    Beschreibung: Atmospheric deposition of mercury to remote areas has increased threefold since pre-industrial times. Mercury deposition is particularly pronounced in the Arctic. Following deposition to surface oceans and sea ice, mercury can be converted into methylmercury, a biologically accessible form of the toxin, which biomagnifies along the marine food chain. Mass-independent fractionation of mercury isotopes accompanies the photochemical breakdown of methylmercury to less bioavailable forms in surface waters. Here we examine the isotopic composition of mercury in seabird eggs collected from colonies in the North Pacific Ocean, the Bering Sea and the western Arctic Ocean, to determine geographical variations in methylmercury breakdown at northern latitudes. We find evidence for mass-independent fractionation of mercury isotopes. The degree of mass-independent fractionation declines with latitude. Foraging behaviour and geographic variations in mercury sources and solar radiation fluxes were unable to explain the latitudinal gradient. However, mass-independent fractionation was negatively correlated with sea-ice cover. We conclude that sea-ice cover impedes the photochemical breakdown of methylmercury in surface waters, and suggest that further loss of Arctic sea ice this century will accelerate sunlight-induced breakdown of methylmercury in northern surface waters.

    Notizen: In a previous article, we proved and characterized a phase transition of an order-disorder type, below room temperature, in the Pb1−3X/2LaX(D'Alembertian)X/2(Zr0.95Ti0.05)O3 (X=0.5–4 wt % La) ceramics. In the present article, the analysis of this order-disorder transition is continued on the basis of the comparative study of Raman scattering, as a function of the Nb or La dopant. The parallel analysis and the interpretation of the Raman spectra of the nondoped, Nb-doped, and La-doped Pb(Zr0.95Ti0.05)O3 ceramics lead to new information concerning the identification of the vibrational modes involved. In addition, the correlation between the phase transitions and the nature of the dopants is established. New information concerning the cell doubling, during the ferroelectric low temperature to ferroelectric high temperature phase transition, is obtained as well. The Raman study of the lead-lanthanum zirconate-titanate ceramics allowed us to identify for the first time the so-called "antiferroelectric mode'' and "ferroelectric mode'' which had been theoretically predicted. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: Erbium photoluminescence at room temperature and at 77 K has been observed from porous silicon doped with erbium from a spin-on silica gel film. Erbium incorporation into silicon dioxide at the surface of porous silicon and rapid thermal processing at temperatures higher than 1223 K were found to be a necessary prerequisite for erbium-related luminescence in porous silicon. No erbium diffusion into monocrystalline silicon from the spin-on films was observed. The depth-dependent erbium concentration in the bulk of porous silicon was determined by secondary-neutral- and secondary-ion-mass spectrometry depth profiling. The laterally resolved erbium distribution in the porous silicon was derived from energy-dispersive x-ray analysis. Possible mechanisms of erbium-related luminescence in porous silicon are discussed. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: The general characteristics and spectrometric features of a high resolution four-crystal reflection x-ray monochromator with wavelength analysis installed at the HASYLAB beam line L at DESY are presented. The monochromator is part of a spectrometer developed to calibrate x-ray absorption edge spectra in the energy range of 6–36 keV with a relative uncertainty ΔE/E from 10−5 to 10−6. This requires an extremely effective suppression of harmonics and also a negligible instrumental influence in order to obtain almost intrinsic spectra. As the results show, the monochromator fulfills the requirements, including very high stability. An example of the calibration procedure for the copper K edge is given as well as a comparison of the remeasured absorption edge energies with the previously tabulated data. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notizen: A translation stage is described which allows rectilinear displacements of up to 200 μm with a load of 20 N. Lateral deviations from the rectilinear movement do not exceed a few nanometers. Tilts are reduced to a few nanoradians. By means of a piezoelectric drive, slow continuous motion with vibration amplitudes below 0.1 nm is achieved. Residual tilting errors due to machining tolerances and nonideal coupling of the drive are reduced to nrad levels by magnetic compensation elements which are remote controlled.

    Notizen: We report the signal saturation behavior of an erbium-doped fiber amplifier pumped at 975 nm. We have characterized the output saturation powers as a function of fiber length and observed that the output saturation powers peak at an optimum length close to the optimum length for small signal gain. The output saturation power is found to be higher at a signal wavelength of 1.555 μm than at 1.532 μm.

    Notizen: MeV erbium implantation doping of 10-μm-thick silica glass films on a Si substrate is studied with the aim of incorporating the rare-earth dopant on an optically active site in the silica network. As-implanted samples (3.5 MeV, 5×1015 Er ions/cm2) show a strong luminescent transition at a wavelength of 1.54 μm, even at room temperature, corresponding to an intra-4f transition of Er3+. Thermal annealing at temperatures up to 900 °C increases the luminescence intensity by a factor of 2 to 3. For temperatures above 1000 °C the intensity decreases drastically as a result of Er precipitation. The lifetime of the excited state is in the order of 10 ms. Photoluminescence studies at 4.2 K are used to identify implantation-induced damage.

    Notizen: Solitons of different wavelengths are found to exhibit substantial spectral and temporal changes when collisions are centered in erbium-doped fiber amplifiers. By using two soliton pulse trains, with ∼70-ps-wide pulses, spectrally separated by 1.8 A(ring), and 106 km of non-dispersion-shifted fiber, we observe a spectral and temporal shift of as much as 0.35 A(ring) and 55 ps, respectively, for each soliton. Both soliton wavelengths shift the same amount, but in opposite directions and remain undisturbed in terms of shape and amplitude after the collision. This shift may impose limitations on multiple wavelength soliton based communication systems utilizing fiber amplifiers.

    Notizen: We report the measurement of intervalley scattering rates for optically excited carriers in GaAs. The measurements were performed using optical pulses of 6 fs duration and an energy distribution centered at 2.0 eV. The average rates for Γ→X and Γ→L intervalley scattering were separately estimated by varying the sample temperature.
