    Notes: Abstract Recently, we have discovered that—besides the all-optical photo-thermal bistability in transmission—the excitation of thin CdS films with the 514.5 nm line of an argon laser causes all-optical bistability in the luminescent radiation. The emitted radiation of the CdS layers lies far enough in the infrared region of the spectrum so that all-optical bistability in luminescence can be observed through GaAs wafers, i.e. an all-optical bistable loop remains in the direction of the propagation of the incident laser beam even though GaAs is strongly absorptive at the excitation wavelength. On the basis of this penetrating feature of all-optical bistability, we present a new concept for an architecture of future optical data processing devices.

    Notes: Abstract All-optical photo-thermally induced bistabilities in luminescence of a thin (10 μm) CdS:Cu film were studied at 170 K. The bistable effect was induced by the 514.5 nm line of an argon laser and measured by putting low-pass filters for yellow and red light in the reflected and transmitted beams. In the visible part of the spectrum, the loop contrasts measured in reflection geometry are considerably smaller than those achieved in transmission geometry. In the near infrared, however, the loop contrasts do not depend on the geometry used. This is due to the observation that visible emissions from the surface region depend less sensitively on temperature than do those from the bulk.

    Notes: Abstract First reports of absorptive all-optical bistabilities in reflectance and luminescence of a Fabry-Perot cavity consisting of thin (0.70 μm) ZnSe film are presented. We demonstrate that the observation of bistability in the reflected beam does not require necessarily the appearance of bistability in the transmitted beam. Luminescence bistabilities, however, are observed both in the light captured from the incident side of the film and in the light emitted from the transmission side. The bistabilities in reflection and luminescence are explained quite satisfactorily by the principle of increasing absorption due to photo-irradiation and the dependence of the luminescence intensity on a photo-thermally induced temperature change, respectively. All experiments were carried out at room temperature with the 488 nm line of an argon laser.
