Notizen: A recycle gel-permeation chromatography (GPC) method for extrapolating to infinite resolution is proposed. From the GPC calibration curve, the extrapolated elution peak width volume can be converted into peak width in decades of molecular weight. For an essentially Gaussian distribution, the weight-average/number-average molecular weight ratio can be determined from a calculated conversion table.

Notizen: Soluble ethylene polymerization catalysts derived from (π-C5H5)2Ti(R)Cl and R′AlCl2 where R is ethyl or higher alkyl and R′ may be methyl or ethyl, were studied both by polymerization kinetics at 0°C and by diagnostic experiments. An early acceleration in rate occurred at this temperature in toluene solvent which was due to a solvent dependent increase in catalyst activity, not to a gradual formation of catalyst. No such solvent effect was found in nonaromatic solvents. The subsequent decay in rate, at least at low temperatures, did not depend upon valence reduction. The effect of Al/Ti ratio was studied, and certain discrepancies in the literature were shown to be due to the method of making kinetic measurements. Oxygen, which has previously been reported to affect the polymerization rate with these catalysts, was also found to eliminate the acceleration period in toluene when present in the amount of 1% of the catalyst. These catalysts gave polymers at low temperature for which the active site had long life and which did not undergo chain transfer. Therefore, they approximate many of the characteristics of living polymers.

Notizen: Soluble ethylene polymerization catalysts derived from (π-C5H5)2Ti(R)Cl and R ′AlCl2, where R = methyl or phenyl and R ′ = methyl or ethyl, were studied both by polymerization kinetics at 0°C and by diagnostic experiments. It was found that the first insertion of ethylene into the Ti—R bond is difficult when R = methyl or phenyl, and for this reason these catalysts show a different overall behavior than when R = ethyl or higher alkyl.

Beschreibung: A new remote sensing instrument, the Submillimeterwave Limb Sounder, has been developed to simultaneously measure ClO, HCl, O3 and HO2 from high altitude balloon and aircraft platforms. The instrument is a double sideband heterodyne radiometer measuring atmospheric thermal emission spectra near 640 GHz from the Earth's limb. The instrument was flown in April and October, 1991 and in February, 1992 on high altitude balloon platforms over the southwestern United States.

Beschreibung: The balloon-borne microwave limb sounder (BMLS) measures atmospheric thermal emission from millimeter wavelength spectral lines to determine vertical profiles of stratospheric species. The instrument flown to date operates at 205 GHz to measure ClO, O3, and H2O2. A 63 GHz radiometer will be added to test the technique for determining tangent point pressure from the MLS experiment on the upper atmosphere research satellite (UARS). Many additional species could also be measured by the BMLS. A radiometer at 270 GHz would provide measurements of HO2, NO2, HNO3, N2O, O-16O-18O-16, and HCN. With this addition, the BMLS can test the current theory of O3 photochemical balance in the upper stratosphere.

Beschreibung: The purpose of the Shuttle microwave system experiment (SIMS) is to utilize the capabilities of the Space Shuttle to perform passive microwave measurements of thermal emission from the earth's atmosphere and surface, which can be interpreted in terms of meaningful atmospheric and geophysical parameters. The paper is a status report of an ongoing definition phase study of SIMS. The wavelengths and observable parameters for the SIMS channels are identified. The SIMS instrument is discussed with particular reference to the antenna system. A system consisting of a parabolic torus reflector offset fed by a number of feeds and radiometers on a rotating wheel is determined to be the best antenna configuration for SIMS. A tentative data flow diagram for SIMS is also provided.
