    Description: This paper examines the role of middlemen in the marketing of smoked fish in Doron Baga fish market of Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State. Data were obtained from 200 respondents using stratified random sampling technique, with the aid of structured questionnaire. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistical tools. Secondary sources of information were also gathered from research papers, reports and journals. The study revealed that, there are two types of middlemen in the Doron Baga fish market: selling brokers (Dillali) accounting for 75% and buying brokers (Yan acha) 25%. The role played by the selling brokers includes selling for the fishermen with commission, lending money to fishermen and providing security for the unsold fish. Buying brokers assist those that want to buy fish while the buyer gives them little amount of money as commission. Brokers get more clients when the fish during periods of maximum catch. The problems the middlemen face are failure of the fishermen to pay back the money borrowed from the selling brokers while buyers hardly trust the buying brokers.

    Description: The study examined the opinion of fishermen and fish buyers on middlemen of Doro Baga fish market. 240 respondents were used as samples with the aid of structured questionnaire, using stratified random sampling technique. Descriptive statistics was used to analyze the data obtained. The study revealed that majority of the fishermen (75%) highly depend on these selling brokers to sell their fish for them because their financial support comes from the selling brokers, moreover they do not have a stand in the market. Among the fish buyers, especially those that buy directly for consumption, see the brokers as people that create confusion during transaction. But 55% of the fish buyers believed that brokers keep the business flowing through their support of the fishermen. While the major problem of the fishermen with the selling brokers is getting the loan from the brokers especially when the fisherman is new in the area or business and on the other side, brokers only give the fish buyers grace of two to three days when they don’t have money, after that the broker would sell the fish to another buyer. These problems can be solved when a strong relationship is established between the fishermen, selling brokers, and fish buyers, or when the government intervenes by giving loans to the fishermen.

    Description: A study on contribution of information channels to adoption of aquaculture technologies was carried out in Baga area of Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State. A total of 144 respondents were sampled with questionnaire in 2008 to generate data which was analyzed with descriptive statistical tools. Contact methods constitute the dominant sources of information to fish farmers while mass methods are grossly under utilized. Extension agents and State ADP championed information dissemination to respondents to attain 67.8% adoption. However, information were found to be less effective to meet fish farmers need for high productivity, thus creating doubt on reliability and accuracy of information. By implication, both fish farmers and EAs need training to improve their knowledge on aquaculture technologies. It entails strengthening linkage between fisheries research and extension for active participation in MTRM and FNT for easy access to information and practical knowledge. This should be supported by public-private partnership for promotion and sponsorship of aquaculture technologies in the mass media with other ICTs like tape. YCD, YHS. GSM for effective coverage and service delivery to fish farmers.
