Notizen: Abstract Photometry and first results of extensive CCD-spectroscopy of the UX UMa system RW Sex are presented. The period is found to be P=0.24486 days and the semi-amplitude of the radial velocity is K1=101 km s−1. The mass of a Roche-lobe filling secondary is M2=(0.54±0.09) M0 and, for M1≧M2, the mass ratio is M1/M2=1.5±0.5. The accretion rate is about (2–3) 1017 g/s. The model for RW Sex by Greenstein and Oke is discussed and rejected.

Notizen: Abstract Our 5-color photometric observations of the intermediate polar H2215-086/FO Aqr which were collected between 1982 and the end of 1985 reveal that the 20.9 min rotational periodincreases with a spin-down rate of (1.0±0.2) 10−10 ss−1. This is in marked contrast to the spin-up behaviour of other well studied DQ Her systems. The pulse profile of the optical modulation as a function of wavelength changes drastically across the Balmer jump suggesting the presence of two distinct components of pulsed optical emission which furthermore are shifted in phase with respect to the X-ray maxima observed with EXOSAT. The UV, optical and IR flux distribution can adequately be accounted for by an accretion disc model with a mass-flow rate $$\dot M$$ = 1017 g s−1 and an inner boundary which is ≈ 10 times larger than the radius of the white dwarf. Our results support the magnetic accretion torque theory worked out by Ghosh and Lamb which can account for both spin-up and spin-down of the accreting star depending on the value of the fastness parameters ωs. We derive a magnetic moment μ ≃ 1.0 1033 G cm3 which will allow H2216-086 to evolve into an AM Her system once it has crossed the 2–3 h period gap.

Notizen: Abstract We report results on three low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXB) in the LMC, obtained with EXOSAT, IUE and ground-based (ESO) telescopes: LMC X-2 which appears to be “Sco X-1”-like, LHG 83 and LHG 87. The latter are two weaker sources first detected in the course of the HEAO-B LMC survey. They have faint optical counterparts of which LHG 87 was only recently identified by us. In X-rays, they are characterized by ultrasoft X-ray spectra possibly characteristic of black-hole primaries. LHG 83 furthermore shows evidence for X-ray ionization of the surrounding interstellar medium, similar to the He III region around the black-hole candidate LMC X-1. X-ray binaries with masses of compact objects in excess of 3 M⊙ and ultrasoft X-ray spectra are comparatively frequent in the LMC. We suggest that subcritical accretion onto black holes takes place in LHG 83 and LHG 87.

Notizen: Abstract The emission regions on the white-dwarf primaries of AM Her type systems are suggested to be extended and offset from the magnetic pole similar to the oval arc of emission formed by the Earth's auroral zone. In ST LMi and EF Eri, the emitting areas of the bremsstrahlung, the soft X-ray, and the cyclotron sources are shown to display a hierarchy with a small bremsstrahlung core being surrounded by a larger cyclotron halo. Core and halo are characterized by large differences in specific accretion rate with that in the bremsstrahlung core corresponding to a sizable fraction (≳10%) of the Eddington rate.

Notizen: Abstract The initial discovery of soft X-rays from Nova Muscae 1983 was followed by eight additional observations of the three brightest novae whose outburst stage coincided with the lifetime ofEXOSAT satellite; namely three more observations of Nova Muscae 1983, three observations of Nova Vulpeculae 1984#1 (PW Vul), and two observations of Nova Vulpeculae 1984#2. Through these observations we sampled the soft X-ray light curve of classical novae from optical maximum to ∼900 days after. The observations seem best explained by the constant bolometric luminosity model of a hot white dwarf remnant. Although the measurements suffer from limited statistics, very broad energy bandpass, and incomplete sampling of any single nova, their constraints on the theories of nova outburst are significant. One constraint is that the lifetime of the white dwarf remnant in Nova Muscae 1983 is ∼2 to 3 years, which leads to the conclusion that the burned envelope massM burn should be of the order of $$10^{ - 6} \left( {\frac{{10^{38} erg s ^{ - 1} }}{{L_{burn} }}} \right)M_ \odot $$ . The second constraint is that the maximum temperature, of the white dwarf remnant should approximately be within 200 000 K to 400 000 K. We estimate that a white dwarf remnant evolving like the central star of a planetary nebula, with core mass of 0.8 to 0.9M ⊙, core luminosity of ∼2×104 L ⊙, and envelope mass of 10−6 M ⊙, can explain the general characteristics of the X-ray measurements for Nova Muscae 1983. In order to have ≥1.1M ⊙ core mass, estimated from the early observations of bolometric luminosity in the UV to infrared range, a wind withM≤5×10−7 M ⊙ yr−1 appears to be necessary. The few observations of Nova Vulpeculae 1984 #1 and Nova Vulpeculae 1984#2, during the first year after outburst, give a risetime and intensity that is consistent with a constant bolometric luminosity model.

Notizen: [Auszug] The central region of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) contains a variety of astrophysical objects including supernova remnants, X-ray binary systems, the 30 Doradus complex of hot stars, as well as supernova 1987A. A survey in X-rays of this region, taken as the 'first light' observations with the ...
