Notes: Diagrammatic many-body perturbation theory is used to calculate the potential energy function for the X1 σ+ state of the CO molecule near the equilibrium nuclear configuration. Spectroscopic constants are derived from a number of curves which are obtained from calculations taken through third order in the energy. By forming [2/1] Padé approximants to the constants we obtain: re = 1.125 Å (1.128 Å), Be = 1.943 cm-1 (1.9312 cm-1), aBe = 0.0156 cm-1 (0.0175 cm-1), We = 2247 cm-1 (2170 cm-1), WeXe = 12.16 cm-1 (13.29 cm-1), where the experimental values are given in parenthesis.

Notes: The concept of a universal basis set for electronic structure calculation is illustrated by presenting results obtained when basis sets are transferred from one atom to another. A single Slater-orbital basis set, consisting of nine 1s and six 2p functions, produces Hartree-Fock total energies and orbital energies in good agreement with the most accurate calculations of these energies obtained using different basis sets individually optimized for each atom. Transferability of integrals is a natural consequence of the use of the same basis set for each atom in a molecule.

Notes: Third-order diagrammatic perturbation theory provides a simple and accurate description of the electronic structure of atoms and molecules beyond that afforded by independent electron models. The largest corrections to such treatments, the fourth-order terms, are presented and discussed. All of the diagrams, which arise when the closed-shell Hartree-Fock function is utilized as a reference function, are given through fourth order.

Notes: Many-body perturbation calculations have been performed for the ground state of the carbon monoxide molecule at its equilibrium internuclear separation. The calculations are complete through third order within the algebraic approximation; i.e., the state functions are parameterized by expansion in a finite basis set. All two-, three-, and four-body terms are rigorously determined, and many-body effects are found to be very important. A detailed comparison is made with a previously reported configuration interaction study. Padé approximants to the energy expansion are constructed. The many-body perturbative wave function is used in the Rayleigh quotient to produce upper bounds to the electronic energy.

Notes: We describe in this article our solution to the global minimum problem which uses the simulated annealing algorithm of Kirkpatrick. This method is a Metropolis (e-ΔE/kT) Monte Carlo sampling of conformation space with simultaneous constraint of the search by lowering the temperature T so that the search converges on the global minimum. The Anneal-Conformer program has been extensively tested with peptides and organic molecules using either the Amber or MM2 force fields. A history file of the simulated annealing process allows reconstruction of the random walk in conformation space for subsequent examination. Thus plots of distance and dihedral angle changes during the search for the global minimum can be examined to deduce molecular shape and flexibility. A separate program Conf-Gen reads the history file and extracts all low energy conformations visited during the run.

Notes: The use of computer simulations in all areas of chemistry is growing rapidly because of the powerful insights that they have provided into many interesting phenomena. As investigators continuously examine more sophisticated problems, they need increasingly more powerful tools. Hence, much effort has gone into the development of algorithms which might extend the scope and power of standard dynamic and Monte Carlo techniques. In the Monte Carlo regime, the most common area subject to improvement is the choice of a trial move. In the ordinary case, trial moves are generated uniformly at random. In the extended and hopefully improved case, trial moves are generated randomly but not uniformly. In this article we present a new and totally general method of biased sampling which is applicable to any flexible molecule. In our method, multiple simulated annealing runs are performed to reveal populated and unpopulated regions of the multidimensional conformation space. The second phase of the simulation is done at a fixed temperature with sampling only from populated regions found in the first phase. Because the simulated annealing runs quickly reveal unpopulated regions of the conformation space, the volume of conformation space that needs to be sampled in the second phase of the algorithm is reduced by many orders of magnitude. Additionally, because no energy minimization is used, these populations represent a canonical ensemble which may be used to estimate conformational free energies. © 1995 by John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Polyamines derived from C60 were characterized by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry in 1:1 methanoltoluene containing 2.5% trifluoroacetic acid. Peak assignments are consistent with the formula C60On(RNH2)m for the protonated products. The preferential formation of the hexaaminated product C60O6(RNH2)6 was also observed.

Notes: An efficient algorithm is presented for the self-consistent numerical solution of the single-band effective mass equation. This algorithm has a different form depending on whether the effective mass is modelled as continuous or piecewise continuous. Coupled with a Poisson solver, an established algorithm is applied for the attainment of self-consistency. The rate of convergence to a self-consistent solution is investigated, and the solvers are applied to three different structures to demonstrate its versatility and robustness. The first of these is a nominally undoped quantum well AlGaAs/GaAs heterostructure, the second a doubly δ-doped GaAs homostructure and lastly a quasi-square well modulation-doped field effect transistor. The algorithm is of sufficient efficiency so as to allow the software to run reasonably quickly on a modern microcomputer.

Notes: We report the application of a new conformation searching algorithm called simulated annealing to the location of the global miniumum energy conformation of peptides. Simulated annealing is a Metropolis Monte Carlo approach to conformation of generation in which both the energy and temperature dependence of the Boltzmann distribution guides the search for the global minimum. Both uphill and downhill moves are possible, which allows the molecule to escape from local minima. Applications to the 20 natural amino acid “dipeptide models” as well as to polyalanines up to Ala80 are very successful in finding the lowest energy conformation. A history file of the simulated annealing process allows reconstruction and examination of the random walk around conformation space. A separate program, Conf-Gen, reads the history file and extracts all low-energy conformations visited during the run.
