    Beschreibung: We present a high resolution magnetic anomaly map of the Tyrrhenian Sea obtained by processing the data acquired by ISMAR-CNR during two cruises in 1996 and 1999, and in the Aeolian area since 2002. The morphology and geological setting of this Tortonian back-arc basin has been extensively studied and highlighted since 1960, keeping on pace with technological advancements for newer insights. The availability of swath multibeam systems enabled a significant jump in the knowledge of the basin. A full bathymetric coverage was obtained from the upper slope to the bathyal plain along with 60000 km of magnetic, gravimetric and seismic data. We present the results of the processing of the magnetic data. Standard techniques were applied (de-spiking, filtering, IGRF and pole reduction, heading effects and crossover errors analysis), producing an image at the resolution of 1km at the basin scale, and better in shallower areas. Significant insight was obtained for poorly investigated areas, mainly to the North (Montecristo Basin) , other than a better detail on the submarine volcanic structures in the Central and South East portions of the basin. The data were also integrated with new CNR and INGV acquisition in the Panarea-Stromboli area (2002 to 2006). We present also a time-lapse study on the Panarea gas exhalation area, suggesting a clear relationship between the magnetic properties and gas flux variations in time.

    Beschreibung: Magnetic data play a key role in interpretation of deep sources, mostly when they are not easily investigable by other direct methods as in the case of oceanic crust. The most striking problem connected with magnetic data however, is due to their difficult quantitative interpretation that in final analysis derive from the mathematical properties of Laplace equation. Dipolarity increases these difficulties with respect to other potential fields as gravity, so that magnetic data are far from being interpretable “by eye”. The actual methods for reconstruction of crustal sources that reproduce or enhance magnetic observations will be shown, differentiated for 3D or 2D analysis, showing their benefits and/or their disadvantages if applied to marine magnetic data. We will show the results obtained applying a new linear inverse filter on a high-quality data set in the Tyrrhenian Sea, demonstrating the utility of Fourier 2D modelling when there is a large number of data to be interpreted.

    Beschreibung: We describe a magneto-gradiometric survey performed in the «Mar Piccolo» of Taranto, Italy in May 2005 for environmental purposes. This region, which is a noisy harbour environment, provides a challenging test for magnetic methods. To reduce spurious noise signals, with both temporal and spatial origins, we used two Geometrics G880 model caesium magnetometers towed in a transverse gradient configuration. We show how, in shallow waters, this gradiometric configuration allows us to distinguish anomalies due to small metallic bodies near the seabed from the induced noise due to the anthropic contribution and geomagnetic field variations. A direct visual inspection confirmed that the peculiarities highlighted in the gradient anomaly map were due to abandoned metallic objects found on the seabed.

    Beschreibung: A shaded relief magnetic anomaly map of total intensity of the Earth’s magnetic field for Italy and the surrounding seas has been produced at sea level, for the geomagnetic epoch 1979.0 (see Chiappini et al., 2000). Magnetic observations were made on shore within the framework of Progetto Finalizzato Geodinamica of the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (PFG-CNR) between 1977 and 1981. The off shore data were taken during the period 1965-1972 by the Osservatorio Geofisico Sperimentale (OGS). This new compilation gives an unprecedented view of the magnetic anomaly field of the whole area at ground level, which contains many imprints of the major tectonic elements of Italy, and portrays their regional characterization. In 2004 Caratori et al. have undertaken a detailed reprocessing of old aeromagnetic data taken by AGIP at the national scale, with the inclusion of new data. For the first time now the ground level map and the aeromagnetic map show the existence of common features that allow comprehensive correct scientific investigations.

    Beschreibung: In a cooperation project with Eni Spa Exploration & Production Division, actually owner of the aeromagnetic data, we have updated the original Agip map, through the re-processing of the original data set. These data in fact show a very high potentiality, because of the care applied during their acquisition, their remarkable density and the homogeneous and uniform distribution over the covered areas.

    Beschreibung: The accuracy of geomagnetic field measurement at a given point on the Earth's surface is limited by the ambient magnetic noise level which is usually determined by the superposition of signals generated from different sources. The noise that dominates in all physical systems, particularly in spectral regions at lowest frequencies is the flicker noise [Vladimirov and Kleimenova 1962]. The analysis of the background noise that exists on the site is essential to design a new magnetic Observatory. Noise measurements allow then to evaluate the magnetic pollution status of the area and constitute a basic cognitive tool for the building of a new magnetic Observatory. Only by comparing signals of natural origin and the noise is possible to characterize the site. The purpose of this note is the separation of local and regional magnetic noise from signals of external origin. In the near field zone gradients are very high, the contribution of these sources depends much on the source-observer distance.
