Notes: The effect of solvent composition on the acidity of substituted phenols in DMSO-H2O systems was examined. It is shown that in DMSO-H2O mixtures with up to 35 mol% DMSO there is a linear relationship between the pKa values of monosubstituted phenols in the binary solvent mixtures of different compositions and the corresponding pKa values in water. This leads to an equation relating the slope and intercept terms, pKa(DMSO-H2O) = slope[pKa(H2O)] + intercept. The basis of this relationship in the Kirkwood-Westheimer equation is examined. The significance of a possible ‘supersolvent’ is discussed. The applicability of the relationships derived herein to other rate-equilibria relationships and solvent mixtures is considered. Notes: Rate constants have been determined in aqueous Me2SO mixtures for the reaction of super-electrophilic 4,6-dinitrobenzofuroxan (DNBF) with a series of hydroxy- and methoxy-substituted benzenes whose pKa values range between -3 and -9. The study extends the reactivity range of weakly basic aromatics with DNBF, from the family of indoles previously studied with pKa values ranging from -1 to -6. The overall rate constants for the reactions of DNBF as the electrophile are at least one order of magnitude greater than for the reactions of H3O+ with the same series of aromatics. This lends further credence to the notion that DNBF possesses super-electrophilic properties. An LFER is observed between logk50%Me2SODNBF and pKaH2O with slope 0.54. In the case of 1,3,5-trimethoxybenzene a significant kinetic isotope effect (KIE) is observed (kH/kD = 3.71 in 50% Me2SO). This system hence affords one of the few instances in which a KIE has been observed in SEAr reactions. It follows from the observed KIE that the addition of DNBF to the aromatic is not rate-limiting and that reversion to reactants and proton loss from the arenonium intermediate occur at comparable rates. Structures of the products of electrophilic substitution have been confirmed by 1H NMR. In all cases the regiochemistry of the reactions was identical to that observed in protonation studies of the starting aromatics. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notes: To probe regioselectivity in Meisenheimer complexation, the reaction of two picryl halides (PiX where X = F, Cl) with a series of aryloxide nucleophiles (phenoxide, 2,4,6-trimethylphenoxide and 2,6-di-t-butylphenoxide) were monitored by 1H NMR spectroscopy in dimethyl sulphoxide at ambient temperature and in acetonitrile-dimethoxyethane(MeCN-DME) at low temperature (-40°C). The reactions of both picryl halides with the ambident (oxygen versus carbon) nucleophile, phenoxide ion (PhO-), and 2,4,6-trimethylphenoxide (mesitoxide, MesO-) leads to clean SNAr displacement of X via the oxygen site of the nucleophile to form the respective aryl picryl ethers, i.e. phenyl picryl ether (3a) and mesityl picryl ether (3b). Meisenheimer complex formation at C-1 or C-3 was not detected in these systems. With 2,-6-di-t-butylphenoxide (2,6-DTBPhO-), where oxygen attachment of the aryloxide is precluded by the bulky ortho t-butyl groups, para-carbon attachment was found to occur at C-1 to give picryl 2,6-di-t-butylphenol (3d) in competition with C-attack at C-3 to give the respective carbon-bonded Meisenheimer complexes [X = Cl (4) and X = F (5)]. For both picryl halides, the ratio of 3d, the product of C-1 attack, to the product of C-3 attack, 4 or 5, was roughly 7:1. These findings are considered with regard to the nucleofugality of the halide, X, steric hindrance (F-strain) to attack by the aryloxides at the various positions and stereoelectronic stabilization of C-1 adducts afforded by n → σ* donation.

Notes: We report the first instance of the levelling of oximate reactivity in a deprotonation process, which is shown to have as origin the desolvation of the oximate ion prior to actual proton transfer, in accord with the large predominance of the work term (wr) far exceeding the intrinsic barrier term in the Marcus formulation.Supporting information for this article is available on the WWW under //http://www.wiley-vch.de/contents/jc_2046/1999/99076_s.pdf or from the author.

Notes: A kinetic spectrophotometric investigation of the reaction of the hydrogen peroxide anion with methyl p-nitrophenyl sulfate in methanol solvent resulted in the evaluation of the pKa of HOOH in methanol at 25°C as 15.8 ± 0.2. Since normal kinetic procedures for the determination of the equilibrium constant K for the process CH3O- + H2O2 ⇄ CH3OH + HO2- were found to be associated with high uncertainty, another procedure was devised to establish the magnitude of K. This method is based on an analysis of the changing slopes of plots of pseudo-first-order rate constants against the total base concentration as the stoichiometric amount of hydrogen peroxide is varied. The method is applicable to any system in which anionic nucleophiles generated in situ compete with solvent anions. Such a corroboration of kinetically determined equilibrium constants is believed essential. The kinetic data allow the specific rate constant kHOO-for the reaction of methyl p-nitrophenyl sulfate with hydrogen peroxide anions to be evaluated and yield the rate constant ratio kHOO-/kMeO- = 8.8 ± 2.2. This confirms the existence of an α effect at saturated carbon in this system.

Notes: The 1H and 13C NMR spectra of 4,4′-bis(N-isopropyl-N-nitrosoamino)biphenyl at 22°C were consistent with the presence of three isomers due to slow rotation about the N - N bonds of the two N-nitroso groups. The structures of the three isomers were assigned by means of their symmetries and from the known effects of the two orientations of the N-nitroso group on 1H and 13C NMR chemical shifts. Each conversion of an N-nitroso group from anti to syn to an aryl group was associated with the same free energy difference (0.26 kcal mol-1) after symmetry corrections were made. The changes in the 13C NMR spectra recorded from 95 to 150°C were simulated using a program for classical four-site exchange. The potential barrier to rotation was calculated to be 20.76±0.06 kcal mol-1 at 400 K.

Notes: The proton NMR assignments for a series of 12 thermo- and photochromic 1,3,3-trimethylspiro(indoline-2,2′-benzopyrans) dyes is reported. All of the protons in the dye molecule were assigned through a combination of homonuclear decoupling experiments and correlation spectroscopy. The relative stereochemistry of the indolino gem-dimethyl groups was assigned so that, for the S-epimer, the pro-R methyl was found to resonate at 1.24 ppm while the pro-S methyl appeared at 1.37 ppm for compound 1.
