    Notes: The annealing characteristics of Knoop-indented silica and soda–lime–silica glasses were investigated. These glasses were indented using a Knoop indenter in water, and they were annealed at various temperatures below the glass transition temperature. The major diagonal length of the Knoop indentation was measured before and after annealing, and the change of the diagonal length was determined. The change of diagonal length in silica glass was much larger than that in soda–lime–silica glass. This was attributed to the occurrence of more densification around the Knoop indentation in the silica glass. The activation energy of the shrinkage of the Knoop indentation in the silica glass, estimated from the temperature dependence of the relaxation time, was 46 kJ/mol, which was much less than that of viscous flow in silica glass. This suggested that the shrinkage of the Knoop indentation was caused by the structural relaxation of densified glass around the Knoop indentation.

    Notes: Subcritical crack growth in glass shows three characteristic regions, depending on crack velocity. Among three regions, in region III, where water does not affect crack-growth behavior, the slope of the crack-growth curve can be correlated with the intrinsic nature of glass fracture. In this study, to measure the crack velocity in region III, a periodic stress wave was applied to produce fracture-surface markings in the double-cleavage-drilled compression specimen. The crack-growth data obtained were compared with results obtained via direct observation of the crack front. As a result, this method, by using stress-wave fractography, was found to be effective to obtain the crack-growth curve in region III.

    Notes: Phase separation in a sol–gel process of SiO2–ZrO2 in the presence of polyethylene oxide is investigated. An amorphous gel with interconnected macroporous morphology is obtained when phase separation and sol–gel transition concur to fix a transitional structure of spinodal decomposition. Macropore size, together with connectivity of the pores and gel skeleton, can be controlled precisely by selecting an appropriate starting composition for preparation at a zirconium content ≤11.7 mol%. The macroporous gel retains additional mesopores 〈4 nm and exhibits typical bimodal pore size distribution. The addition of ZrO2 in SiO2 improves the thermal stability of both macroporous and mesoporous structures.

    Notes: Borate glasses containing 0.99–30.0 mol% EuO have been prepared under a reducing atmosphere and 151Eu Mössbauer effect measurements have been carried out at room temperature in order to examine the chemical state of Eu2+ ions in these glasses. Mössbauer spectra indicate that most of the europium ions are present as the divalent oxidation state. In dilute Eu2+-containing borate glasses, spectra are split due to paramagnetic hyperfine interactions in the glasses with low and high sodium contents. In concentrated Eu2+-containing borate glasses, line broadening results from the contribution of quadrupole splitting due to asymmetrical oxygen coordination around Eu2+ and the contribution of inhomogeneous broadening due to site-to-site variation. The compositional dependence of isomer shift and quadrupole interaction parameter can be related to the structural changes in the borate glass. The variation of the isomer shift has a good correlation with the optical basicity of glass, and the trend can be explained in terms of the covalent admixture with 6s character. The Eu-O bond in the borate glasses is more ionic than that in EuTiO3 and EuZrO3, where the oxygen coordination number for Eu2+ is 12. The average coordination number for Eu2+ is found to be 12 in all of the present glasses.

    Notes: Macroporous titania (TiO2) films have been prepared via a sol-gel dip-coating method from a titanium tetraisopropoxide solution that contains poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG). The macroporous morphology-i.e., the size, distribution, and shape of the macropores-is controlled by varying the content and molecular weight of PEG, the withdrawal speed, and the temperature of the dipping solution. The morphology of the TiO2 film is determined by competitive contributions of the following factors: (i) decrease in fluidity, because of the evaporation of solvent; (ii) network formation by polycondensation reactions; and (iii) domain formation during phase separation into gel phases and solvent phases.

    Notes: Second-harmonic generation has been observed in poled 10Li2O10Na2O80TeO2 glass. The effect of poling temperature on the second-harmonic intensity has been examined. The second-harmonic intensity increases, attains a maximum, and then decreases as the poling temperature increases. In other words, an optimum poling temperature that results in a maximum second-harmonic intensity exists. The optimum poling temperature linearly increases as the glass-transition temperature increases for several types of tellurite glasses, including the present 10Li2O10Na2O80TeO2 glass. This fact suggests that the process to create a polarization that results in the second-harmonic generation is affected by the structural relaxation at the glass-transition range. The thermal stability of 10Li2O10Na2O80TeO2 glass is higher than that of 18Na2O82TeO2 (30NaO1/270TeO2) glass, as revealed via differential scanning calorimetry. As a result, the temperature range within which the poling is effective is wider for the former glass.

    Notes: Abstract Gels with interconnected domain morphologies in the micrometer-range have been prepared in the silica-zirconia system. The domain formation kinetics in the gelling solution have been examined. Growth of an ordered structure on the length scale of micrometers, for which the kinetics are interpreted as spinodal decomposition, was observed by time-resolved light scattering measurements. The remarkable feature of the silica-zirconia system was that a time-dependent decrease of the wavelength of compositional fluctuations was observed. This occurred in the early stage, probably because the fast condensation reaction which was induced by the addition of zirconia, lead to a substantial change in quench depth on a timescale similar to that of the growth of concentration fluctuations. In the following stage, the coarsened domain structure was frozen-in by the sol-gel transition as the permanent morphology.

    Notes: Abstract Domain formation kinetics in gelling alkoxy-derived silica solutions containing polyethylene oxide (PEO) has been investigated. The time-resolved light scattering measurement was performed for the polymerizing solutions which underwent phase separation in the length scale of micrometer. Domain formation processes which resulted in various sizes of inter-connected morphology were examined, focusing mainly on the initial stage. For all the samples, the scattering intensity grew exponentially with time forming a single peak at a fixed wave-number in the first few tens seconds, which is the characteristic of the linearized regime of the spinodal decomposition. An analysis based on the linearized theory proposed by Cahn gave a reasonable description of the kinetic parameter of phase separation induced in various stages of the sol-gel transition.
