    Notes: Abstract Novel abrasion resistant coating materials prepared by the sol-gel method have been developed and applied on the polymeric substrates bisphenol-A polycarbonate and diallyl diglycol carbonate resin (CR-39). These coatings are inorganic/organic hybrid network materials synthesized from 3-isocyanatopropyltriethoxysilane functionalized organics and metal alkoxide. The organic components are 3,3′-iminobispropylamine (IMPA), resorcinol (RSOL), diethylenetriamine (DETA), poly(ethyleneimine) (PEI), glycerol and a series of diols. The metal alkoxides are tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and tetramethoxysilane (TMOS). These materials are spin coated onto bisphenol-A polycarbonate and CR-39 sheets and thermally cured to obtain a transparent coating of a few microns in thickness. Following the curing, the abrasion resistance is measured and compared with an uncoated control. It was found that the abrasion resistance of inorganic/organic hybrid coatings in the neat form or containing metal alkoxide can be very effective to improve the abrasion resistance of polymeric substrates. The adhesion tests show that the adhesion between coating and substrate can be greatly improved by treating the polymeric substrate surface with a primer solution of isopropanol containing 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (3-APS). The interaction between 3-APS and the polycarbonate surface was investigated by a molecular dynamics simulation. The results strongly suggest that the hydrogen bonding between the amino group of the 3-APS and ester group in the polycarbonate backbone are sufficiently strong to influence the orientation of the primer molecules. The abrasion resistance of these new coating systems is discussed in light of the structure of the organic components. All of these results show that these coating materials have excellent abrasion resistance and have potential applications as coating materials for lenses and other polymeric products.

    Notes: Abstract This paper presents an integrated real-time control system for a Robotic Filament Winding manufacturing cell. The architecture is based on a multiprocessor system employing four processor boards. The system incorporates a hierarchical control layout with the task specification at the highest level and the robot and winder set point tracking at the lowest. Eventual design goals include a PC front-end unit capable of winding path generation and testing prior to actual part production. Preliminary experimental results on cylindrical, elbow and T-shaped pipe-fittings are included.

    Notes: Abstract The synthesis of inorganic organic hybrid materials has been undertaken and used as abrasion resistant coatings for polymeric substrates by the sol-gel method. The organic components are diethylenetriamine (DETA), glycerol, and a series of aliphatic diols which are functionalized by 3-isocyanatopropyltriethoxysilane. The inorganic components are tetramethoxysilane (TMOS), aluminum tri-see-butoxide, titaniumsec-butoxide and zirconiumn-propoxide. Solutions of these materials are spin coated onto bisphenol-A polycarbonate sheet and thermally cured to obtain a transparent coating of a few microns in thickness. Following the curing, the abrasion resistance is measured and compared with a control having no coating. It was found that the abrasion resistance of inorganic organic hybrid coatings in the neat form or containing additional silicon, titanium, zirconium, and aluminum alkoxides can be very effective to improve abrasion resistance. The adhesion tests show that the adhesion between coating and substrate can be greatly improved by treating the polymeric substrate surface with an oxygen plasma or a primer solution of isopropanol containing 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane. Other experiments, such as the abrasion resistance tests following conditioning in a “hot-wet” condition (boiling water treatment), microhardness tests. UV absorption behavior, and the observation of abraded surfaces, were also undertaken in order to evaluate these coating materials.

    Notes: Abstract Poly(dimethylsiloxane) elastomers were filled with two zeolites which were both silicates of sodium and aluminum, but which had different cavity sizes. The reinforcement of the particles provided was characterized by stress-strain measurements in elongation at room temperature. The results indicated that the ultimate properties of the networks were increased by both types of zeolites, but that the increase was larger in the case of the zeolite with the larger cavity size. Small-angle-neutron-scattering results confirmed that the interface between the elastomeric phase and the zeolite particles was smooth, but gave no evidence for increased polymer penetration into the larger-cavity zeolite. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed that the zeolite with a larger pore size also had a smaller particle size, and this is probably the origin of its superior reinforcing ability.

