    Description: Results are presented of a laboratory investigation of the vibrational distribution of NO produced in the reaction between O(3P) and NO2(X 2A1). To minimize vibrational quenching, the experiments were performed in a fast-flow system. The production of NO(X) radicals was monitored with laser-induced fluorescence. It was found that the NO vibrational population ratio measured correlates well with the earlier observation of high vibrational excitation in O2.

    Description: High resolution spectra of Jupiter in the 3.3 micrometer region have so far failed to reveal either the continuum or the line emissions that can be unambiguously attributed to the nu(sub 3) band of methane (Drossart et al. 1993; Kim et al. 1991). Nu(sub 3) line intensities predicted with the help of two simple non-Local Thermodynamic Equilibrium (LTE) models -- a two-level model and a three-level model, using experimentally determined relaxation coefficients, are shown to be one to three orders of magnitude respectively below the 3-sigma noise level of these observations. Predicted nu(sub 4) emission intensities are consistent with observed values. If the methane mixing ratio below the homopause is assumed as 2 x 10(exp -3), a value of about 300 K is derived as an upper limit to the temperature of the high stratosphere at microbar levels.

    Description: The temperature dependence of the NO + O3 reaction rate was examined by means of the fast flow technique. Several different experimental conditions and detection schemes were employed. With excess NO or excess O3, NO2 chemiluminescence was monitored. In addition, with excess O3, NO was followed by fluorescence induced by an NO microwave discharge lamp. The results of the three independent sets of data are compared and found to agree within experimental error, indicating the absence of secondary chemistry which might complicate the kinetics. The data exhibit curvature on an Arrhenius plot; however, the simple Arrhenius expression k = (2.6 + or - 0.8) x 10 to the -12th exp(-1435 + or - 64/T) cu cm/molecule s is an adequate description for T between 195 and 369 K. This result is compared to earlier determinations.

    Description: The objective is to provide photochemical, kinetic, and spectroscopic information necessary for photochemical models of the Earth's upper atmosphere and to examine reactions or reactants not presently in the models to either confirm the correctness of their exclusion or provide evidence to justify future inclusion in the models.     Description: The photodissociation of the OH radical was studied at 157 nm via the detection of the product H atoms with the resonance fluorescence technique. OH radicals were produced in a fast-flow cell from the reaction between H and NO2 and subsequently photodissociated by an excimer laser operating on the F2 emission. The quantum yield for photodissociation of OH was measured to be 1.10 + or - 0.28. The photodissociation cross section was calculated to be 6.6 x 10 to the -18th sq cm (+ or - 25 percent).

    Description: A model for the formation of CO in the expanding ejecta of SN 1987A suggests that the 4.6-micron and 2.3 micron emissions noted in the SN spectrum may originate from the inner metal-rich regions of the ejecta. Also reported are the assignment of a 2.26-micron excess feature in the high-resolution IR spectra to the v = 2 to 0 overtone of CO(+) and the possible identification of a 2.95-micron feature with the v = 2 to 0 transition of electronically excited CO. The results suggest that the regions in which CO formation takes place must be ionized to a substantially lower degree than regions which dominate the line emission of heavier metals.

    Description: Consideration is given to the proposal that PAHs are the source of IR continuum and emission features and the visible diffuse bands. Absolute IR cross-sections have been obtained for eight PAHs. The results show that a thermal continuum is not consistent with the spectra obtained, and that an array of normal molecules shows a spectrum that is more complex than the observed spectrum. The cross-sections of the UV spectra are 2-3 orders of magnitude larger than those of the IR spectra. It is suggested that, to account for these observations, structure must be produced in the UV extinction curve.
