Notizen: Abstract The results from a ballon-borne gas Cherenkov counter (threshold 16.5 GeV nuc−1) and an ionization spectrometer are presented. The gas Cherenkov counter provides an absolute energy calibration for the response of the calorimeter for 5⩽Z⩽26 nuclei of cosmic rays. The contribution of scintillation to the gas Cherenkov pulse height has been obtained by independently selecting particles below the gas Cherenkov threshold using the ionization spectrometer. Energy spectra were derived by minimizing the χ2 between a Monte Carlo simulated data and flight data. Best fit power laws (dN/dE=AE −γ) were determined for C, N, O, Ne, Mg, and Si. The power laws, all consistent withE −2.7, are not good fits to the data. A better fit is obtained using the spectrum derived from the spectrometer. The data from the ionization calorimeter (Simonet al., 1979) and the gas Cherenkov are thus completely self-consistent.

Notizen: Summary The title compound is converted into the cyclic ethers5 and the alcohol6 upon treatment with ceric ammonium nitrate in acetone. Using methanol as a solvent the dimethoxy derivative9 and the nitrate ester10 are formed. No cross cycloaddition is observed in the presence of olefins such as ethyl vinyl ether,DMAD, or indene; however, with cyclopentadiene as co-reagent a mixture of the exo-endo Diels-Alder adducts14 involving the vinylic system of 1 as 2π component is obtained. The results are rationalized through the interrnediacy of the radical cation1 ·+, generated by single electron transfer (SET) from the neutral precursor1 to Ce(IV).

Notizen: Abstract —In addition to the near normal-incidence observations within the German DEKORP 2 project in 1984, wide-angle observations have been carried out on a parallel profile across the boundary between the Saxothuringian and Moldanubian crust, approximately 50 km NE of the main transect to control three-dimensional variations. Explosion sources have been used for the entire survey, providing excellent conditions for wide-angle registrations. A velocity model has been derived on the basis of in- and off-line refraction measurements using a kinematic raytracer which was extended to three dimensions by interpolation of 2-D velocity fields between parallel sections. Although prestack-migration of the data led to aliasing effects due to large shot and geophone spacing, stable results were obtained by forming envelopes after single-shot migration. The migrated sections reveal a strongly reflective Moho at about 31 km depth and a steeply (50°) dipping intracrustal reflector, which seems to be related to the border between the two Variscan units.

Notizen: Abstract In LiNbO3:Fe,Me crystals (Me = K, Mg, Zn) elementary holograms are recorded and erased with frequency-doubled, ordinarily polarized pulses of a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser. At high light intensities (I 〉 109 Wm−2) holographic sensitivities and saturation values of refractive index changes grow with increasing intensity and a contribution to photo-conductivity appears increasing quadratically withI. The intensity-dependent parts of the holographic quantities are diminished by increasing the lithium content of the samples or by doping the crystals with magnesium or zinc. Experimental results can be described by a two-center charge transport model, which is the Fe2+/3+ model supplemented by shallow traps, namely niobium ions occupying lithium sites.

Notizen: Abstract It will be shown, how the spatial decay of active molecules — excited electronically or activated otherwise (e.g., chemical processes) is determined by diffusion and flow as well as by the intrinsic molecular constant. The exact analysis in cylindric geometry leads to a set of unique solutions, which in lowest order are characterized by a weak gradient of the particle concentration at the wall and a pronounced kernel in the center of the tube. In special cases there exists a simple but powerfull expansion of any distribution in the source, which are very similar to Fourier-Bessel series. The solutions in lowest order will be used to analyze the measured decay of activated oxygen in a steady stream of molecular oxygen. Since the decay constant is determined by volume deactivation and by the removal of particles at the wall, evaluation of experimental data, however, remains necessarily ambiguous.

Notizen: Summary Cellobiose oxidase from Phanerochaete chrysosporium was used for continuous monitoring of cellulase action on microcrystalline cellulose (Avicel). Two protocols are described, the parameter monitored being either the decline in electrode potential as ferricyanide is reduced or consumption of dioxygen. Most experiments used a commercial cellulase preparation from Trichoderma reesei and ferricyanide as acceptor. Within 1 min of an addition of cellulase, ferricyanide reduction reached a steady rate. This was converted into a rate of production of substrate for celobiose oxidase, in μmol·min−1. Experiments were conducted either with a constant concentration of cellulase and increasing Avicel, or with constant Avicel and increasing cellulase. Kinetic analysis of the experiments with constant cellulase indicated a K mof 4.8 ± 1.0 (g cellulose)·1−1, which was close to the value predicted from binding studies. The specific activity of the cellulase was measured as 375±25 μmol·(g cellulase)−1·min−1 in experiments with a high cellulose concentration, but was less than half this value when the cellulose was saturated with cellulase. The maximal rate of cellulose degradation was 9.6±1.3 μmol·(g cellulose)−1·min−1.

Notizen: Abstract The Trinity peridotite was emplaced over metabasalts and metasedimentary rocks of the central metamorphic belt along the Devonian Trinity thrust zone. Three metamorphic events can be recognized in the Trinity peridotite: (1) antigorite (δD= −63 to −65%.) formation related to regional underthrusting of the central metamorphic belt; (2) contact metamorphism associated with Mesozoic dioritic plutons; and (3) late-stage formation of lizardite ± brucite and chrysotile (δD= −127 to −175%.) due to infiltration of meteoric waters. Abundant relict phases indicate incomplete reactions and strongly suggest that the availability of H2O was a controlling factor during serpentinization. Antigorite (event 1) formed as a result of infiltration into the Trinity peridotite of mixed H2O-CO2 fluids derived from the underlying central metamorphic belt. Foliation defined by magnetite veins and shear zones within antigorite serpentinites are subparallel to the Trinity thrust. The assemblage Fo + Atg + Chl + Mag ± Tr ± Carb reflects partial hydration of peridotite at 425–570° C. Talc-rich serpentinite formed along the thrust as a result of the infiltration of silica-bearing fluids. Metasomatic mass-balance calculations based on silica solubilities and the extent of antigorite serpentinization suggest that 80–175 volumes of fluid have passed through a given volume of original peridotite at the Trinity thrust. The Trinity thrust probably represents a Devonian subduction zone. Thermodynamic calculations suggest that hydration reactions account for ∼30–35% of the total heat released by the cooling Trinity peridotite. By analogy, similar hydration reactions are to be expected in the overlying mantle wedge of a subduction zone which act to retard cooling of the hanging wall, just as dehydration reactions delay heating of the downgoing slab. Metasomatic zones formed in peridotite at the Trinity thrust may reflect similar metasomatic processes to those proposed to occur in the mantle wedge above a subducting slab.
