    Notes: Of 24 different polymer and surfactant materials examined, a carboxypolymethylene (“Carbopol”) was found to cause enhancement of respiration rates in an Aspergillus niger culture by as much as 200%. Enhancement of other fermentation parameters, such as cellular growth and amylase production, was also observed.The enhancement effects of Carbopol were examined with clusters of spores and mold pellets. In the first case, it appears that the ionized carboxyl groups of Carbopol induced electrostatic repulsion among the spores thus initiating pulp growth with increased interfacial area of contact between the mold and the nutrient medium. In the second case, the Carbopol additive formed a thin film attached to the surface of the pellets which seemed to be responsible for an increased rate of potassium transport and, hence, fermentation yields. Additive utilization as substrate and physiological changes in the culture were not observed in these cases.It was also found that the probability of pellet formation, the size of pellets formed, and the number of spores per pellet can be correlated to the energy input to the fermentation system.

    Notes: Candida lipolytica (strain ATCC 8661) was grown on a simple defined medium with n-dodecane as sole carbon source under batch and continuous fermentation conditions.     Notes: Immobilized invertase was prepared by binding native invertase to a polyamine type ion-exchange resin. Kinetic behavior of the immobilized invertase on these small pellets was investigated in a packed-bed reactor. For low flow rates, an effect of interparticle diffusion on the Machaelis constant was observed and a correlation was proposed to evaluate the effect. At high flow rates, Michaelis and inhibition constants were determined and compared with those for native invertase. With large pellets, intraparticle diffusion was found to be important and at high substrate concentrations, the effectiveness factor exceeded unity. Good agreement was found between the theoretical analyses and the experimental data.

    Notes: The kinetic behavior of the enzymatic breakdown of crosslinked dextran (Sephadex) by a dextranase from Penicillium funiculosum was investigated as a model for enzymatic degradation of insoluble materials. A theoretical model is developed for the description of an enzymatic reaction on an insoluble substrate. Experimental data are compared to those predicted by the model which are calculated by using independently determined parameter-values such as the Michael is constants, effective pore radius of the particles, and the Stokes radius of the enzymes. Fairly good agreement was found between the theoretical analysis and the experimental data.

    Notes: We have investigated the upgrading of some typical pulp and paper mill solid wastes into protein-enriched animal feed using the cellulolytic fungus Chaetomium cellulolyticum. The waste residues used were six different primary clarifier sludges and a sample of tertiary centricleaner rejects. These were obtained from mills whose modes of operation spanned the range typically in present-day usage: groundwood, sulfite, semichemical, Kraft, and thermomechanical pulping, with and without bleaching. Crude protein production from the solid waste residues is compared to that obtainable from fermentation of untreated or caustic-pretreated sawdusts. Some of these waste residues, especially the Kraft pulp mill rejects, appear to be promising sources of substrate for single-cell protein production. In these preliminary findings, up to 28% dry weight crude protein content of the product has been obtained at specific growth rates of up to 0.12hr-1 on direct utilization of the wastes.

    Notes: A correlation for estimating the diffusion coefficients of protein molecules is presented. The correlation is based upon literature values of the protein diffusion coefficients and molal volumes for 143 proteins. The correlation can be used for the estimation of diffusion coefficients using only molecular weight. Accuracy is such that a linear regression on 301 proteins showed 75% of the diffusion coefficients estimated fell within 20% of the experimental values. The relationship between this correlation, the Stokes-Einstein equation, and the Wilke-Chang correlation is discussed.

    Notes: A new method has been developed for the measurement of overall volumetric mass transfer coefficient (KLa) in gas-liquid-solid systems. This method is based on the examination of gas phase dynamics in a three-phase contactor and consists of measuring continuously the response of the outlet gas composition to a step input change of CO2 in the inlet gas stream. The advantages and limitations of the new method are presented and its sensitivity is discussed on the basis of model predictions. Preliminary results on the implementation of the CO2 method are also reported. Experimental data obtained in a nonviscous electrolyte solution show that the proposed method compares favorably with the conventional dissolved oxygen technique, provided that a correction is made to take account of the difference in diffusivity of oxygen and carbon dioxide.

    Notes: In gas-liquid dispersions based on viscous non-Newtonian fluids, numerous very small bubbles are formed due to their high residence times in contacting devices such as bubble columns. The influence of these small bubbles on the measurement of the volumetric mass transfer coefficient in the contactor by the dynamic CO2 gas analysis method is discussed. It is found that their effect on this measuring technique is insignificant compared to that when using the conventional dissolved-oxygen technique.
