    Notes: Abstract  The current systems for classifying human pathogens on the basis of hazard are well developed and their basic criteria are in general agreement one with another. Of more importance, the safety practices based on these classifications have generally been successful. They have enabled extensive research activities, medical practice and industrial production to be conducted on an ever-increasing scale, involving dangerous microorganisms (e.g. in vaccine production and treatment of infected patients) with a very low incidence of adverse effects on the workers involved and the general public. Although the EU has adopted a harmonised list of agents in groups 1–4 there is as yet no complete agreement among member states and individual microbiologists. The purpose of this paper is to present a historical survey and to discuss the current processes for identifying and classifying the hazards posed by the use of microorganisms in research and technology. This is essential in the design of appropriate methods of counteracting potential risks.

    Notes: Abstract The role and source of gibberellins (GAs) involved in the development of parthenocarpic fruits of Pisum sativum L. has been investigated. Gibberellins applied to the leaf adjacent to an emasculated ovary induced parthenocarpic fruit development on intact plants. The application of gibberellic acid (GA3) had to be done within 1 d of anthesis to be fully effective and the response was concentration-dependent. Gibberellin A1 and GA3 worked equally well and GA20 was less efficient. [3H]Gibberellin A1 applied to the leaf accumulated in the ovary and the accumulation was related to the growth response. These experiments show that GA applied to the leaf in high enough concentration is translocated to the ovary. Emasculated ovaries on decapitated pea plants develop without application of growth hormones. When [3H] GA1 was applied to the leaf adjacent to the ovary a substantial amount of radioactivity accumulated in the growing shoot of intact plants. In decapitated plants, however, this radioactivity was mainly found in the ovary. There it caused growth proportional to the accumulation of CA1. Application of LAB 150978, an inhibitor of GA biosynthesis, to decapitated plants inhibited parthenocarpic fruit development and this inhibition was counteracted by the application of GA3 (either to the fruit, or the leaf adjacent to the ovary, or through the lower cut end of the stem). All evidence taken together supports the view that parthenocarpic pea fruit development on topped plants depends on the import of gibberellins or their precursors, probably from the vegetative aerial parts of the plant.

    Notes: Abstract The polypeptide patterns obtained by sodium dodecylsulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of undigested and autodigested extracts from pea (Pisum sativum L.) ovaries at the early stages of development or degeneration have been studied. Development of unpollinated ovaries was stimulated by application of different plant growth regulators (gibberellic acid, 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, and N6-benzyladenine) or by plant topping. Polypeptide bands of similar mobility to ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase (RuBPCase) subunits (16 and 55 kDa) could be detected in all types of autodigested extracts from stimulated ovaries. However these bands were absent in electrophoretic patterns of autodigested extracts from unstimulated ovaries after 3 d post anthesis and in patterns of autodigested mixtures of these extracts with either those from stimulated ovaries or those from unstimulated ovaries before day 3. These observations indicate that a proteolytic activity which promotes the hydrolysis of RuBPCase appears in unstimulated ovaries about 3 d after anthesis. This event coincides with the loss of the capacity of unpollinated ovaries to develop in response to gibberellic acid and with the degeneration of the ovary wall.

    Notes: Abstract CdS polycrystalline films were grown onto glass substrates by chemical bath deposition (CBD) and characterized by spectroellipsometry, X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The X-ray diffraction patterns of the samples showed the presence of a CdS cubic phase (β-CdS) and of Cd2SiO4 as interfacial material. Using electron diffraction it was possible to index the films as cubic CdS. From effective dielectric function measurements and from reported optical data for the dielectric function of cubic CdS crystals, grown by vapour phase epitaxy, it was possible to fit the experimental data to an effective medium approximation, and to deduce the film thickness, the void fraction and the field screening.

    Notes: Abstract Gibberellins A1, A8, A20 and A29 were identified by capillary gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in the pods and seeds from 5-d-old pollinated ovaries of pea (Pisum sativum cv. Alaska). These gibberellins were also identified in 4-d-old non-developing, parthenocarpic and pollinated ovaries. The level of gibberellin A1 within these ovary types was correlated with pod size. Gibberellin A1, applied to emasculated ovaries cultured in vitro, was three to five times more active than gibberellin A20. Using pollinated ovary explants cultured in vitro, the effects of inhibitors of gibberellin biosynthesis on pod growth and seed development were examined. The inhibitors retarded pod growth during the first 7 d after anthesis, and this inhibition was reversed by simultaneous application of gibberellin A3. In contrast, the inhibitors, when supplied to 4-d-old pollinated ovaries for 16 d, had little effect on seed fresh weight although they reduced the levels of endogenous gibberellins A20 and A29 in the enlarging seeds to almost zero. Paclobutrazol, which was one of the inhibitors used, is xylem-mobile and it efficiently reduced the level of seed gibberellins without being taken up into the seed. In intact fruits the pod may therefore be a source of precursors for gibberellin biosynthesis in the seed. Overall, the results indicate that gibberellin A1, present in parthenocarpic and pollinated fruits early in development, regulates pod growth. In contrast the high levels of gibberellins A20 and A29, which accumulate during seed enlargement, appear to be unnecessary for normal seed development or for subsequent germination.

