    Notes: Abstract. An alternating copolymer composed of 9,9′-dihexylfluorene and N-2-ethylhexyl carbazole was synthesized to use as an emissive polymer in a light-emitting diode (LED). The copolymer is soluble in organic solvents and spin-cast to make a fine film. An LED fabricated by sandwiching the alternating copolymer between indium-tin oxide and aluminum emits a white color with the full width at half maximum of 150 nm. The electroluminescence spectrum becomes simplified to have an emission peak at 460 nm for fine blue color when the copolymer is blended with poly(vinylcarbazole) with a ratio of 1 to 4 before the use as an emissive layer. The forward bias turn-on voltage for the LED is 13, and quantum efficiency is 0.002%.

    Notes: Summary We have synthesized a polyacetylene derivative, poly(dipropargyl-16-crown-5), through the cyclopolymerization of the corresponding monomer by metathesis catalysts. The polymer containing crown-ether units was characterized by spectroscopic and thermal techniques. The polymer structure is believed to be a cyclized from with both five- and sixmembered rings. The polymer exhibits high cation-binding properties and ionochromic effects. The order of the selectivity of alkali- metal cations for both the monomer and the polymer was found to be Na+〉K+〉Li+ and the polymer shows the largest red shift by approximately 40 nm in λmax for Na+.

    Notes: Abstract Performance of the process reducing the slab width in hot plate mill called edging is critical to produce rolled products with a desired dimension, which otherwise increase the yield loss caused by trimming. This process, therefore, requires a stringent width control performance. In this paper, an edger set-up model generating the desired slab width required for the control is proposed based upon the neural network approach. This neural network model accounts for variation of the dimension of incoming slabs to predict the preset value of the width as accurately as possible. A series of simulations were conducted to evaluate the performance of the neural network estimator for a variety of operating conditions needed for producing rolled products of various dimensions. The results show that the proposed model can estimate the preset value of the slab width with good accuracy, thereby enhancing the dimensional accuracy of rolled products. The estimation performance is discussed in detail for various process operation conditions.

    Notes: Abstract Data are presented on InGaAsP/InP planar buried heterostructure (PBH) distributed feedback (DFB) lasers operating at 1.3 μm. A four-step MOVPE process and holographic lithography are employed to fabricate these lasers. The CW laser threshold and the slope efficiency from these lasers are 9 mA and 0.23 mW mA-1 per facet at room temperature. Single-longitudinal-mode operation with side-mode suppression of more than 35 dB is obtained at 5 mW.

    Notes: Abstract A distributed feedback (DFB) laser module has been developed for 2.5 Gbs-1 optical transmission systems. The DFB laser has a multiple-quantum-well (MQW) active layer and a planar buried heterostructure (PBH) for a low threshold current and stable singlemode operation with low chirping. A PBH DFB laser module with a single-mode fibre pigtail and an optical isolator was designed and fabricated by employing a single lens and a laser welding method. The fabricated MQW PBH DFB laser module is shown to be a suitable light source for 2.5 Gb s-1 optical transmission systems with a minimum received power of-33 dBm after 47 km conventional optical fibre transmission.

    Notes: Abstract We report the effects of external optical feedback on the power penalty of commercial distributed feedback laser diode (DFB-LD) modules for 2.5Gbs−1 optical transmission systems. External optical feedback presented to the DFB-LD modules causes the excitation of external cavity modes, resulting in increased relative intensity noise (RIN) and intensity noise ripples at low frequency region below 500MHz. For a 10−10 bit error rate (BER), the minimum power penalty is as much as 1.25dB for a feedback ratio of −8.8dB. An excess power penalty of 0.5dB per 3dB increase in the feedback ratio was also empirically obtained. We suggest that optical isolators in 2.5Gbs−1 DFB-LD modules used in conventional optical transmission systems or WDM systems must have a peak isolation ratio of better than 54.5dB, instead of the previously recommended 30dB, for negligible power penalty induced by external optical feedback.

    Notes: Abstract For successful assembly of flexible parts, informations about their deformation as well as possible misalignments between the holes and their mating parts are essential, since the corrective assembly motion to compensate for such misalignments has to be determined from the measured informations. However, the relationship between them is very complex, and thus cannot be simply derived from analytical methods. This paper presents a neural net-based inference system that can infer the complex relationship between the corrective motion and the measured information of parts deformation and misalignments. The lateral misalignment and the inclination angle of a part are given as the inputs, and the lateral corrective motion is given as the output for the neural network. By using the proposed method, a series of experiments to compensate for the lateral misalignment are performed. Experimental results show that the proposed neural net-based assembly algorithm is effective in compensating for the lateral misalignment from the point of view of a fast search toward the hole center, and that it can be extended to the assembly tasks under more general conditions.

    Notes: Abstract This paper presents a new method for selecting the force-reflection gain in a position-force type bilateral teleoperation system. The force-reflection gain greatly affects the task performance of a teleoperation system; too small gain results in poor task performance while too large gain results in system instability. The maximum boundary of the gain guaranteeing the stability greatly depends upon characteristics of the elements in the system such as: a master arm which is combined with the human operator's hand and the environments with which the slave arm contacts. In normal practice, it is, therefore, very difficult to determine such maximum boundary of the gain. To overcome this difficulty, this paper proposes a force-reflection gain selecting algorithm based on artificial neural network and fuzzy logic. The method estimates characteristics of the master arm and the environments by using neural networks and, then, determines the force-reflection gain from the estimated characteristics by using fuzzy logic. In order to show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, a series of experiments are conducted under various conditions of teleoperation using a laboratory-made telerobot system.

    Notes: Abstract In order to avoid wheel slippage or mechanical damage during the mobile robot navigation, it is necessary tosmoothly change driving velocity or direction of the mobile robot. This means that dynamic constraints of the mobile robotshould be considered in the design of path tracking algorithm. In the study, a path tracking problem is formulated asfollowing a virtual target vehicle which is assumed to move exactly along the path with specified velocity. The drivingvelocity control law is designed basing on bang-bang control considering the acceleration bounds of driving wheels. Thesteering control law is designed by combining the bang-bang control with an intermediate path called the landing curve whichguides the robot to smoothly land on the virtual target's tangential line. The curvature and convergence analyses providesufficient stability conditions for the proposed path tracking controller. A series of path tracking simulations and experimentsconducted for a two-wheel driven mobile robot show the validity of the proposed algorithm.
