    Notes: Abstract In the present paper, coherence studies have been made of two pairs of variables with four different season's series: (a) the unfiltered and filtered Indian temperature anomaly (ITA) and Indian monsoon rainfall series; and (b) the unfiltered and filtered northern hemispheric temperature anomaly (NHTA) and Indian monsoon rainfall series. The significant coherences exist with ITA at confidence levels varying from 95 to 99 percent at cycles of 4.8, 3.0 and 2.4 years in winter, 4.8 and 2.7 years in spring, 6 and 3.4 years in summer and 4 and 2.4 years in the autumn season. Likewise, the coherences with NHTA series at 95 to 99 percent level have been perceived, one at the relatively high frequency of 2 to 2.7 years and the second at the relatively lower frequency of 3 to 8 years during the four seasons. The presence of the above cycles suggests the possible role ofQBO andENSO phenomena.

    Notes: Summary Atmospheric total ozone contents over three stations in north India have been studied. A power spectrum analysis has been made of daily values recoreded at these stations during the winter season. Three types of periodicities have been observed in the available records, namely, oscillations with a period of (a) 2.5–3.5 days, (b) 4.0–5.3 days and (c) 8.0–9.6 days. The first and third type of oscillations were also observed when the data were extended to cover an entire year, instead of the winter season alone. A possible mechanism for the occurrence of these periodicities is discussed.

    Notes: Summary This paper presents an examination of the statistical relationship between summer monsoon rainfall over all India, and two sub-regions (north west India and peninsular India) and the indices of mid-latitude (35° to 70° N) zonal circulation at 500 hPa level, over different sectors of the hemisphere, based on 19 years (1971–1989) data. The results indicate that summer monsoon rainfall (June–September) over India shows; (i) a significant and direct relationship with the strength of the zonal circulation index during concurrent July over the sector 90° E to 160° E. (ii) a significant inverse relationship with the strength of the zonal index during the previous April over the sector 160° E to 45° W and a similar relationship with the whole northern hemisphere and (iii) a significant and direct relationship with the frequency of the zonal index during the previous January over the sector 45° W to 90° E. Significant relationships are also observed between the zonal circulation indices of the above mentioned months and sectors with the 500 hPa ridge location in April at 75° E over India.

    Notes: Summary Zonally averaged surface air temperatures have been analysed to form time series of surface air temperature anomalies over the tropics (TTA), extratropics (ETA), the poles (PTA) and the whole northern hemisphere (NHTA) for the period 1901–1990. The temporal statistical relationships between these temperature time series and Indian monsoon rainfall over all India (AIR), northwest India (NWR) and peninsular India (PIR) have been examined for the above period. The northern hemispheric January–February (JF) temperature correlates significantly and positively with all the three monsoon rainfall series, the regional peninsular rainfall series (PIR) displaying the best correlation. The Strongest correlation is observed during 1951–1980 for both AIR and NWR but weakened in 1961–1990. For PIR, the highest correlation is observed during 1961–1990, remaining almost stable since 1951–1980. The JF series AIR monsoon relationship showed the highest correlation over the tropics during 1901–1940, over the polar region during 1941–1980 and over the northern hemisphere during 1951–1980. AIR and NWR moreover show a significant negative relationship with simultaneous, succeeding autumn and following year TTA series, while AIR and PIR monsoon rainfall series show significant positive association with the following year PTA series. The results also suggest that cooler January–February NHTA not only lead to a poor monsoon, but a poor monsoon also leads to warmer temperatures over the tropics and cooler temperatures over the polar region in the following year.

    Description: Inverse mirror plasma experimental device has been designed and fabricated for detailed experimental investigation of phase mixing and wave breaking of plasma oscillation/wave. The device produces quiescent magnetized plasma over a wide operating range using multifilamentary source with low filament spacing in cusp geometry along with a flexible transition magnetic field region between the plasma source chamber and the main chamber. Argon plasma has been produced in the device over a wide pressure range from 1.7 × 10 −5 mbar to 9 × 10 −4 mbar, achieving plasma densities in the range of ∼10 9 cm −3 –10 12 cm −3 and temperatures in the range of ∼1.7 eV–5 eV. To fulfill a desired prerequisite of having quiescent plasma ( δn / n ≤ 1%) for realizing phase mixing of nonlinear plasma oscillation and other wave experiments, a quiescent magnetized plasma is obtained: typical quiescence, δn / n ∼ 0.5% at 10 −4 mbar and B main ∼ 1 kG. The potential of the multifilamentary plasma source has been experimentally explored using a flexible transition magnetic field and the usual control features of a filament discharge. Probe measurements reveal that the plasma to be axially and radially uniform, an excellent scenario for wave launching and studying its propagating and phase mixing characteristics.

    Description: Dielectric wall charging of a cylindrical glass wall surrounded by a helicon antenna of 18 cm length is measured in a linear helicon plasma device with a diverging magnetic field. The ions because of their lesser mobility do not respond to the high frequency electric field and the electrons charge the wall to a negative DC potential also known as the DC self-bias. The wall potential in this device is characterized for different neutral pressure, magnetic field, and radio frequency (RF) power. Axial variation of wall potential shows higher self-bias potentials near the antenna rings. Ion magnetization in the source chamber increases both wall charging and plasma potential of the source due to confinement.

    Description: A simple integrated hydrogen sensor using Pd-Au alloy/air based one dimensional photonic crystal with an air defect layer is theoretically modeled. Structural parameters of the photonic crystal are delicately scaled to generate photonic band gap frequencies in a visible spectral regime. An optimized defect thickness permits a localized defect mode operating at a frequency within the photonic band gap region. Hydrogen absorption causes modification in the band gap characteristics due to variation of refractive index and lattice parameters of the alloy. As a result, the transmission peak appeared due to the resonant defect state gets shifted. This peak shifting is utilized to detect sparse amount of hydrogen present in the surrounding environment. A theoretical framework is built to calculate the refractive index profile of hydrogen loaded alloy using density functional theory and Bruggeman's effective medium approximation. The calculated refractive index variation of Pd 3 Au alloy film due to hydrogen loading is verified experimentally by measuring the reflectance characteristics. Lattice expansion properties of the alloy are studied through X-ray diffraction analyses. The proposed structure shows about 3 nm red shift of the transmission peak for a rise of 1% atomic hydrogen concentration in the alloy.
