Beschreibung: 〈p〉Animals must consider competing information before deciding to eat: internal signals indicating the desirability of food and external signals indicating the risk involved in eating within a particular environment. The behaviors driven by the former are manifestations of hunger, and the latter, anxiety. The connection between pathologic anxiety and reduced eating in conditions like typical depression and anorexia is well known. Conversely, anti-anxiety drugs such as benzodiazepines increase appetite. Here, we show that GABAergic neurons in the diagonal band of Broca (DBB〈sup〉GABA〈/sup〉) are responsive to indications of risk and receive monosynaptic inhibitory input from lateral hypothalamus GABAergic neurons (LH〈sup〉GABA〈/sup〉). Activation of this circuit reduces anxiety and causes indiscriminate feeding. We also found that diazepam rapidly reduces DBB〈sup〉GABA〈/sup〉 activity while inducing indiscriminate feeding. Our study reveals that the LH〈sup〉GABA〈/sup〉-〉DBB〈sup〉GABA〈/sup〉 neurocircuit overrides anxiogenic environmental cues to allow feeding and that this pathway may underlie the link between eating and anxiety-related disorders.〈/p〉

Beschreibung: Oriented inclusions of clinopyroxene, orthopyroxene, sodic amphibole and rutile have been identified in garnet from the Lüliangshan garnet peridotite massif in the North Qaidam ultrahigh-pressure metamorphic (UHPM) belt, northern Tibetan Plateau, NW China. Electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) analyses demonstrate that nearly half of the measured intracrystalline clinopyroxene (8 out of 17) have topotactic crystallographic relationships with host garnet, i.e., (100) Cpx //{112} Grt , (010) Cpx //{110} Grt and [001] Cpx //〈111〉 Grt . One fifth of the oriented sodic amphibole (23 out of 110) inclusions of have topotactic crystallographic relationships with host garnet, i.e., (010) Amp //{112} Grt , (100) Amp //{110} Grt and [001] Amp //〈111〉 Grt . Over a third of rutile (36 out of 99) inclusions also show a close crystallographic orientation relationship with host garnet in that one 〈103〉 Rt and one 〈110〉 Rt parallel to two 〈111〉 Grt while the axes of [001] Rt exhibit small girdles centred the axes of 〈111〉 Grt . But, no “well-fit” crystallographic relationship was observed between orthopyroxene inclusions and host garnet. Considering a very long and complex history for the Lüliangshan garnet peridotite, we suggest that the low fit rates for these oriented minerals may result from several possible assumptions including different generations or multi-stage formation mechanisms, heterogeneous nucleation and growth under non-equilibrium conditions, and partial changes of initial crystallographic orientations of some inclusions. However, the residual quantitative “well-fit” crystallographic information is sufficient to indicate that the nucleation and growth of many pyroxene, amphibole and rutile are controlled by the lattice of the host garnet. The revealed close topotactic relationships accompanied by clear shape orientations provide quantitative microstructural evidence demonstrating a most likely exsolution/precipitate origin for at least some of the oriented phases of pyroxene, sodic amphibole and rutile from former majoritic garnet and support an ultra-deep (〉180 km depth) origin of the Lüliangshan garnet massif. Beschreibung: The central route of the South-North Water Transfer Project (CTP) is designed to divert approximately 9.5 billion m 3 of water per year from the Han River, a major tributary of the Yangtze River, to the Hai River Basin in the North China. The main purpose of this study is to assess the impact of CTP on groundwater table in the Hai River basin. Our study features a large-scale distributed hydrological model that couples a physically based groundwater module (GWM), which is subbasin-based, with a conceptual surface water module (SWM), which is grid-based. There are several grids in each subbasin and water exchange among grid are considered. Our model couples SWM and GWM, and calculates human water use at the same time. The simulation results indicate that even with the water supply by CTP, the groundwater table will continue to decline in the Hai River basin. However, the CTP water can evidently reduce the decline rate, helping alleviate groundwater over-exploitation in Hai River region. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Beschreibung: 〈p〉Paired measurements of 〈sup〉14〈/sup〉C/〈sup〉12〈/sup〉C and 〈sup〉230〈/sup〉Th ages from two Hulu Cave stalagmites complete a precise record of atmospheric 〈sup〉14〈/sup〉C covering the full range of the 〈sup〉14〈/sup〉C dating method (~54,000 years). Over the last glacial period, atmospheric 〈sup〉14〈/sup〉C/〈sup〉12〈/sup〉C ranges from values similar to modern values to values 1.70 times higher (42,000 to 39,000 years ago). The latter correspond to 〈sup〉14〈/sup〉C ages 5200 years less than calibrated ages and correlate with the Laschamp geomagnetic excursion followed by Heinrich Stadial 4. Millennial-scale variations are largely attributable to Earth’s magnetic field changes and in part to climate-related changes in the oceanic carbon cycle. A progressive shift to lower 〈sup〉14〈/sup〉C/〈sup〉12〈/sup〉C values between 25,000 and 11,000 years ago is likely related, in part, to progressively increasing ocean ventilation rates.〈/p〉