    Notes: Abstract The spin dynamics in the condensed phases of ambient–pressure molecular oxygen (liquid, plastic–crystalline (γ−), magnetically disordered (β−) and fully ordered α−O 2 ) iS investigated by means of the concurrent use of neutron scattering and muon–spin relaxation. Above the α → β transition the magnetic dynamics is governed by fast paramagnetic fluctuations whose spectrum is determined from the S(Q,ω) dynamic structure factors accessible from inelastic neutron scattering. Such information is shown to provide a key to understand the non–trivial temperature dependence of longitudinal relaxation rates found in muon spin relaxation measurements. Recent neutron scattering measurements performed within the magnetically ordered α–phase under high–resolution conditions reveal the presence of a low–energy excitation of magnetic origin, unnoticed in a previous polarized–neutron experiment, which corresponds to the continuation to longer wavevectors of the spin–wave mode detected in antiferromagnetic resonance (AFMR) experiments carried out by optical means.

    Notes: Abstract Neutron powder diffraction and magnetization measurements have been performed in stoichiometric Pr2NiO4+δ(δ≈0), which at room temperature (RT) is orthorhombic (Bmab). Ni2+ becomes three dimensionally (3D) antiferromagnetically ordered atT N ≈325K, with a propagation vectork=[100], and spins oriented along thea axis (parallel to the propagation vector). The magnetic structure belongs to theΓ 7g (−−+)-representation (g x mode, Shubnikov groupB pmab') ofBmab, and a magnetic moment of 1.5μ B is measured at 155K. This compound undergoes two different structural phase transitions. First, going down in temperature, Pr2NiO4 transforms by a first order phase transition from orthorhombic (Bmab) to tetragonal (P42/ncm) atT c1≈115K. At high temperature, we can predict a transformation from orthorhombic (Bmab) to tetragonal (I4/mmm) in a continuous way. The extrapolated temperature for this second structural transition isT c2≈1500±100K. The low temperature structural transformation allows a change in the magnetic structure which forT〈T c1 is better described in the orthorhombic symmetry. Just belowT c1 the magnetic structure is described by the:Γ 3g (−+)-representation ofPccn(gxcyfz mode, Shubnikov groupPc′c′n), this magnetic phase begins to disappear going down in temperature and at the same time a new magnetic phase grows. This new magnetic structure is described by theΓ 1g ofPccn (c xgyaz mode, Shubnikov groupPccn). Both magnetic structures coexist in a certain temperature range. At 1.5 K thec xgyaz mode represents the total of the magnetic ordering. To reproduce the observed magnetic intensities we are forced to consider that Pr3+ is polarized below 40 K, with a magnetic structure which is coupled to the Ni sublattices (i.e.Γ 1g andΓ 3g ). The magnetic moment at low temperature for Pr is about 1.28μ B .

    Notes: Abstract. We examine the interplay between ferromagnetism and superconductivity in La0.3Ca0.7MnO3/YBa2Cu3O7 superlattices showing “coexistence” of magnetism and superconductivity. A depression of the critical temperature is observed when manganite layer thickness is increased between 0.9 and 8 nm, pointing to an interplay between ferromagnetism and superconductivity over nanometer length scales. The possibility of a ferromagnetic/superconducting proximity effect to explain these results is analyzed.

    Notes: Abstract The trapping efficiency of polyurethane foam (PUF) and Amberlite XAD-2 have been investigated for various OCPs. Atmospheres containing different concentrations of 16 OCPs have been generated and trapped in the solid adsorbent cartridges. Conditions such as the adsorption by the cartridges, the extraction of the compounds, the evaporation of the final solution, the breakthrough value and the analysis of the compounds by GC/ECD have been studied. The adsorption efficiency has been better on PUF than on Amberlite XAD-2. Recovery values ranging from 80% for p-p′ TDE to 105% for heptachlor are obtained, most of them being higher than 90%. The relative standard deviation values for the compounds investigated are less than 5% for a total sample amount of 0.2 μg of each compound.
