Notes: The occurrence of instabilities in chemically reacting systems, resulting in unsteady and spatially inhomogeneous reaction rates, is a widespread phenomenon. In this article, we use nonlinear signal processing techniques to extract a simple, but accurate, dynamic model from experimental data of a system with spatiotemporal variations. The approach consists of a combination of two steps. The proper orthogonal decomposition [POD or Karhunen-Loève (KL) expansion] allows us to determine active degrees of freedom (important spatial structures) of the system. Projection onto these “modes” reduces the data to a small number of time series. Processing these time series through an artificial neural network (ANN) results in a low-dimensional, nonlinear dynamic model with almost quantitative predictive capabilities. This approach is demonstrated using spatiotemporal data from CO oxidation on a Pt (110) crystal surface. In this special case, the dynamics of the two-dimensional reaction profile can be successfully described by four modes; the ANN-based model not only correctly predicts the spatiotemporal short-term behavior, but also accurately captures the long-term dynamics (the attractor). While this approach does not substitute for fundamental modeling, it provides a systematic framework for processing experimental data from a wide variety of spatiotemporally varying reaction engineering processes.

Notes: An analysis is made of diffusion and chemical reaction in an isothermal multicomponent fluid. Transient gas-phase reaction in a one-dimensional nonflow system and steady state gas-phase or surface reaction in a tubular reactor are considered. The equations are linearized around some state away from equilibrium. Multicomponent and binary diffusivity expressions are used and a series of reactions of varying complexity is considered. The possibility of oscillations increases as the complexity of the reactions is increased. These oscillations occur with time in the nonflow system and with space-time in the tubular reactor, and it appears that any reacting mixture which oscillates in one of these two systems will also oscillate in the other.

Notes: Experiments were carried out on the electrodissolution of iron from a disk electrode rotating at 900 rpm in 1 M H2SO4. Current was measured as a function of applied potential. Potentiostatic current oscillations, all of which were chaotic, occurred over a range of applied potential. The characteristics of these chaotic oscillations were studied with the aid of state space plots and Poincaré sections, and with the calculation of ν, the correlation dimension; the latter quantity varied smoothly between 2.4 and 6.0 throughout the range of applied potential studied. The attractor for which ν = 2.4 can be represented by a three-dimensional state space plot.

Notes: Diffusion and either surface or gas-phase reaction in a ternary ideal gas mixture in steady fully developed laminar flow in a tube is considered. The linearized equations valid near equilibrium and under isothermal conditions are solved. Concentration profiles predicted using a multicomponent diffusivity matrix are compared to those predicted using more approximate diffusivities. Local overshoots past equilibrium occur, but oscillations (with axial position) are not possible. A simplified diffusivity expression is found which predicts cup-mixing mole fractions in good agreement with those predicted using the multicomponent diffusivities.

Notes: The problem of transient multicomponent diffusion of an arbitrary number of components in one-dimension with heterogeneous reaction has been solved exactly by means of the Laplace transform. Linearized expressions for the diffusion and reaction were used. Numerical evaluations of the solution are given and a comparison made with results derived by use of an effective diffusivity.

Notes: Irreversible, first-order, simultaneous heterogeneous and homogeneous reactions in an isothermal tubular reactor under laminar flow conditions are studied. Accurate values of the eigenvalues, eigenfunctions, and radial concentration profiles are found for the dilute system. Criteria are given as to when the homogeneous reaction may be neglected with respect to the heterogeneous reaction and vice versa. It is found that for a certain range of the rate parameters well-known limiting solutions apply. Outside this range, the new solutions must be used.