Beschreibung: 〈p〉Tetrahexahedral particles (~10 to ~500 nanometers) composed of platinum (Pt), palladium, rhodium, nickel, and cobalt, as well as a library of bimetallic compositions, were synthesized on silicon wafers and on catalytic supports by a ligand-free, solid-state reaction that used trace elements [antimony (Sb), bismuth (Bi), lead, or tellurium] to stabilize high-index facets. Both simulation and experiment confirmed that this method stabilized the {210} planes. A study of the PtSb system showed that the tetrahexahedron shape resulted from the evaporative removal of Sb from the initial alloy—a shape-regulating process fundamentally different from solution-phase, ligand-dependent processes. The current density at a fixed potential for the electro-oxidation of formic acid with a commercial Pt/carbon catalyst increased by a factor of 20 after transformation with Bi into tetrahexahedral particles.〈/p〉

Beschreibung: Scores of modeling studies have shown that increasing greenhouse gases in the atmosphere impact the global hydrologic cycle; however, disagreements on regional scales are large, and thus the simulated trends of such impacts, even for regions as large as the tropics, remain uncertain. The present investigation attempts to examine such trends in the observations using satellite data products comprising Global Precipitation Climatology Project precipitation and International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project cloud and radiation. Specifically, evolving trends of the tropical hydrological cycle over the last 20–30 years were identified and analyzed. The results show (1) intensification of tropical precipitation in the rising regions of the Walker and Hadley circulations and weakening over the sinking regions of the associated overturning circulation; (2) poleward shift of the subtropical dry zones (up to 2° decade−1 in June-July-August (JJA) in the Northern Hemisphere and 0.3–0.7° decade−1 in June-July-August and September-October-November in the Southern Hemisphere) consistent with an overall broadening of the Hadley circulation; and (3) significant poleward migration (0.9–1.7° decade−1) of cloud boundaries of Hadley cell and plausible narrowing of the high cloudiness in the Intertropical Convergence Zone region in some seasons. These results support findings of some of the previous studies that showed strengthening of the tropical hydrological cycle and expansion of the Hadley cell that are potentially related to the recent global warming trends.

Beschreibung: Using ionic liquid (IL) [C 2 MIM][PF 6 ] as an additive could remarkably improve the performance of the acetonitrile (CAN) process, which is the most widely used distillation process to produce 1,3-butadiene (1,3-BT). In this work, a rigorous simulation of a new IL process to produce 1,3-BT was carried out to evaluate the performance of IL additive on an industrial scale, using UNIFAC as the global thermodynamic model. Based on the simulation models, some key operation parameters, such as solvent ratio and reflux ratio, were determined by sensitivity analysis. Furthermore, a multi-objective optimization was proposed and performed considering both the energy consumption and environmental impact (green degree) of the new process. A nonlinear mathematical model was established to express this multi-objective optimization problem, which includes six decision variables and involves maximizing the green degree of the process, the purity and the recovery of 1,3-BT, and minimizing the energy consumption of the process. The optimization results showed that the energy consumption of the IL-containing process could be reduced by 22 % and that its green degree could be improved by 9.2 %. A multi-objective optimization model for an IL-containing process which involves six decision variables and four objectives, including environmental impact (green degree), was proposed and solved by a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm (non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm).

Beschreibung: Rotating drums are widely used in pharmaceutical industry to coat tablets. The motion of the tablet particle is one of the most important factors affecting coating uniformity. The purpose of the research is to experimentally investigate two important time variables for the coating process, residence time and turnover time, and their dependence on operating parameters (rotation speed and filling degree of the drum). The average residence time was found to decrease with increasing rotation speed and filling degree. The average turnover time was observed to increase approximately linearly with the inverse of the drum speed, but was found to be independent of the filling degree. A dimensionless time variable, the fractional residence time, i.e., the residence time divided by the turnover time, was introduced. Analysis showed that the fractional residence time could be a good indicator of coating uniformity. Results of the present work provide useful information for theoretical modeling which may ultimately serve as a tool for coating optimization. Rotating drums are widely used in pharmaceutical industry to coat tablets. The time features of the particle motion in the drum exert great influence on the coating performance. In the present work, effects of drum operating parameters on particle residence time and turnover time were investigated in a quasi-2D rotating drum using the image-processing technique.
