    Description: The discovery of 13 serendipitous BL Lac objects in the Einstein IPC Slew Survey by means of x ray/radio vs. x ray/optical color-color diagrams and confirmation by optical spectroscopy are reported. These 13 BL Lacs were discovered using a technique which exploits the characteristic broad band spectra of BL Lacs. New VLA detections provide accurate fluxes (f(6 cm) is approximately 0.5 mJy) and 2 in. positions, facilitating the determination of an optical counterpart. All 13 new BL Lacs show essentially featureless optical spectra. Nine of these lie within the range of colors of known x ray selected BL Lacs. Of the remaining four, one is apparently x ray louder (by a factor of 1.5) or optically quieter (by 0.8 mags); and three are optically louder (by 1-1.3 mags) than x ray selected BL Lacs. Approximately 50 new BL Lacs in total are expected from VLA work and upcoming Australia Telescope observations, yielding a complete Slew Survey sample of approximately 90 BL Lacs.

    Description: Although the Einstein satellite detected cooling flows in the x ray emission from clusters of galaxies 10 years ago, the understanding of these flows remains incomplete. The x ray emitting gas in the centers of these clusters is so dense that its cooling time is shorter than a Hubble time. Thus gas may cool and flow into the center of the cluster. This cooling gas is thermally unstable and should quickly become inhomogeneous. Optical filamentation (1-100 kpc scales) often appears near the centers of nearby clusters containing cooling flows, usually within the central galaxies accreting the gas. Indeed, only clusters with well-developed cooling flows seem to possess highly luminous, emission-line nebulae. Researchers present here some results of preliminary observational and theoretical studies of this class of emission-line objects. Researchers observed a complete, x ray selected sample of 25 distant clusters of galaxies extracted from the Einstein Extended Medium Sensitivity Survey. They discovered luminous extended H alpha emission in 10 of these clusters. Thus at least 40 percent of the clusters in the sample contain cool gas. If we crudely compare the sample to that of Arnaud (1988), in which approx. 40 percent of his 104 x ray clusters have cooling flows, the result implies that cooling flows may actually be a more common phenomenon in the past than in the present. The connection between the cooling flow and the H alpha emission is a mystery. The straightforward calculation of 1 (photoionization) to 3 (shocks) recombinations per H atom in the cooling flow gives mass infall rates 3 to 100 times greater than M derived from x ray observations. Researchers have made some preliminary theoretical calculations in an attempt to resolve this problem.

    Description: Using the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, we have imaged a complete, flux-limited sample of Einstein Medium Sensitivity Survey BL Lacertae objects in order to study the properties of BL Lac host galaxies and to use quantitative methods to determine the richness of their galaxy cluster environments.

    Description: We present an x-ray spectral study of 12 distant (z = 0.17-0.54) rich clusters of galaxies observed with the Einstein Observatory Imaging Proportional Counter. These x-ray spectral data show evidence for substantial excess absorptions beyond those expected in the galaxy, indicating the presence of large amounts of x-ray absorbing cool gas in these distant clusters. The mean value of the excess absorptions corresponds to an absorbing gas column density approximately greater than 10(exp 21)/sq cm. We calculate the x-ray luminosities of the clusters with observed fluxes only in the 0.8-3.5 keV band where the fluxes are less effected by the absorptions, and use the temperature-to-luminosity correlation (known only for nearby clusters) to estimate the temperatures of the hot intracluster medium (ICM) in the distant clusters. These temperature estimates, together with the spectral fits, provide further constraints on the column densities in the individual clusters. For the cluster CL 0016+16, the lower limit on the column density is found to be 8 x 10(exp 20)/sq cm at the 99 percent confidence limit. We also show that the ratio of the temperature obtained from the spectral fit to the temperature expected from the correlation tends to decrease with increasing look-back time, indicating possible temperature evolution of the hot ICM in the recent past. The inclusion of this evolutionary effect further increases the absorptions required in fitting the spectra.

    Description: A 1 A resolution spectra of the nearby (z = 0.08797) Seyfert galaxy PG 1351+64 taken with the Faint Object Spectrograph (FOS) onboard the Hubble Space Telescope is presented. Spectral coverage runs from 1200-3200 A in the observed frame and includes emission and absorption features due to Ly-alpha, N 5, Si 4, C 4, and Mg 2. Three distinct intrinsic absorption systems in Ly-alpha, N 5, Si 4, and C 4, and tentatively in Mg 2, at velocities of 900 km/s, 1630 km/s, and 2900 km/s (plus or minus 100 km/s) relative to the emission-line redshift of the QSO were detected. The maximum relative velocity of these absorbers is less than 5000 km/s and therefore does not meet Weymann, Carswell, & Smith's criteria for Broad-Absorption-Line (BAL) QSO's at high-z. However, the absorptions are almost certainly intrinsic to the QSO given the low redshift of this object. In addition, PG 1351+64 is marginally radio-quiet, as are all BALQSO's, based on recent estimates of the radio-loud/radio-quiet dividing line. The narrow velocity width, less than 500 km/s, and low outflow velocities of the absorption systems are more similar to so called 'associated absorbers' seen at high-z in radio-loud quasars, but whose absorptions are thought to arise in clouds much farther from the nucleus (greater than 1 kpc) than are BAL clouds (1-10 pc). Despite the qualitative resemblance to the associated absorbers, the absorption systems in PG 1351+64 appear to be the low-luminosity analogs of BALQSO absorption troughs. The lower observed outflow velocities in PG 1351+64 are due to the much lower luminosity of the nuclear source in comparison to the high-z, high-luminosity BALQSO's. In addition, 'satellite' emission lines displaced 4000-5000 km/s blueward and redward of the Mg 2 emission were discovered.

