Beschreibung: Nitrogen in fossil fuels is present in pyrrolic- and pyridinic-functional groups. In contrast, organic nitrogen in living organisms is overwhelmingly found in amino acids in proteins and peptides. Petroleum is the result of the maturation of the organic remains of organisms, so what causes the change in nitrogen functionality between organisms and oil, and when does it occur? Using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) supported by elemental analysis, biochemical analysis, and pyrolysis-gas chromatography with atomic emission detection (py43C-AED) for nitrogen, surface sediments from the Peru upwelling region were shown to contain at least four different organic nitrogen-containing functional groups: amino, pyrrole, pyridine and (tentatively) quaternary nitrogen. The percent in amino groups is at most 40-45%, and possibly as little as 10-15%. Heterocyclic nitrogen (pyrroles and pyridines) makes up a greater proportion of the total than amino N, with pyrroles more abundant than pyridines. With increasing burial depth, the percentage of total N present as amino nitrogen declines to low levels, whilst the proportion present as (tentatively) quaternary nitrogen increases. Pyrroles are always more abundant than pyridines. These semi-quantitative data suggest that the pyrrolic and pyridinic structures, found in petroleums and coals, are present at a very shallow burial depths in the Peru upwelling sediments.

Notizen: Summary This paper describes the systematic characterization of glass and the newly introduced fused silica and quartz capillary columns from surface wettability measurements. Common gas chromatographic stationary phases were used in capillary-rise measurements at temperatures up to 300°C. By construction of Zisman plots and using the Cassie equation, the relative surface concentrations of wettable and non-wettable groups were determined. By application of the Fowkes equation, the dispersion force component of the surface energy was investigated. The influence of various surface treatments such as leaching, silylation, and polymeric film formation are discussed. Wettability measurements were also used to evaluate the thermostability of various treated surfaces and to compare the surface properties of glass, quartz, and fused silica. The wettability of the surfaces with selected stationary phases as a function of temperature is also discussed.

Notizen: Summary The retention index of a planar polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbon on the GC phases OV-101, SE-52, and OV-17 is strictly related only to the boiling point, and less closely to the relative molecular mass. The very approximates relation with connectivity index ins only a consequence of the latter. On a nematic lqiuid crystal phase, a variation of activity coefficient, expressed in terms of a shape factor, also influences the retention of PAH.

Notizen: A method is described for surface deactivation and modification of fused silica capillary columns with a cyanopropyl-containing reagent. The deactivation procedure involved a dehydrocondensation reaction between a bis(cyanopropyl)methylhydropolysiloxane reagent and surface silanol groups at an optimum temperature of only 250°C. Actual critical surface tension measurements were made using the capillary rise method. Excellent deactivation for acidic and basic compounds at the low ng level, and wettability for nonpolar and polar polysiloxane stationary phases were obtained. A procedure was developed to remove acidic impurities that are present in polar stationary phases.

Notizen: Although coupled liquid chromatographygas chromatography (LC-GC) was first demonstrated ten years ago, only in the last few years has there been a sudden surge of interest in the technique. Approximately 70% of the total number of LC-GC applications have been published in the last two years (1987-88) alone. This review categorizes LC-GC publications into four main application areas: fossil fuels, foods, environmental samples, biologiical/pharmaceutical samples, and miscellaneous samples. Multidimensional separations carried out using other coupled-column chromatographic techniques (such as supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) with GC, and on-line trace enrichment-GC) have also been included in this review.

Notizen: The film of stationary phase on the wall of a capillary column and that of the phase solution during both static and dynamic coating is subject to Rayleigh instability, which is quite independent of so-called wettability. A theory is developed which shows that the logarithmic growth rate of Rayleigh instabilities is proportional to the surface tension and to the third power of the film thickness, and inversely to the viscosity and to the fourth power of the capillary diameter. Determination of the variation of the viscosities of stationary phase solutions with concentration in coating solvents, and the variation of the viscosities of neat stationary phases with temperature, both revealed that heating and/or diluting changed the viscosities of phases with π-electron-containing, groups much more than for polydimethylsiloxanes. Rayleigh instability is therefore more important during coating of phenyl-containing phases such as OV-17, and later during column operation. The efficiencies of capillary columns of different diameters coated with a number of phases under different conditions of temperature and coating rate, and then operated at different temperatures were in good agreement with the predictions of the theory.
