Abstract Basing on calculations of current-voltage characteristics, the shot noise behavior of an asymmetric single-electron tunneling (SET) transistor is calculated within a three-state approximation. In the caseT=0 the problem is solved analytically. It is shown that the three-state approximation is sufficient for the description of the essential part of the Coulomb staircase. Correspondence to the simpler two-state approximation is found. A short estimation of the charge resolution of an electrometer built from the asymmetric SET transistor is given. it turns out to be comparable with the symmetric SET trancistor. The influence of an high-impedance environment is discussed.
