Notizen: Abstract This paper describes an experimental study of a quasi-optical cavity to be used in qyrotrons. The cavity configuration was designed so that its output wave could pass into a quasi-optical transmission line. The test cavity was coaxially composed of a pair of annular mirrors, one of which was a curved conical mirror and the other was a plane mirror having a radial slot array for wave output. A mode excited in the cavity at 56.4 GHz was observed by detecting the radiation wave that leaked out through the slotted mirror. It was shown that the present slotted mirror served as a partially and uniformly transparent mirror to radiate the output wave with the same mode as in the cavity.

Notizen: Abstract An analysis is carried out with a profile of hollow Gaussian radiation beam propagating in an optical system composed of coaxial annular curved mirrors. The result will be a useful tool in designing an axisymmetric quasi-optical gyrotron oscillator (ASQUOTRON).

Notizen: Abstract The design of a 170 GHz, 1 MW-CW gyrotron for electron cyclotron heating of nuclear fusion plasmas is presented. The designed gyrotron incorporates a coaxial cavity to reduce mode competition, and a coaxial electron gun to support the cavity inner conductor. A new mode converter splits the generated wave into two beams and radiates them in different directions. The radiated beams are transmitted to two output windows through two mirror systems, being transformed into Gaussian-like beams. A single-stage depressed collector improves the overall efficiency of the gyrotron and reduces the heat flux to the collector surface.

Notizen: Abstract The influence of chromium on the bismuth-system superconductors (Bi-SC) was found as a by-product in a crystal synthesis experiment using a high-temperature-pressure-vessel (HTPV). The main product in the HTPV was found to be a 2 2 0 1 phase of the Bi-SC, while the product in air from the same raw materials was a 2 2 1 2 phase. This difference is attributed to an impurity from the HTPV. It was found from other experiments that chromium stabilizes the 2 2 0 1 phase of the Bi-SC and chromium decreases the 2 2 1 2 phase.

Notizen: Abstract The effect of casting and homogenizing treatment conditions on the formation of several Al–Fe–Si intermetallic compounds in 6063 aluminum alloy was investigated using X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The four kinds of alloys containing 0.1 to 0.5 mass% Fe were melted and then cooled at three different cooling rates ranging from 0.06 to 50 K/s, following the homogenization at 858 K for 54 ks and 2400 ks. The Al–Fe–Si compound particles were extracted from the alloy ingots using the thermal phenol method. The as-cast 0.1 mass% Fe ingot obtained at the casting cooling rate of 0.06 K/s had a largest amount of the β phase among the ingots investigated. When this ingot was homogenized at 858 K for 54 ks and 2400 ks, the amount of the β phase decreased, while that of the α′ phase increased. On the other hand, the as-cast 0.5 mass% Fe ingot obtained at the casting cooling rate of 50 K/s had the largest amount of the α phase among the ingots investigated. When this ingot was homogenized at 858 K for 54 ks, a large amount of the α phase remained. However, the homogenization at 858 K for 2400 ks resulted in the transformation of the α phase to the α′ phase. The main phase in the as-cast 0.2 mass% Fe ingot obtained at the casting cooling rate of 5 K/s, close to the industrial cooling rates, was the β phase. The β phase gradually decreased, and the relative amounts of the α and α′ phases increased during homogenization at 858 K for 54 ks. Furthermore, almost all of the Al–Fe–Si intermetallic compounds were transformed into the α′ phase in the ingots homogenized at 858 K for 2400 ks.

Notizen: Abstract The superconducting critical fieldsH c and the critical temperaturesT c have been measured down to 0.05 K in a series of dilute alloys ofMo Co,Mo Fe, andMo Mn. These systems haveT K /T c0 of 50, 0.3, and 15, respectively, whereT K is the Kondo temperature of the alloy andT c0 is the critical temperature of pure Mo. The critical fields atT=0 and the specific heat jump atT c have been estimated from the observedH c and compared with the theories of the magnetic impurity effect in superconductors. The behavior of these quantities and the density of states are found to depend strongly uponT K /T c0 in agreement with theory. From the results it is inferred that in the limit of largeT K the superconducting properties of a Kondo alloy would tend to those of the Abrikosov-Gor'kov theory.

Notizen: Two-stage nuclear demagnetization has been performed using PrCu6 and Cu as coolants. The Cu nuclear stage reached temperatures as low as 10 ΜK with a rate of temperature rise of less than a few ΜK/h. The corresponding conduction electron temperature is estimated to be less than 50 ΜK. A nuclear orientation thermometer of Al 54Mn has been successfully used to measure temperatures down to 10 ΜK.

Notizen: Abstract The magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistivity of Ce impurities in single crystals of Y-Ce alloys were measured at temperatures down to 1.5 K in the directions parallel and perpendicular to thec axis of the crystal. The experimental results were interpreted in terms of the Kondo effect and the crystal-field effect. The data show that the crystal field of Y splits the2 F 5/2 ground state of the Ce 3+ ion into three doublets, the lowest doublet specified byj z =±1/2. The susceptibility, resistivity, and specific heat results at low temperatures show evidence for the existence of a bound state due to the anisotropic Kondo interaction. Analysis of the low-temperature resistivity data yields a Kondo temperature of 40 K, which is independent of the current direction and the Ce concentration. The susceptibility and the resistivity at 0 K are nearly isotropic.

Notizen: Abstract This paper discusses a study on the mechanism of self-organization. A global order is organized by the simple and locally coordinated actions of autonomous agents using only local information, so complex or globally coordinated actions which use global communication and high-level strategies are not necessary. The fundamental factors for establishing a global order using self-organization are a “dissipative structure,” an “autocatalysis mechanism,” and “intentional fluctuations.” If an environment where there are agents has a dissipative structure and those agents have some sort of autocatalysis and intentional fluctuation mechanisms within themselves, it is possible to form a global order for them using only their simple and locally coordinated actions. “The blind-hunger dilemma” is used as an example to simulate the self-organization and coordinated actions of agents. In this simulation environment, there are many ant-like agents which must get energy. However, there is only one small energy supply base, so either an efficient method or the coordinated actions of agents is needed. As a result, the agents using our approach could move and get energy more efficiently than agents using conventional coordination mechanisms involving global communication and high-level strategies.
