    Notes: Summary The spermiogenesis of three species of the Parotoplaninae (Otoplanidae, Proseriata) is described based on electron-microscopical observations. Special reference is given to organelles which do not persist in mature male gametes. One of these organelles is a striated appendage of the intercentriolar body. This differentiation has not been reported from any other plathelminth taxa up to now. The striated appendage, which may serve as a strengthening element, is hypothesized to be an autapomorphic feature of the Parotoplaninae.

    Description / Table of Contents: Summary The ultrastructure of intracerebral visual clubs and the fine structure of presumed photoreceptive lamellate bodies from the cerebral region of Parotoplana capitata are described. The rhabdomeric elements of the visual clubs exhibit a tripartite configuration. Some microvilli are mingled with the cilia of the lamellate bodies. The evolutionary aspects of the visual clubs and of the lamellate bodies are discussed. The absence of pigment granules within the mantle cell of the visual clubs form an autapomorphy of the Proseriata Lithophora. Ciliary lamellate bodies represent an autapomorphy of the subordinated taxon Parotoplaninae.
    Notes: Zusammenfassung Die Ultrastruktur der intracerebralen Sehkolben und die der potentiell photoreceptorischen Lamellarkörper aus der Cerebralregion von Parotoplana capitata werden dargestellt. Die Konfiguration der Rhabdomeren der Sehkolben zeigt eine deutliche Terzettbildung. Zwischen die Cilien der Lamellarkörper schieben sich einige Mikrovilli. Die Bedeutung der pigmentfreien Sehkolben und der Lamellarkörper in evolutiver Hinsicht wird diskutiert. Der Mangel von Pigmentgranula in der Mantelzelle der Sehkolben bildet eine Autapomorphie der Proseriata Lithophora. Ciliäre Lamellarkörper repräsentieren vermutlich eine Autapomorphie des Teiltaxons Parotoplaninae.

    Notes: Summary The general organisation of the vitellocytes inParotoplana capitata, P. papii, Parotoplanella progermaria, andP. heterorhabditica is described. Special emphasis is put on the substructure of eggshell-forming granules. In all parotoplanid species studied the eggshell granules show uniformly shaped substructures typical of all the Proseriata and besides this feature, globules exist which are bipartite, i.e. two different patterns exist within the same granule. This characteristic, which is unknown for other taxa of the Proseriata, is hypothesized as an autapomorphy of the monophylum Parotoplaninae.

    Notes: Abstract  Xenoturbella bocki is the only species of the high-ranked taxon Xenoturbellida. The species lives on marine mud bottoms at a depth of 20–120 m and moves extremely slowly by ciliary gliding. Nevertheless it possesses a well-developed body wall musculature with outer circular muscles, a prominent layer of inner longitudinal muscles and radial muscles that extend from the outer circular myocytes to the musculature surrounding the gastrodermis. The longitudinal myocytes are not compact cells, but form fascicles of fibrils running parallel to each other. Fine cytoplasmic cords connect the fibres of a cell to each other and with its nuclear region. The muscles are embedded within a sometimes expansive extracellular matrix (ECM) that lacks any fibrillar components. All muscle cells display conspicuous and numerous cytoplasmic extensions that are intermingled with each other. Tight coupling between adjacent cell membranes is not found, but zonula adhaerens-like junctions exist. Fibrils belonging to different myocytes, but also fibrils of the same cell, are coupled by such cytoplasmic extensions. Circular, radial and at least the peripheral longitudinal myocytes display cell-matrix connections with the internal lamina, a component of the subepidermal ECM. This internal lamina projects down into the centres of the fascicles with longitudinal muscle fibrils and forms extensive attachment zones with the muscle cells, reminiscent of focal contacts. For the ingestion of food, X. bocki opens the simple mouth pore and protrudes the aciliated gastrodermis. The body wall musculature is responsible for this protrusion and also for the withdrawal of the gastrodermis. In the past, possible phylogenetic kinships with the Acoelomorpha (Plathelminthes) or the Enteropneusta and Holothuroidea were discussed, but, on the basis of all information available, X. bocki is hypothesized to be the sister taxon of the Bilateria.

    Notes: Abstract The ‘Schlauchdrüsen’ or paracnids of Coelogynopora axi Sopott, 1972 consist of two components: a muscle cell and a secretory cell. The secretory cell is provided with a tube, which bears a border of microvilli. In the normal position the tube is situated in the interior of the secretory cell, and the microvilli stand at the inner side of the tube. After expulsion of the tube the microvilli are situated at its free surface. The evagination takes place in response to chemical stimuli and is effected by the contraction of the myofibrils of the muscle cell. The paracnids are supposed to be mechanisms of defense. However, conformities with nematocysts and spirocysts of the cnidarians do not exist. The paracnids in other species of the Coelogynoporidae, for example in Invenusta paracnida (Karling, 1966) and Carenscoilia bidentata Sopott, 1972 differ from those of C. axi in many details.

    Notes: Abstract In free-living Plathelminthes, the best-known photoreceptors are pigment-cup ocelli, eyes formed of one or several pigmented supportive cells into whose cup-shaped cavity project the light-sensitive elements of one or several sensory cells. Besides these, so-called Sehkolben, photoreceptors lacking pigment granules, are found in some species. Sensory cells in plathelminth photoreceptors most commonly use microvilli as the light-sensitive organelles, but some use cilia and combinations of microvilli and cilia. Lamellate ciliary bodies with cilia whose membranes are strongly flattened and rolled and pericerebral ciliary aggregations with interwoven cilia protruding into an intracellular cavity are likely photoreceptors in that they show amplification of membrane likely to bear photoreceptive pigments. Cells with ballooned cilia and tubular vacuoles are other differentiations to which light-sensitivity has been attributed. A variety of structures serve as lenses, all usually formed from parts of the pigment cell.

    Notes: Abstract The unpaired eye of A. sacculipenis consists of two sensory cells and one pigmented mantle cell. The light-sensing organelles are formed by flattened and rolled lamellae, which are not of ciliary origin but derive from the surface membrane of the sensory cells. The pigment of the mantle cell appears black in living animals, but electron-lucent in the EM picture. The significance of these special features is discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Fine-structural features of female germ cells differentiating within the germaria of Otoplanella baltica and Notocaryoplanella glandulosa are documented and compared with those of other free-living platyhelminths having ectolecithal eggs. In these species, encompassed in the taxon Proseriata Lithophora, insemination of the germocytes occurs within the germaria. A sperm cell, that has penetrated a germocyte differs in special features from mature male germ cells found in the testes, in parts of the male genital system, or even in other regions of the organism. The hypothesis that dense bodies correspond to acrosomal material is supported.
