Description: Bulk compositions, petrology and mineralogy of Luna 16 aluminous mare basalt particles of less than 0.5 mm are described. The data rule out any close genetic relationships between Luna 16 and other major types of lunar mare basalts. Compared to high-Ti mare basalts, the Luna 16 basalts contain lower TiO2 and Ta and higher Al2O3 and REE abundances, suggesting that the Luna 16 source rocks crystallized later than (i.e. stratigraphically above) the ilmenite-bearing high-Ti basalt cumulate source rocks. The REE pattern for the Luna 16 basalts requires that the source material from which they were derived crystallized from a light REE enriched magma.

Description: Petrological and geochemical analysis of lithic fragments separated from the Apollo 15 deep-drill core showed these fragments to fall into the essentially the same range of rock types as observed in surface soil samples and large rock samples. Three particles are singled out as being of special interest. One sample is a mare basalt containing extremely evolved phases. The particle may represent small-scale imperfect crystal/liquid separation in a lava flow. A green glass particle is not the ultramafic emerald green glass described from the Apollo 15 site, but rather an ANT-like light green color, and has a quite different chemical composition from the ultramafic variety. One mare basalt displays a positive Eu anomaly and is enriched in plagioclase relative to olivine plus pyroxene.

Description: A thermodynamic analysis of pyroxene-melt equilibria is performed through use of a literature survey of analyses of high-Ca pyroxene and coexisting silicate melt pairs and analyses of low-Ca pyroxene silicate melt pairs. Reference is made to a modified version of a model developed by Bottinga and Weill (1972) which more successfully accounts for variations in melt composition than does a model which considers the melt to be composed of simple oxides which mix ideally. By using a variety of pyroxene melt relations, several pyroxene-melt and low-Ca pyroxene-high-Ca pyroxene geothermometers are developed which have internally consistant precisions of approximately + or - 20 C. Finally, it is noted that these equations may have application in modeling the evolution of mineral compositions during differentiation of basaltic magmas.

Description: The course for the future aeronautical communications architecture has been defined for more than 10 years and is known as the Aeronautical Telecommunication Network (ATN). However, the operational implementations of making use of the ATN remain 3-5 years away, and these implementations are still only in the early phases of long-range projects. Thus, it is an objective of this effort to consider what the potential outcome within the air transport industry may be, given the rapid growth in commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) products, networks, and services that are based upon the Internet TCP/IP protocol suite.

Description: The Cryogenic Limb Array Etalon Spectrometer for the NASA Upper Atmospheric Research Satellite uses solid-state focal plane arrays to detect emission from the earth's atmosphere over the IR wavelength range 3.5 to 13 microns. This paper discusses the design of the focal plane detector assembly and compares calculated performance with measurements. Measurements were made of focal plane noise and responsivity as functions of frequency (2 to 500 Hz) and temperature (12 to 19 K), pixel-to-pixel and across-array crosstalk, and linearity over a dynamic range of 100,000. The measurements demonstrate that the arrays satisfy the science requirements, and that, in general, there is reasonable agreement between the measurements and the analytical model.

Description: The paper describes some of the development work on gallium-doped germanium (Ge:Ga) and beryllium-doped germanium (Ge:Be) photoconductive detectors for use in far-infrared astronomical observations from a space platform such as IRAS. The paper is concerned primarily with detector performance and is divided into two major parts. The first presents the operating principles of this type of detector, while the second presents measured performance data under low-background flux conditions. It is shown that high sensitivity can be obtained from Ge:Ga and Ge:Be detectors under low-background and low-temperature conditions of operation. These detectors are useful for astronomical observations in the far-infrared over the wavelength range 30-120 microns. Major conclusions of the research work done so far are mentioned, including that detectors cut from the same crystal show reasonably good reproducibility of operating characteristics.

Description: Petrographic and electron microprobe studies have been carried out for 1230 particles from the Luna 24 drill core. At least three mare basalts were distinguished on the basis of major and minor element chemical compositions of pyroxenes. Mg-rich monomineralic particles of olivine and pyroxene defined one major type. The other two magmas were identified by the Ti/(Ti + Cr) ratio at constant Fe/(Fe + Mg) ratio in pyroxenes derived from polymineralic igneous lithic fragments. Whole rock chemical analyses for V and Cr also provided evidence for these distinct magmas.