    Description: Quasar absorption lines offer unique opportunities to probe the interstellar medium of external galaxies. Researchers present new optical and UV absorption line spectroscopy of the quasar 3C232 (z=0.55) revealing new detail in the foreground absorption system due to the bright, spiral galaxy NGC 3067 (cz=1420 km/s). Specifically, the spectra show evidence for two and possibly three separate absorption components in CaII and Na I spanning approx. 150 km/s. The original HI detection of Haschick and Burke (1975) corresponds to the strongest of these metal systems which exhibits doublet ratios consistent with saturation in both CaII and Na I. Due to the recent detection in HI emission of a tidal tail or finger of HI extending from the western edge of NGC 3067 through the position of 3C 232 (Carilli, van Gorkom and Stocke, 1989), the morphology of the HI absorber is now known and is not either a warped disk nor a spherical halo as had been proposed. New deep continuum and H alpha imaging provides a sensitive upper limit on the the ionizing continuum impinging upon this cloud (and thus a limit on the intensity of the extragalactic ionizing radiation field). Together with the observed UV spectrum of 3C 232, the optical emission line ratios and the deep H alpha imaging set a minimum distance between the quasar and the HI cloud disregarding redshift information. This limit strains the non-cosmological redshift interpretation for 3C 232 -- and this quasar is one of the original 5 3C quasars found to be too close to NGC galaxies as if by chance (Burbidge, Burbidge, Solomon and Strittmatter, 1972).

    Description: Using a complete, X-ray selected sample of BL Lacertae Objects (XBLs), we find that V sub e/V sub a = 0.34 +/- 0.06 implying that the cosmological evolution of this type of AGN is 'negative'; i.e., fewer or less luminous BL Lacs in the past compared to the current epoch. In the process of deriving this result, the selection criteria and observational properties of XBLs are described.

    Description: We present new results on BL Lacertae Objects discovered in an extensive X-ray survey of the high galactic latitude sky performed by the Einstein satellite. While BL Lacs have been found primarily in high frequency radio surveys, we show that X-ray emission is an efficient new method for finding such objects and will offer an outstanding opportunity to find many of these objects in the near future using the ROSAT all-sky survey. It is also shown that X-ray selected BL Lac objects have somewhat different optical and radio properties than their radio selected counterparts. Using a complete, flux limited sample of 16 X-ray selected BL Lacs, we show that their number counts differ decisively from those of X-ray selected QSOs. Moreover, using the few red shifts available for these objects and limits on red shift determined from resolving the optical images of most of the remainder of the sample, a preliminary V/Vmax = 0.37 +/- 0.06. This value suggests an evolution in luminosity and/or density opposite in sense to that of QSOs.

    Description: BL Lac objects, extracted from the Einstein Extended Medium Sensitivity Survey (EMSS), are examined. X-ray selection proved to be a powerful tool to find new BL Lacs, and allows the creation of complete, well defined and sizable samples. X-ray selected BL Lac objects (XBL) have in general more starlight in the optical spectra than radio selected BL Lacs. Redshifts for a significant fraction of objects in samples of XBL can be determined. It is thus possible to study the cosmological properties of BL Lac objects. Different models of luminosity functions of BL Lacs, including relativistic beaming, are considered and integrated over luminosity and redshift. The results are compared with the observed number-counts. The observed redshift distribution and the models' predictions are analyzed.

    Description: New x-ray optical, and radio observations of the bright, unidentified x-ray source MS 0317.7-6647 are presented suggesting that this source is a likely compact stellar remnant. As part of the Einstein Extended Medium Sensivity Survey, this source was discovered serendipitously in the Einstein Imaging Proportional Counter pointing towards the nearby (4.5 Mpc) spiral galaxy NGC 1313. The very high x-ray to optical flux ratio, pointlike ROSAT HRI detection, and extremely soft component in the x-ray spectrum of MS 0317.7-6647 eliminate all the usual classes of optical counterparts to faint x-ray sources except for a very massive x-ray binary (and black hole candidate) in NGC 1313, a nearby, companionless pulsar similar to Geminga, or a very nearby ( approximately 100 pc) isolated, old neutron star slowly accreting interstellar matter onto its magnetic poles. The presence of an IR cirrus cloud which shadows the approximately 0.25 keV x-ray background in this direction supports the latter possibilty.
