factors on runoff in the arid Inland region and southern moist hydrological regions, respectively; (4) the magnitudes of climate change (especially the changing precipitation pattern) effects on the water cycle are much larger than those of the elevated CO2 concentration effects; however, increasing CO2 concentration will be one of the most important modifiers to the water cycle; (5) the water resource condition will be improved in northern China but depressed in southernmost China under the IPCC climate change scenarios, SRES A2 and SRES B1.

    Notizen: The propagation of quantum/classical molecular dynamics equations is investigated from two different points of view. One is to take into account the time-dependence of effective Hamiltonians of quantum and classical subsystems by the combination of Zhu and Zhao's time-independentlike split operator method [J. Chem. Phys. 105, 9536 (1996)] and a predictor-corrector technique. The other one is to introduce a time-independent quasi-Hamiltonian operator for the total system based on which new split-operator propagators are constructed. High-order quantum wave-packet propagators and the multiple time scale technique can be easily employed in our algorithms. Four new quantum/classical propagators are proposed and tested in a simple model system. It is found that combinations of our algorithms with high-order quantum propagators or the multiple time scale technique can give good results even with very large time steps. These new schemes will be particularly powerful in the case when the propagation of the classical subsystem is most time-consuming. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: YFe10−xCoxSi2 (0≤x≤10) compounds were synthesized and studied by x-ray and neutron diffraction. The ThMn12-type structure can be formed in the entire range of composition. Magnetic properties were studied at fields up to 70 kOe in the temperature range of 1.5 K to room temperature. X-ray-diffraction analyses of aligned powders indicate that the easy magnetization direction is parallel to the c axis when x≤6, and deviates from the c axis when x≥ (R18)8. The site preference of Si and Co atoms in the structure was determined by neutron-diffraction experiments.

    Notizen: Monte Carlo simulations were used to search for the optimal probability estimator for estimating Weibull parameters with the linear regression method. Compared with commonly used probability estimators, the optimal one obtained gives a more accurate estimation of the Weibull modulus and the same estimation precision of the scale parameter. It is also concluded that the maximum likelihood method results in the highest precision, however, less conservative than the linear regression method.

    Notizen: Abstract Over the last three decades considerable evidence has accumulated that CD8+ T cells regulate peripheral immune responses, in part, by specifically controlling the outgrowth of antigen-triggered CD4+ T cells. This regulatory function of CD8+ T cells has been shown, in vivo, to control the emergence of autoreactive CD4+ T cells as well as CD4+ T cells reactive to conventional antigens, including alloantigens. In this review, we summarize the evidence that this immune suppression mediated by CD8+ T cells is dependent, in part, on specific cognate interactions between MHC class I-restricted regulatory CD8+ cells and antigen-activated CD4+ T cells. Moreover, we review the evidence that regulatory CD8+ T cells recognize antigen-activated CD4+ T cells in a TCR specific manner restricted by the MHC class Ib molecule, Qa-1. The Qa-1 molecule may be uniquely qualified to serve this MHC restrictive function because, unlike conventional MHC molecules, it is preferentially and transiently expressed on activated and not resting CD4+ T cells. This may assure that only recently antigen-activated CD4+ T cells expressing Qa-1/TCR peptide complexes will induce regulatory CD8+ T cells and subsequently become susceptible to regulation. Because Qa-1 also binds to self Qdm peptides that trigger NK (CD94/ NKG2) receptors on CD8+ T cells, the machinery for homeostatic regulation of regulatory CD8+ T cells can be envisioned. Finally, we propose a model by which these TCR specific, Qa-1-restricted regulatory CD8+ T cells selectively downregulate antigen-activated T cells expressing TCRs of certain affinities. Ultimately these regulatory CD8+ T cells control the peripheral TCR repertoire during the course of immune responses to both self and foreign antigens.

M. May as a model for competitive interaction. In the symmetric case that r 1 = r 2 and s 1 = s 2, a region of ultimate confinement is found and the dynamics therein are described in some detail. The bifurcations of periodic points of low period are studied, and a cascade of period-doubling bifurcations is indicated. Within the confinement region, a parameter region is determined for the stable Hopf bifurcation of a pair of symmetrically placed period-two points, which imposes a second component of oscillation near the stable cycles. It is suggested that the symmetric competitive model contains much of the dynamical complexity to be expected in any discrete two-dimensional competitive model.
