Notes: The crystal structure at 200 K of the complex formed by the optically active host (R,R)-(-)-trans-4,5-bis(hydroxydiphenylmethyl)-2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxolane (2) and 4-nitro-5-methylpyrazole (1b) and toluene as guests was determined by x-ray analysis. Although only the NH protons corresponding to tautomer 1b were found in the structure, some anomalies in the bond angles involving the nitrogen atoms of the pyrazole ring suggested the presence of about 25% of a structure containing the 3-methyl-4-nitropyrazole tautomer (1a). This hypothesis was confirmed by 13C cross polarization magic angle spinning NMR spectroscopy.

Notes: Poly(β-hydroxybutyrate-co-β-hydroxyvalerate) of microbial origin has been analyzed by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) in a time-of-flight mass spectrometer, after partial methanolysis, using two different instruments, Our results show that the mass spectral intensities recorded in the MALDI mode correlate with previously reported fast-atom bombardment and direct chemical ionization data. MALDI compares favourably with these other two techniques in that it is more suitable to the analysis of complex mixtures and of higher molecular masses.

Notes: The mass spectra of the methyl esters of twenty-one metabolically important N-acylglycines are reported. The spectra are discussed in terms of their fragmentations and their application to studies of metabolic diseases. In particular, the high relative abundance of the peak at m/e 30 in the spectra of many aliphatic acylglycine methyl esters was studied by using ([2,2-2H2]propionyl)glycine and high resolution mass spectrometry. This fragment was assigned to the even-electron ion [CH2 = NH2]+.

Notes: It has been recognized recently that suspension polyvinyl chloride granules consist of particles ca 1μ in diam which are linked together to form a three-dimensional, sponge-like lattice. This paper deals with the fusion process of this particulate structure of PVC resin during powder extrusion. Extrudates prepared under various extrusion conditions are investigated through the electron microscope using a methyl methacrylate (MMA) embedding method followed by ultrathin sectioning. The MMA embedding method has been proven to be an effective means of revealing the detailed structure of molded PVC. Results showed that the 1μ-particles were subjected to breakdown due to heat and shear into fibrils 100-300 Å in thickness, which were the final structure attainable by extrusion. Discussion was focused on the fibrillar structure especially in relation to the elasticity in plasticized PVC.

Notes: In order to elucidate the relations between morphological habits and chemical structure of polymers, poly(ethylene sebacate), poly(hexamethylene sebacate) and poly(decamethylene 1,16-hexadecanedicarboxylate) were crystallized from dilute solutions in n-hexanol, isoamyl acetate etc., and were studied with the electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction. The crystal structure of these polyesters are tentatively determined. Morphological “regularity” and “simplicity” of the single crystals are correlated with the chemical structure of the polymers. The crystallization conditions under which “regular” and “simple” single crystals are obtained are relaxed with increase of methylene sequence length in chemical repeat unit. The Bragg extinction bands in the single crystals of poly(hexamethylene sebacate) and poly(decamethylene 1,16-hexadecanedicarboxylate) suggest nonplanar nature of these crystals. The molecular chains in the poly(ethylene sebacate) single crystals are inclined from the normal of the basal plane; the fold surface corresponds to the (001) plane.

Notes: The electrochemical polymerization of thiophene was carried out both in the presence and absence of ultrasonic waves. Without irradiation, the anode potential increased with increasing current density. Polymerization at high potential gave a low polymer yield and produced macroscopically heterogeneous films. Ultrasonic irradiation resulted in an improvement of polymer yield and in a lowering of the anode potential during polymerization. The effects were especially marked when the polymerizations were carried out at low temperature, low monomer concentration, and high current density. These results are explained by the formation of diffusion layer in the vicinity of the electrode during electrochemical reactions.

Notes: A brief account of a quantum chemistry literature data base (QCLDB) is described, which contains the key information of about 2000 papers of ab initio calculations of atoms and molecules published in 1977-1979. The QCLDB is stored in a computer and can be sorted and rearranged into author and substance indices. Selection of the items for each paper in a computer-readable data base is discussed.
