    Beschreibung: The interaction of the solar wind with unmagnetized objects possessing an ionosphere is reviewed, with emphasis on recent developments. Venus, Mars, Titan, comets (including the artificial comet created by AMPTE) and the unusual interplanetary events interpreted as cometesimals are considered. The role of the interplanetary magnetic field and of mass loading in producing the observed interactions are highlighted. Interpretation to date is based largely on an MHD (fluid) treatment, but recent results from the first AMPTE barium release and from recordings made at Venus suggest that finite Larmor radius effects introduce asymmetries in the solar wind interaction.

    Beschreibung: Data obtained by the Pioneer Venus Orbiter's retarding potential analyzer during two orbits with periapsis in the subpolar region of Venus are presented. Two electron populations are observed: a low-temperature population that is interpreted to be an electron sheath population trapped in the positive spacecraft potential well, and a high-temperature population representing the ambient solar wind electron population. The sheath population's increase and decrease by a factor of 5, as the spacecraft approaches and recedes from a position near periapsis (independently of the bow shock's position relative to the spacecraft), is interpreted as being due to an increase and decrease in the density of cold electrons trapped in the spacecraft potential well.

    Beschreibung: The subject grant (NAG 2-501) supported the analysis of magnetic field data from the Pioneer Venus orbiter for the period 10/1/87 to 9/30/94. During that period, 188 papers were contributed to scientific meetings that either analyzed the magnetometer data or used the data as part of the analysis of a scientific problem. Further, 107 papers were published in research journals and books. The magnetic moment of Venus was described. Venus was found to be essentially devoid of any intrinsic magnetic field. There was evidence though for the presence of lightning in the Venus atmosphere. The altitude distribution of impulsive signals in the night atmosphere was mapped and geographic clusters were found, most probably associated with local time ordering. A new means to create flux ropes in the ionosphere was postulated. On the nightside, ionospheric holes, ionospheric clouds, and tail rays were studied. The subsolar ionopause and the magnetic barrier were examined as was the altitude asymmetry of the ionopause, properties of the magnetosheath, and location of the bow shock upstream waves.

    Beschreibung: It is argued that the impulsive 100-Hz noise bursts detected with the use of the electric field antenna on the Pioneer Venus Orbiter (PVO) have plasma wave charcteristics that can only be explained if they are whistler mode signals of a type that can be produced by atmospheric discharges. It is further argued that these data are evidence for lightning and volcanic activity on Venus. A reply contends that the PVO electric field measurements are unrelated to either the lower atmosphere or the surface of Venus.