    Notes: Abstract In this paper, we develop a new method to approximate the solution to the Hamilton–Jacobi–Bellman (HJB) equation which arises in optimal control when the plant is modeled by nonlinear dynamics. The approximation is comprised of two steps. First, successive approximation is used to reduce the HJB equation to a sequence of linear partial differential equations. These equations are then approximated via the Galerkin spectral method. The resulting algorithm has several important advantages over previously reported methods. Namely, the resulting control is in feedback form and its associated region of attraction is well defined. In addition, all computations are performed off-line and the control can be made arbitrarily close to optimal. Accordingly, this paper presents a new tool for designing nonlinear control systems that adhere to a prescribed integral performance criterion.

    Notes: Abstract The problems of a crack inside, outside, penetrating or lying along the interface of an anisotropic elliptical inclusion are considered in this paper. Because the crack may be represented by a distribution of dislocation, integrating the analytical solutions of dislocation problems along the crack and applying the technique of numerical solution on the singular integral equation, we can obtain the general solutions to the problems of interactions between cracks and anisotropic elliptical inclusions. Since there are no analytical solutions existing for the general cases of interactions between cracks and inclusions, the comparison is made with the numerical results obtained by other methods or with the analytical results for the special cases which can be reduced from the present problems. These results show that our solutions are correct and universal

    Notes: Abstract To determine the difference in induction of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) mRNA expression in cultured vascular cells of different species, the expression of iNOS genes and their regulatory mechanisms in rat, human, bovine, and rabbit vascular endothelial cells and smooth muscle cells (SMC) were studied by Northern blotting, chloramphenicol acetyltransferase (CAT) assay, and electrophoretic mobility shift assay (EMSA). Qualitative estimation of iNOS mRNA by Northern-blot analysis demonstrated that the combination of interleukin-1β (IL-1β), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and lipopolysaccharides (LPS) drastically induces iNOS expression in rat and human SMC, and a more moderate effect was observed for endothelial cells; the effect of IL-1β alone was much weaker than that of the three factors. IL-1β alone or a mixture of IL-1β, TNF-α, and LPS both showed negligible effect on iNOS expression in bovine and rabbit vascular endothelial cells and SMC. Results of CAT assay corresponded well with Northern analysis indicating 7-fold increase in CAT activity by the mixture of IL-1β, TNF-α, and LPS in SMC and more moderate, 2-fold increase, in endothelial cells. IL-1β alone produced an intermediate effect (less than 2-fold) on vascular SMC of rats and humans. The results of EMSA showed that two shifted bands appeared when the nuclear protein from rat and human vascular endothelial cells bound to the region from –1037 to –787 of the rat iNOS gene, while vascular SMC nuclear protein only produced a single shifted band under the same conditions. These results suggest that cell- and species-specific mechanisms exist in the induction of iNOS expression.

Behandlungen mit 3% igen Wasserextrakten aus Früchten und Blättern in einer Rate von 40 ml/qm ergaben 93 und 100% Mortalität der Erstlarven, während 3%ige Wasserextrakte nur aus Blättern zu einer 93%igen Mortalität der Drittlarven führten. Fraßhemm- und/oder Magengift-Wirkungen spielten dabei eine wichtige Rolle. Methanolextrakte hatten die gleiche Wirkung wie Wasserextrakte im Gegensatz zu Petrolätherextrakten. deren Wirkung auf die Heuschrecken deutlich abfiel.
    Notes: Abstract Water extracts, methanolic extracts and the petrol ether phase from the fruit and leaves ofMedia azedarach L. were tested against different instar nymphs ofLocusta migratoria migratorioides (R. & F.) under laboratory conditions. Water extracts caused various degrees of mortality and a significant delay in the development and growth of the locusts. Treatments with 3% concn of water extracts from the fruit and leaves at a rate of 40ml/m2 gave 93% and 100% mortalities, respectively, of first instars, and a 3% concn of leaf extract resulted in a mortality of 93.2% of third instars. Antifeedant and/or stomach-poison effect(s) played an important role. MeOH extract had the same efficacy as water extracts, but the petrol ether phase did not show much effect on the locusts.
