Description: The First ODINCARSA Planning Workshop for the Caribbean Islands was held in Christ Church, Barbados between 15 and 18 December 2003, co-sponsored by the Coastal Zone Management Unit of Barbados. The workshop was attended by participants from eight countries in the Caribbean. The meeting reviewed the ocean data and information management capacity available in this region, identified needs and capacity building requirements, and prepared a comprehensive work plan and timetable to develop a regional cooperative network for the management of oceanographic data and marine information on the basis of the experience of the ODINCARSA project in South America.

Description: A meeting was convened by the Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (SCOR), the International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange (IODE) of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) and the Marine Biological Laboratory/Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Library (MBLWHOI Library) on 2 April 2010 to advance the two use cases that had been developed over the past two years by the SCOR/IODE activity on data publication. Increased access to data is becoming increasingly important to stimulate data reuse and to get data into the public domain, where it can contribute to discussions of important science issues, including the ocean’s role in climate change and the global carbon cycle, marine biodiversity, fisheries, harmful algal blooms, and others. The meeting noted progress in the two use cases, on publishing data related to traditional journal articles and data held by data centres, and made plans for future cooperation between data centres and libraries.

Description: This is the third edition of the catalog of reference materials suited for use in marine science, originally compiled in 1986 for NOAA, IOC and UNEP. The catalog lists close to 2,000 reference materials from sixteen producers and contains information about their proper use, sources, availability, and analyte concentrations. Indices are included for elements, isotopes, and organic compounds, as are cross references to CAS registry numbers, alternate names, and chemical structures of selected organic compounds. This catalog is being published independently by both NOAA and IOC/UNEP and is available from NOAA/NOS/ORCA in electronic form.

Description: The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO was founded in 1960 to promote international cooperation and to coordinate programmes in research, services and capacity-building, in order to learn more about the nature and resources of the ocean and coastal areas and to apply that knowledge for the improvement of management, sustainable development, the protection of the marine environment, and the decision-making processes of its Member States. IOC plays a key role as a global broker involving the promotion of science innovation, nurturing programmes, transferring, disseminating and sharing information, data and knowledge, best practices, assessment and scientific services related to Oceanography. This process is done in an inclusive and participatory way, including views of the scientific community, academia, Member States, etc., and including cultural diversity principles. Therefore, the Commission collaborates with international organizations in the field of ocean and coastal area scientific research, observation and related services, and especially with those organizations of the United Nations system which are willing and prepared to contribute to the purpose and functions of the Commission.
